I am having a weird problem on disc 4 of Monk Season 1, If anyone has this and could verify, that would be great!

I am on the special features, and I can hear the music, but it kind of fades in and out, and I can't hear the dialog, through my TV speaker. This happens on all of the Special Features.

However, when I turn the stereo on, I can hear everything, but it didn't sound like the dialogue was predominantly on one channel or the other.

The episodes played fine through the TV speaker.


Here is my set-up:

Apex DVD player ->
stereo A/V cables ->
input switchbox ->
stereo A/V cables - >
Stereo VCR ->
Coax Antenna Cable ->
Old mono TV with no A/V inputs

The VCR also has stereo audio cables going to my home stereo. I don't have DTS or any kind of Surround decoder, just L/R stereo.

My roommate has that season on DVD - I'll check it out right now.

EDIT (update) :

I'm on the "Mr. Monk and His Origins" featurette, and I hear a faint bit of music... but nobody speaking. I see the people speaking. But nothing's coming out of their mouths.

Same thing seems to be happening on the "O.C.D." featurette. Music plays low and I can't hear any of the words coming out of their mouths.

I skipped to the last featurette ("Partners in Crime"?) - same thing.


Hmmm... don't know what to tell you. It's insensitive, but... I'm sure glad this ain't my DVD.



EDIT (Update) :

On the "Partners in Crime" (?) featurette, at 1:43, I can hear what Bitty Schram (Sharona Fleming) is saying at normal volume. But then at 2:01 - the same thing happens again, can't hear what Tony Shalhoub is saying.


this is on my roommate's Sanyo DVD player. I'll try my Emerson later on.

Thanks for checking it for me... That tells me it is a widespread problem, not just a weird problem with my discs/setup...

I'll contact Universal about it, and see what they say!
