I didn't realize it until recently, but on my copy of the Little Mermaid Limited Issue DVD, the screen isn't perfectly centered. The black bar on the top is obviousley larger than the bottom. Is anyone elses copy like this, or is mine defective?

And no, it is not a bootlegg. I bought it at a real store and the disc artwork is printed just like the other Limited Issues.

Can't give you an answer as to wether other copies of the DVD are like this, but I highly doubt it's just a problem with your disc.

First off, I've never heard of a single DVD having a problem like this.

However, there are cases where many DVDs of a cartain title have this problem. For example, The Lost World: Jurassic Park DVDs have the exact same presentation as you are reporting (although perhaps not quite as noticable).

So I don't think it's a defective disc.

Normally little things wouldn't bother me, but I think something like that would just get on my nerves. Mind you, it would probably take me a good while to notice it, but then I'd never NOT notice it ... if that makes any sense.

I think that your Little Mermaid DVD Limited Issue has a defect on it.
You should upgrade to The Little Mermaid Platium Edition if the defect bothers you that much.

Of course there's the slight problem of there being no Platinum Mermaid DVD out at the moment, which makes it a bit harder for him to upgrade...

GoofyStitch, contact Disney and tell them about the problem. They have an 800 number, (800) 723-4763 and they can help you and will replace the disc if it is indeed defective.

I was just coming in here to post this...excellent advice.

You can register your Disney DVDs and part of the benefit of doing so is that discs can be replaced for a nominal fee, which I thinks is $10. Definitely give this a try.

I register all my DVDs with Disney and have used the replacement program before with my Lady & The Tramp. well worth it. They are very willing to get you a new copy of the DVD as long its a defect on their part.

That's right! They replaced my Mickey Mouse in Living Color tin for free, so give it a try!

Just a little warning:

The majority of the disney movies are in the WIDESCREEN format, but some movies, like hercules, little mermaid and lion king 2 were been released in the LETTERBOX format, so, this may be not be a problem, but a caracteristic of the letterbox format.

did you have anonter of the movies i told now? try to put them, if the problem dissaper, is your copy with problem, if not, the "problem" persists, is a caracteristic of the letterboxed format.

This is most likley the result of of the your tv's overscan, it cuts away more of the bottom bar than the top one.

As you can see there is just a slight difference between the top and the bottom bar on this screenshot from my r1 Limited issue of The Little Mermaid.

PS if there's someone that's willing to host the picture in a place where It can be seen in the thread that would be much better.

Thanks for the help. I guess it is a problem with the letterbox, seeing as it's not anamorphic widescreen. Someone once told me that the computer dosen't overscan. I remembered this and tried playing the DVD on the computer and the bars look the same size, so I guess it must just be the overscan. It just seems weird that this is the only DVD I own that looks this way when played.

how do you register your dvds with disney?? I would like to do this! Is it just disney.com?

I don't think the overscan might be doing this since the little mermaid is not anamorphic WS so the overscan doesnt affect alot of the movie since it's letterboxed but i've seen that problem happened when this DVD is played on a APEX dvd player.

The overscan dosn't affect the actual picture as much as if it was an anamorphic release, then the picture would be cropped on all four sides. This time it's only cropped on the sides, the black bars get cropped. I checked my Little mermaid limited issue on my tv the bars look just the way goofystitch explained in his first post. If you run the film with a projector or a computer there will be no overscan
