Lady and the Tramp

Hi,

I'm looking for any laserdisc collectors out there.

We have the widescreen version of Lady and the Tramp from its Platinum Edition DVD, but need the Academy Ratio version from a laserdisc. (since the DVD's 4:3 was just stupid cropped)

Does anyone here know which laserdiscs have that ratio, and where I can buy them? Or does anyone happen to own one that they could let me borrow? (I'm just going to record it to DVD and then send it back if you wish)

This is one of those rare things I'm trying to find.

It's the 1998 CLV laserdisc (UPC: 786936080902, Reference: 14673 AS). mvealf did a screen comparison of the widescreen-vs-academy-vs-pan&scan laserdiscs a few years ago in this thread

You can probably find it on e-bay.

That version is not on eBay, I looked there first.

The only one on eBay is this:
http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/41072/582 ... amp-(1955)
There's no aspect ratio given... is it either widescreen or pan-and-scan then?

And what's the title card say where the original one says "Filmed in CinemaScope"? If that other thread shows it, then my bad... I can't view images from school.

That one is an older one, and most probably PoS. Why they even bothered to make it P&S when they already had the 1955 Academy ratio version seems pretty stupid, though.

If the one you're looking for isn't on eBay now it could still turn up eventually. But it seems quite a bit more rare than the WS disc released at the same time (1998 or so). I bought the WS disc when it came out but didn't find the Academy version that interesting right then, even though I understood that it wasn't the P&S version. Buying one laserdisc of a title at a time was expensive enough as it was...

i think the reason is so they wont have to restore it twice..and when restoring ...both copies might not look the same..even tho they have color references in the disney vault.

Well...

I...think we have a winner.

(ETA: To clarify, the OP is the one who bought me the laserdisc I just screencapped from.)

Just to elaborate a little bit...

I got lucky and found someone selling the Academy version laserdisc on eBay. I bought it and had it sent to MK since he's got a laserdisc player and I don't.

Here are mvealf's original screenshots to compare to the ones he posted:

So judging by those, I'm quite certain the one I found is the ultra-rare Academy version. 8)

Once MK and I have several different captures from the laserdisc, we'll be doing some noise averaging and try to make the best digital master as possible. Hopefully more screenshots to come.

Wow, great find! :D Any chance we can get more screens? The Ratio comparison was one of the most fascinating features on the Bug's Life DVD.

I hold a lot of personal attachment to this film and would love to be able to see the academy version.

Yeah, once we get a good quality recording, we'll make a DVD that'll be free for anyone to download. :D

I've got 5 caps of the back so far, and working on my third of the front.

I gotta figure out a good way to do this averaging stuff... I don't think dropping a bunch of jpegs and running ImageMagick on them's gonna work!

Intresting I will recheck my VHS, based on that screen shots, as im still unsure if it was academy ratio or pan and scan trash.

My VHS of Lady And The Tramp is most definitely the Academy Ratio version as I remember seeing Darling's finger on the mirror.

I'd LOVE this on DVD! I have the LD but my LD player is OOA. Please, please make it available for download!

Cheers,

Matt

That's our goal xD

I'm trying the one method of averaging I know, but I don't know how well it'll work. If not, well, drf and I know a few Avisynth gurus, we'll figure something out.

I'm not sure this did me much good, but here's averaged images of the two shots we used for testing. (I've averaged side 1.)

If this technique doesn't work I'm up for trying some avisynth-fu, although I don't even have it installed right now. (I used ImageMagick on the shots, one frame at a time, with a batch procedure controlled by BASH.)

Which VHS is this? I have the Masterpiece one that was released at the same time as the laserdisc and I'm 99% certain it's pan and scan.
