ok so i've decided to jump in the bandwagon of upgrading to HD. Im looking into getting a HDTV 1080P and a PS3 but i need help im reading about the PS3 and it says certain model are backward compatible with PS2 games is this true? anyone have a PS3 and recommends certain model? how about HD TVs? any good models or types? now that HD DVD is long (sorry netty!) gone! I can upgrade!

The 20GB PS3 (NTSC) is backwards compatible with PS1 games and PS2 games through hardware.
The 40GB PS3 is only backwards compatible with PS1 games.
The 60GB PS3 (Discontinued) (NTSC) is backwards compatible with PS1 games and PS2 games through hardware.
The 60GB PS3 (Discontinued) (PAL) and 80GB PS3 (NTSC) are backwards compatible with both PS1 and PS2 games through software emulation.

I'd personally recommend the 60GB but since that is discontinued I'd go with the 80GB.

As far as I know, the only one not compatible with PS2 games (or SACD playback for that matter) is the 40GB model.

Are you sure about that with the 20 and 40GB models? I could have sworn they removed PS2 compatibility in everything lower than the 60GB models?

EDIT: Yeah, if you read the reviews on Amazon, they say there is no PS2 compatibility in the 40GB model. There is also no indication, from what I can tell, in Sony's own specs that the 40GB model is compatible with PS2 games. If that is something you really need you are better off going with the 60GB model.

Note that the software compatability for PS2 games (rather than hardware) is about 2/3rds of titles. Many more than that do "play" - only a small fraction won't play, but you get unpredictable results.

My biggest disappointment is James' legs repeatedly appear and disappear on Silent Hill 2 on my PS3.

what did you do with all your HD DVDs and you XBOX 360 and HD DVD drive? sorry netty but i told you so! hehe Thanks for the heads up mate!!

I've kept them. I still play the 360 more than my PS3 and I have lots of HD DVDs which aren't/won't be out on Blu-ray for a long time. In fact, I bought a stand alone HD DVD player just at the start of this month, and I don't regret it (much). my HD DVD discs still play, and most still look spectacular.

lol oh netty hehe in a couple of month people be asking you what an HD DVD is well im glad you're not pissed off or anything. I would be if i invested in it. im glad blu ray won tho!

Does anyone know if the PS3 60GB is still available?

If you want the best backwards compatibility try to find the discontinued 20 or 60GB models. They are 90 some % compatible, and only a few titles don't work. The 20GB does not have wireless if thats important. All the other PS3 models have wireless. Both have been discontinued for awhile, so they might be hard to find.

The 40GB will not play any PS2 titles, so if backwards compatibility is a must you will have to get the 80GB. It has software emulation, because the PS2 chip that was in the 20 and 60GB models was removed. You will get about 75% backwards compatibility with the 80GB. Most of the big titles work fine. Sony has a database on their site of what games work and what doesn't on the PS3. However all PS3s will play PS1 games.

The current 80GB bundle includes Motorstorm, however there are plans for a new 80GB bundle soon. It will include the new Metal Gear game and the new Dual Shock 3 controller. It will still be $499 like the current bundle.

None of the PS3s come with the right cables for a HDTV. You will need to pickup a HDMI cable for the PS3, and if your going to use it for a lot of Blu-rays you might want to pickup the PS3 Blu-ray remote. You can order a HDMI cable online from Monoprice, etc... You will get the same quality for a lot less than buying a cable from Best Buy, etc...

Personally if you don't care about playing any PS2 games, or have a PS2 and don't mind still keeping it hooked up get the 40GB model. You can upgrade the hard drives on all PS3s later on if you need more space.

What size HDTV are you looking to buy? and what price range?

If you want to upgrade to HD, I would recommend you to get the LG Super Blu "BH200" player, I've got it and I'm amazed, it can play Blurays and HD-DVDs without any difficulties and I can watch all the bonus features available in each format.

It pains me to say this, but with HD DVD dead the combo players really are not worth it unless you already have some HD DVDs. Although it could be worth it if you wanted to pick up some HD DVDs with the "fire sale" prices that are going on now.

Personally if I was waiting to upgrade to HD I would wait on the newer Profile 1.1 and 2.0 players coming out. If you also want gaming then the PS3, but for Blu-ray only I would wait on the new stand alone players to come out.

well i read the PS3 is more future friendly because if you have the wifi capability it updates bluray profiles as they come out from sony as well as other player and gaming enhancements as standalone players dont.

Right now the PS3 is really the only future proof player, but there want be any need after the 2.0 players come out (unless another Profile comes out). I'm not sure if the 2.0 players will have wifi, but they do have wired connections which you can hook to a router (in a bridge mode), etc... and make them wireless.

I think Profile 1.1 is going to be mandantory on all Blu-ray players, and 2.0 will be optional at this time. However over time I think 2.0 will become standard. 2.0 adds the ethernet port, and small storage so you can connect online and view extra content.

I think the PS3 will fall behind when it comes to some things eventually. It doesn't have analog audio outputs if thats important to you. However if you plan to use the PS3 as a gaming device too, its really your best bet for Blu-ray.

There is one benefit to the PS3. Sony has been really good about doing firmware updates for it. So far its the fastest loading Blu-ray player too. I really hope the standalone players get better with load times cause the PS3 really shines on this compared to the current players.

As far as HDTVs go I'd recommend the new 120Hz models or nothing... if they're too expensive for you at the moment, just wait 'til they come down. The lesser models weren't worth bothering with even before 120Hz hit the market.
