Im debating on a 40 inch 1080P HDTV which one is better sony or samsung?

Which model Sony and Samsung are you looking at? Both are "top tier" brands so it might come down to which TV has the most features and connections, or even the price.

Bought ourselves a Samsung plasma back in March of 2006 and absolutely LOVE it. Consumer reports is a great resource to check, and I believe they rate the HDTVs in an issue out this month.

They both share the same fabrication plants for their LCD panels, so it probably doesn't matter.

Sony and Samsung, the world's top maker of both LCD panels and LCD TVs, will each pay for half the investment. The companies will build a new factory for their South Korean LCD panel joint venture, S-LCD Corp., the news agency reported without citing anyone.
