Now that the format war is over, does anybody have any ideas on what Disney’s future with Blu-Ray is on the following?:

Since Sleeping Beauty will be on Blu-ray this fall, will Pinocchio and the rest of the Platinum line also be on Blu-ray?

When will the other animated classics be introduced to Blu-ray? Also if Blu-ray holds more information why do they need two discs still on many releases? Like the Caballeros Collection, could that fit on one Blu-ray disc someday? Doesn’t that seem like it would make it cheaper to produce and for consumers?

The Walt Disney Treasures, will those be put on Blu-ray? Could you fit each tin onto one disc?

What about the live-action movies? Some of my favorites like Johnny Tremain and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, are they going to be put on Blu-ray and when? I don’t own them and I don’t want to buy it on dvd and then have it be released on Blu-ray a year later.

So any one got any thoughts on the subject? Or are all of you just waiting like I am for news of further announcements?

Most likely, yes. Unless for some reason the Blu-ray doesn't sell, we will most likely be seeing all Platinums released on both formats, I would think.

They use two discs because of the high def resolution movie on the first disc. If they were to import a two-disc movie as it was on the DVD straight to Blu-ray yes, it could fit on one Blu-ray disc. Sometimes, but rarely, the special features are hi-def as well, thus necessitating the second disc.

Plus, they can charge more for something fairly cheap to make.

Indications are all future Platinum releases will be on DVD and Blu-ray.

The picture for HD has six times the information as a SD picture. So while a Blu-ray disc has five times the storage, it has to squeeze on more than six times the data. Advanced compression codecs mean that a HD picture doesn't need six times the space as it does on a DVD but it still requires more than a SD encode on a standard DVD.

However, most Blu-ray releases also have uncompressed audio, which is many, many times more information than a normal DVD Dolby or DTS soundtrack. They may also have additional soundtracks in an advanced audio format (such as DTS HD or Dolby Digital True HD) which are compressed, but again many times larger than a typical DVD soundtrack.

But overall the length of a Blu-ray's capacity is about the same as a DVD, if you want to use it's advanced soundtrack options and maintain a quality picture while presenting everything in HD.

Disney likes to cycle the availability of its animated classics - although they have been more lax with some of the lesser classics on DVD. I don't see Disney releasing all their Animated Classics at once. I expect them to be released on Blu-ray gradually over the next 5 years or so.

The Caballeros Collection could fit on one DVD, so it could also fit on one Blu-ray.

If the contents were remastered in HD, probably not. Some Treasure sets have over 5 and a half hours of content.

Disney don't seem to want to sell old live-action movies on DVD. I don't see them changing their mind over Blu-ray releases. Perhaps 20,000 Leagues will have a quickish Blu-ray release - the restoration for the Vault Disney DVD was probably done at 2K (so HD). I can't see Johnny Tremain being released on Blu-ray for years from now sadly.

Wow thanks for the info. Now I understand the technical aspects better. It is shame that Disney is not that interested about the older-live action films yet. Guess I will just have to buy them on dvd for now.
