Warner Brothers has just announce, among other titles, the Blu-ray releases of both "Gone With the Wind" and "The Wizard of Oz" for 2009. No doubt to tie in with these film's 70th anniversary.

This is interesting. I was just thinking about buying "The Wizard of Oz" in its 3-Disc form and I was wondering when it would make it on Blu-ray. My only concern is will all of the bonus features be ported over. That is the main reason, besides the film of course, to buy the set in the first place. Hopefully WB will treat Wizard and "Gone with the Wind" in a truly wonderful Blu-ray multi-disc set. Wizard should at least be 2-discs. We'll just have to wait and see.

Considering how close to utter perfection the 3-Disc Collector's Edition of Oz was, I won't mind at all if the Blu-Ray version is exactly the same features-wise. I always said The Wizard of Oz would be one of the few non-Disney movies I'd double dip for on Blu-Ray. People who have seen the 2005 Ultra-Resolution restoration projected digitally on the big screen say the DVD doesn't do it justice and that it'd have to take a high-definition format to really reveal how much went into this restoration. I can't wait to fully see the results for myself next year.

I guess my resonse is "Frankly me dear, I don't give a damn" and "wonderful".

Its possible one of the cartoons may not make it to Blu-ray as these were left of international DVD releases due to copyright issues (and Warner has stated it will continue to release all Blu-ray's region free, which my cause the conflict)

But considering Forbidden Planet on HD DVD had the movie in HD, the not-really-a-sequel sequel "The Invisble Boy" in SD, and about three additional hours of other SD content on a disc with only 60-odd percent of the capacity of a Blu-ray disc (and with the SD content encoded in MPEG2 rather than in one of the more efficient compression codec to save space), I don't think you have anything to worry about - and Warners have been consistantly good about not dropping DVD extras from their HiDef releases (the only movie I can think of where they have done this is Superman: The Movie).

According to Amazon's page on the blu-ray for The Wizard of Oz, it is indeed for the 70th anniversary (duh) and it's going to be a numbered, limited edition, while supplies last sort of release! I absolutely cannot wait.

Oh my those look wonderful. However, I really don't want to buy a big box set just the Blu-ray... Hm, whatever shall I do?

That's really annoying. I intend to buy a Blu-Ray player, but what about those people who just can't afford one by the time it goes OOP? I'm hoping it will be out for a while.

I started buying my blu-ray discs well before I bought my first PS3 or stand-alone blu-ray player. If you know you're going to upgrade, pick it up before it sells out and you'll get to use it eventually.

Because of price when it came out, I never got around to getting the 3-disc Wizard of Oz (I have the original DVD gift set in the big green box though, it's one of my very favorite films), and just by chance I have yet to get Gone with the Wind at all. I will be really psyched to get these on blu-ray if they don't lose extras from their most deluxe editions.

I do have a question for foks familiar with the 3-disc Oz though. Does it include ALL the extras from previous releases? For example, those animated inbetween sequences and the Angela Lansbury documentary?

Nah, you're better off with the 3-disc edition. The big green box is the previous DVD release and comes with a book (I don't recall if the book is just a script or a making of book, because it's been that long since I've looked at it), and some lobby cards I think. There are some neat extras on the DVD, but it's just a single-discer. Nothing to buy now. The big green box looks pretty cool though, but it's just a box, ha.

Well, that's a good idea if it fits, ha. I will probably do that myself with whatever next edition I get, ha.

Ugh, that still frustrates me! I like seeing interviews like that. Well, hopefully the Blu-Ray set will have everything the 3-disc does. I will likely keep my old standard DVD though, since it has that neat box with the book and stuff instide.

I have a feeling for Oz it'll just be a redump of the newest restoration.

As I was watching the special features, the guy said they scanned each frame at 4000 horizontal pixels. (Which is like twice the 1920 Blu-Ray uses)... so if they restored it at that resolution, they'll probably just make it 1080 instead of 480.

Son of a biscuit! I really REALLY love interviews with the cast on movies & TV shows on DVD, but I also really love the bonus features on the 3 Disc set. Once again, it looks like I will have to buy multiple editions of the same movie.

I've seen that edition on the shelves at my library all the time (Evidently people only want the 2-disc set now)...

If all you want off it are those interviews I can rip that and send them to you... I mean, if you own the movie it isn't too unreasonable to be sharing extras, now, is it? (I only own Wizard of Oz on VHS, but the movie is the movie... who cares what format it's in?)
