Buzz and Woody are about to go 3-D.

The Walt Disney Studios plans to debut digital 3-D versions of Disney-Pixar's "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2."

"Toy Story" is slated to open October 2, 2009, followed by "Toy Story 2" on February 12, 2010. Both films would be released in advance of Disney-Pixar's "Toy Story 3," which is being produced as a 3-D motion picture and is slated to open June 18, 2010. Veteran Pixar filmmaker Lee Unkrich (co-director of "Toy Story 2") is directing the third installment.

John Lasseter -- director of the first two "Toy Story" films and chief creative officer for Disney and Pixar Animation Studios -- will oversee the creative side of the 3-D conversions for "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2."

In converting "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2" to state-of-the-art 3-D films, the technical team is retrieving all of the original digital elements and rebuilding them in 3-D.

Originally released by Walt Disney Pictures in 1995, "Toy Story" was the first feature-length computer-animated film. The film received Oscar nominations for original score, original song and screenplay, and earned Lasseter a special achievement award. "Toy Story 2" was released in 1999 and received an Academy Award nomination for original song.

I only saw the first one in theatres (tagged along with my brother and his Cub Scout group) and the second we got on VHS (and of course later on DVD). It'll be great to see them all again on the big screen, especially when Buzz says "no sign of intelligent life..." and Woody pops out and goes "HELLOOOOO!"

That is exciting news! Opposite of Escapay, I only saw the second film in the theaters, so it would be cool to see the original in the theater. I can't wait to see what they come up with for the third story.

Complete side note for lighthousemike: Will you be getting an advanced copy of "The Aristocats"?

Anyway, I'm thrilled about this! Now we know why Nick Knack was converted for TNBC3D in 2006. I dont even know if I saw Toy Story in a theatre but I did see Toy Story 2 (on a Thursday which somehow I can recall ) and I'd love to see them in 3D! One thing though... will the animation itself be upgraded ala Lion King?

i sure hope so, i called my friend and alerted him i need the Cats asap - i LOVE that mive and can't wait to have it on DVD.
The lss we talk about the original DVD of that movie the better, i did buy back when it came out, watched the first minute and threw it away. horried. so i can not wait for the new one.

About Toy Story - i can't wait, i saw both in theatres, both on opening day and loved them. Though i'mnot a fan of 3-D i will go anyway to see it on the big screen again.

BTW, Tom Hanks talke don a recent UK talk show about the 3rd movie and said the story looks amazing and he thinks this will top the other two.

i did see both 3D and DVD, but i meant that i hope it isn't especifically made for 3D;
movies that get animated especially for 3D ala Sharkboy and Lavagirl look like garbage on TV.
i know it will never look as crappy at all, given S&L is complete garbage, but i know there will be
at least some scenes where the 3D is important and once on DVD won't make sense

Well, if they re-release Toy Story in Disney Digital 3D, it'll be badass! I would like to say, what will happen if they re-release Animated Disney classics from 1937-1942, 1950-1967, 1970-1981, 1985-1999 directly to Disney Digital 3D?

Although, I wish Toy Story 3 would just be like it's two preceders..

But anyway, it's great to know they are bringing the Toy Stories to the big screen again.

Please Escapay, the REAL eye popping scene is when Buzz and Woody fly at you at high speed with a rocket on Buzz's back.

Toon Zone reports that all three of Pixar’s Toy Story movies will be getting the 3D treatment with the first one being released to theaters in October 2009, the second one in in February 2010, and the third one, presumably receiving a simultaneous traditional and 3D release on June 18, 2010.

So it would appears that Toy Story 3 will also be released to theaters without being in 3D.and also in 3D where available..... not like Nightmare Before Christmas and the Hannah Montana Concert movie being exclusively for Digital 3D capeable theaters....

I don't think anybody said it whould be 3D exclusive. I think everyone has assumed it was going to be like Chicken Little, and Meet The Robinsons before it.

*sigh* this will eliminate me from seeing the film. My theater chain (a monopoly) I am pretty sure is NOT upgraded for 3D enhanced films (well, they didn't qualify for a 3D theater for MTR anyway).

they might upgrade by then; where i live we didn't get digital 3D until early this year so we only missed Chicken Little and the first3D re-release
of The Nightmare Before Christmas; its only been since late 2005 since films are released like that

Yay! They just added a 3D-capable screen in my local theater!
I missed the last few, but can't wait to take advantage of this.

No new scenes for Toy Story 3D re-releases

Collider reports that the re-releases of Toy Story films in 3D will not feature any new shots and nothing will be changed in the films when they return to cinemas next year. Jim Morris, producer of Wall-e, adds, “We’re not changing a thing in the movies. We’re doing it that completely preserves the original movie in terms of everything about the story. There’s no new shots. There’s no new nothing. It’s exactly the same movie you saw before.” The article also suggests that Pixar plans to release the first movie on October 2nd, 2009 and the second on February 12, 2010 to get people ready for the third Toy Story film which opens in theaters June 18th, 2010.

I wonder if they will release the 3D versions anywhere?

And I'm hoping they use polarized lenses like the IMAX theaters do... I HATE the half-red/half-blue kind... as the entire movie will only have two colors. (Any sort of green will just blend in and not be in 3D)

And either way I hope they release Toy Story 3 in both the 3D and two-dimensional like they've done with movie such as Spy Kids 3(D) (And Yes I know it's not Disney...), Shrek 3D, etc. So that you can watch them without having 3D glasses.

Poor Don Hahn he must have worked so hard to convince them to add in pointless new scenes and mess with the movie we know and love. I am def going to see these mostly because of the fact TS and TS2 rule and cause TS was the first movie i saw in theaters. I might even try to take my new God daughter.

of course they will. no one uses the red and blue anymore. it will be shown the same way as meet the robinsons.

Toy Story 3 will be shown in both standard and 3d. (the other 2 however will only be in 3d) and it will be in 3d anywhere where they have a digital projector.

I plan to see Toy Story 3 first in 2d, then again in 3d. reason being I found the 3d slightly distracting in meet the robinsons, but I love the effect a lot, so Im sure I'll enjoy it in 3d as much if not more. and I think I might try to break my record of seeing one movie in theatres 6 times. you'd probably be shocked to hear that movie was Star Wars: episode II. haha

I was going to do that with Episode III, but I just didnt have it in me.

Well my theater has about a year to upgrade or else someone will be VERY unhappy.
