It's been well recorded that Walt considered doing Baum's stories for a time, possibly as a Mickey vehicle, but could never get anything together. Do you think it may be something worth trying today? Or do you think MGM's version is simply too ingrained in people's concienceness for anyone to try.

The 1939 masterpiece is always going to be intergrated in anyone's mind. Disney should do a new Oz story or turn the Mickey Mouse Club idea and make it into a full length animated film.

I've always wanted Disney to make their own animated adaptation of the story. I think animation as a medium would set this apart from the MGM musical, and therefore the general public would be more tolerant of this than they were of Return to Oz. Unfortunately, an animated Oz by Disney isn't likely to happen for quite some time. Warner Brothers is working on their own live-action version of the novel, and I doubt Disney will want to tackle the same material so close to this new high-profile version, even with a different medium.

I think the 1939 feature has become so iconic, that even if the film was successful, it could never be called a classic.

Although I never understood the 1939 film, I don't quite see the point in tackling a storyline that's already been adapted "perfectly"...
I think that's why to don't see anyone trying to do The Little Mermaid, since Disney already "mastered" it.

Personally I'd rather see Disney do an animated version of the musical "Wicked" instead.

While I seriously love Wicked, I would be furious if Disney made it into a movie.
I really don't think they would stay true to the original. It's too..dark.

If anyone were to do anything with "Wicked", it should be the book. How I loathe that musical. Anyhow, Disney wouldn't do a movie of a pre-existing musical.

Well, I meant I never understood the critical acclaim, but not having seen the movie in full (it always got so boring!) I never understood the point either XD

The Wizard of Oz, along with Rapunzel, is something that I've always Disney to make into an animated feature since I was a child. Obviously, Rapunzel is coming soon, so that only really leaves The Wizard of Oz. And to be honest, it does seem like something not at the top of Disney's to-do list at the moment, mainly because of the 1939 classic and the potential new Warner Brothers adaptation. Disney could always adapt one of the later Oz books...wait, actually no. Aside from the first two or three sequels, they're pretty much childish plop in my opinion.
