New Releases, A Good Year?

In my opinion 2008 is going to be a good year because we're getting a good batch of animated movies from Disney. The following DVD's should be released this year.

-The Aristocats
-101 Dalmatians Platinum Edition
-Saludos Amigos & The Three Caballeros
-The Jungle Book 2
-The Little Mermaid 3: Ariel's Beginning
-Tinkerbell (also Blu-ray Disc)
-Sleeping Beauty Platinum Edition (also Blu-ray Disc)

I'm not sure if we'll see The Little Mermaid 2 or 101 Dalmations 2: Patch's London Adventure. Hopefully they will be released this year as well.

I'd also like to mention that Enchanted will be coming to DVD and Blu-ray disc as well!

I'm looking forward to Sleeping Beauty the most. :)

What is your opinion on this years line up of releases ?

The only things I'm looking forward to are:

The Aristocats: Special Edition
101 Dalmatians: Platinum Edition
Enchanted
Minutemen
National Treasure: Book of Secrets
Classic Caballeros Collection
Sleeping Beauty: Platinum Edition
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
WALL-E
Walt Disney Treasures

Regarding the live-action titles, Enchanted is at the top as I really loved the movie. I may get Book of Secrets, though I may just wait and get it used some months later. I'm hoping that the Prince Caspian DVD is as well-done as the The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe two-disc, and that it also get a 4-disc set the following April. But given how disappointing At World's End's DVD was compared to Dead Man's Chest, I think the same will happen with Prince Caspian.

Minutemen wasn't too bad of a DCOM (wasn't too great either), but the scifi fan in me liked it enough that when it eventually gets released on DVD (every new DCOMs have received a DVD release since late 2005).

Of the Animated Classics being released this year, the only one I'm really excited for is 101 Dalmatians. I'll likely get Sleeping Beauty on DVD and in Blu-Ray as well, as the incentive for me to get a Blu-Ray player.

I don't regularly collect the Treasures (I still have yet to get Donald V2 and V3, along with a slew of others), but I hope I'll be able to resume collecting for it again.

I think 2008 will be an okay year, not the greatest for Disney DVD (that belongs to 2001 and 2004), but not the worst either (a tie between 1999 and 2007).

Why were 2001 and 2004 the best years?

I'm wondering about something. Over the last few years, Disney has released 2 Platinum Editions and 2 Special Editions per year. We know what the two platinums are, and the first special edition is Aristocats. Anybody happen to know if they will release a 2nd special edition this year and if so, what will it be? :?:

I don't think it's the Saludos Amigos/Three Caballeros set as it's being released in April. Usually the 2nd special edition comes out in the fall around the same time the 2nd platinum comes out.

2001 saw excellent single-disc and two-disc releases for most of their animated films and a few live-action titles. Also, it was the start of the Platinum Edition, the Walt Disney Treasures, and saw the end of the mis-managed Gold Collection (though GC-type discs would still be released in the next couple years, as they were likely scheduled to before the name was dropped). Plus, 2001 is the year that 102 Dalmatians came to DVD. :D

2004 was probably THE year for catalog live-action titles as Disney seemed to release several every few months and capped the year off on a high note with Mary Poppins: 40th Anniversary Edition. Of course, not all were OAR, and most were barebones. But the fact that they were released at all, and some with excellent bonuses, says something. While the animated titles weren't as bountiful as before (only Alice in Wonderland, Aladdin, Mulan, Brother Bear), they were very solid two-disc sets with excellent restoration and supplements. Also, 2004 saw two waves of Treasures, due to the increased print run of Wave Three (delayed from December 2003 to May 2004).

I have a feeling it will either be the DVD release of WALL-E (as Monsters, Inc. and The Incredibles served as the SE-supports for the PE's of Beauty and the Beast and Bambi), or possibly a new edition of The Sword in the Stone (to complement the likewise-medieval Sleeping Beauty), even if the OOP time is only several months (January 31 to October). The Emperor's New Groove remained in print right up until the Not-So-Special-Edition came out in 2005 as the SE-support for Cinderella, and its old edition could still be found for a few months after the new one was released.

SleepingBeautyAurora PM'ed me with:
what were the special editions last year ???

robin hood and ??
(sorry I can't PM back  )

Robin Hood was in 2006, along with Dumbo.

Last year's DVD releases were:

Platinum 1: Peter Pan
Platinum 2: The Jungle Book
Theatrical Release: Meet the Robinsons
Pixar Theatrical Release: Ratatouille
1st Special Edition: The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (Friendship Edition)
2nd Special Edition: Return to Neverland (Pixie Powered Edition)

I guess this year we won't get a theatrical DVD release because Bolt comes out to theaters in November, so we will get that one in Spring 2009.

Escapay could be right. The 2nd could be The Sword in the Stone. I'm looking forward to see the 101 Dalmations insert to see what the Spring 2009 Platinum Edition will be. I hope it will finally be Pinocchio.

Looks to be a good year for DVD releases for me, since I missed out on Sleeping Beauty and The Three Caballeros. I will also probably pick up the Blu-Ray versions of Sleeping Beauty and Enchanted.

Though this isn't directly related to the subject, I recently asked at the Disney Store about forthcoming DACs on DVD, and 'Pinocchio' is currently scheduled as the early 2009 release. So 2009 may be even better than 2008 for me. I must say that, as far as Disney's concerned, I'm really only interested in the Animated Classics. So that's 'The Aristocats', 'Sleeping Beauty', 'Saludos Amigos', 'The Three Caballeros' and of course '101 Dalmatians'. Oh, and 'Ratatouille' (I'm in the U.K.).

I told you Pinocchio will be released in 2009 and not Snow White! so acorrding to this:
101 Damlations-March (or actually next month).
Sleeping Beauty-October 2008.
Pinocchio-March 2009.
Fantasia-October 2009.
And now,i wonder what movie will be released with Alice In Wonderland in 2010.
And 2010 will have Snow White.
Do you think that the Sword In The Stone might get a Platinum Edition? it is a poplure film,i think even more then Jungle Book.

Not good enough. We need Wonderful World of Color episodes in season box sets.

Also - they need to get a handle on aspect ratios and over-enhanced color and detail and other strange mastering issues.

Jungle Book was a travesty with the over-cropped image. Peter Pan and Cinderella were a complete miss from a color perspective.

I voted "Maybe."

The new direct-to-DVD films don't excite me at all. The re-releases of DACs will probably be no worse than previous editions, but I have yet to see proof that they will be better. Wall*E is an unknown quantity, but after Ratatouille and Cars, I'm guessing that only Blu-Ray has a possibility of getting a decent edition, and DVD will get the shaft again.

2008 will be a good year. Not the best, but decent enough.

I'm most excited about 101 Dalmatians, Sleeping Beauty, and Enchanted, though I'm sure I'll pick up other Disney DVDs.

I voted "Yes". I'm not too interested in the new "The Aristocats", "Sleeping Beauty", "Saludos Amigos"/"The Three Caballeros", and "The Jungle Book 2" DVDs, since I doubt I will upgrade. I am HUGELY anticipating "101 Dalmatians", though, and I'm excited for "Enchanted", "The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning", and "Tinker Bell". If "Destino" finally comes out, I'll be really excited for that, since I've waited for so many years to see the whole thing (I've done 2 school reports/projects about it in the past few years). As for in the theaters, I'm so excited for "Bolt" & "WALL-E".

I own a bunch of DCOMs, but not them all- eventually I'd like to buy more, and when I do, I'll get "Minutemen"- I really liked it (but I really like all the DCOMs). I do want to see "College Road Trip"- it looks really good. I'll eventually see "Prince Caspian", if not in the theater, then I'm sure our friends will buy it, since I watched the first "Narnia" film at their house.

If "The Sword in the Stone" does get the Special Edition treatment, it probably will not have much that's special on it. I wonder if Disney will ever release 2-disc non-Platinum Editions again... :(

I'm all for this, if they would actually add special stuff. I think that the Gold Collection of TBC is the best Gold Collection disc (I'm not just being biased), but a nice documentary would be nice. I doubt we'll see that anytime soon.

I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE Disney to release "The Sweatbox", but, that too, is not very probable.
