I had a hard day today and thought I'd lighten up the evening with a bit of Disney music (what's not to love, right?). Anyway, I found myself on YouTube watching a bunch of musical sequences from made for television musicals that Disney has done for the old Wonderful World of Disney series. I must say, they had some fun stuff. It totally brightened up my mood. Are they going to make any more "television events"? I saw "A Raisin in the Sun" which I liked, but I was thinking more Disney TV musicals.....they could film a live action Tarzan musical (since the stage show kind of went by the wayside). Or even come up with an original musical again (like "Gepetto"). Anyway, I thought I'd feel out the forum and look for some more love for these underrated TV programs. I REALLY hope so!

I've only seen Cinderella, but I loved it!

Unfortunately, I've only seen three of those. Cinderella, Muppets Wizard Of Oz and Gepetto. I have all three on tape and when ever I feel like being cheered up I slip them in and sing along. I beg that they bring these back because they were just great. Thank you, disneyfella, I figured everyone had forgotten about these wonderful movies.

At least you're honest. Did you see them all? I must admit on initial viewing I didn't care for Gepetto, South Pacific, or The Music Man. For some reason though, they've all furrowed their way into my good graces. I kind of like them now.

The only one I've seen so far is the new version of The Music Man with Kristin Chenoweth and I liked that one, not just because of Cheno, but I thought it was nicely done. But I haven't seen the old version, so I'm not the right person to judge.

I kinda wish they would do more, but I'm afraid of 2 things. 1, they would be inferior remakes of older musicals, or 2, they will be pop music musicals like HSM. Good remakes and original (but using an older musical style) musicals would be good.

I'm still waiting for those Music Magic Editions for Cinderella and Annie.

Wasn't ABC supposed to be working on a new version of the Peter Pan musical? Someone on here posted a couple of articles about that last year, I think. It was going to have the songs from the Mary Martin version, but done less stagey and more cinematically ala P.J. Hogan's 2003 film. I guess the writer's strike threw this project into limbo.

Nope - saw three of those and they were just plain bad.

That would be cool. Did they have any actors or actresses in mind for the characters?

I saw all but South Pacific (which was not labeled WWOD anyway) and love every one of them. I don't have the Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella and my parents have the Annie DVD but I'm really hoping for an SE. Going thorough each one this is what I think...

Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella: I was astounded at 5-6 years old and continued to rent the tape and watch it when it re-aired on some weekend afternoon on an ABC or UPN affiliate. Most everyone in there is so wonderful and perfect for there role, despite there ethic background (but seriously Black Queen + White King = Asian Prince? ). I've never seen the Lesley Ann Warren or Julie Andrews versions but this was a fantastic (TV) movie musical.

Annie: I've always had trouble thinking of what I thought of this one. I like it but after the '82 version I'm not too sure. It’s more true to the show and has Kathy Bates, Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth but the trio of Carol Burnett, Tim Curry and Bernadette Peters in the 82 film is wonderful as well. Also, I find Victor Garber to be a superb Daddy Warbucks. I guess there both great on there own but without the villains casting in the WWOD version I'm not sure what I'd think.

Geppetto: Now this is a bit different. The songs are very catchy; Drew Carey can carry a tune many of the cameo/bit parts are well done but Julia Louis-Dreyfus's accent! Dear me! It got tolerable after some time but she makes ol' Dick Van Dyke look British! The one song I don't like very much is Pleasure Island but other than that great ol' show. I'd really like to find the CD for it. I think that of the bunch either this or Cinderella are my favorite.

The Music Man: Good fun. I've seen better versions of it (the WB film) and worse (some onstage versions) but it works I think. I only think that the kid who played Winthrop was awful (and I don't just say that because I played in 2000) also Victor Garber was not a good Mayor.

Once Upon a Mattress: ALOT was cut but the casting and sets made up for MOST of it. I was very excited to see this when it came on. Carol Burnett was wonderful in her newfound role as Queen Aggravain and was genius in her new song that was written for her and the TV production (which I'd love to find an MP3 of). Tracy Ullman was hilarious as Princess Fred as was Tommy Smothers as King Sextimus. The cast were old for there roles but it seemed to be part of the joke in this version. I really enjoyed it.

The Muppets Wizard of Oz: The non-singing parts I really liked its just that most of the music with the exception of 'When I'm With You' was not good for musicals, Muppet movies or in general. I think that 'The Witch is in the House' may have been good if cut down.


So... Yes. I most definitely miss them.

I thought the "Annie" remake was done rather well, but I still prefer the original classic with Carol Burnett as Miss Hannigan.

That's my major complaint with this adaption of R&H Cinderella. It's not that it is the rainbow casting it's the illogical way of doing it. I also didn't like the "pop singer" versions of all the songs (I'll stick with the Julie Andrews recording I got off itunes) but it's always good to hear Bernadette Peters sing.

The only disney musical i saw was R&H remake of Cinderella. Even though it was different from the oringal musical, i found myself enjoy watching it. It's one of the dvd's i am on a hunt for to add to my dvd collection.

I've only seen Cinderella, Once Upon a Mattress, Annie & The Music Man,(The last two I have, Annie on VHS and The Music Man on DVD,) but I do miss them. I know they aren't the greatest movie musicals in the world, but they were fun and I still really enjoy them. One of the Disney movie musicals I haven't seen and have wanted to see for a long time is Gepetto. I wish Disney would do more.
