HDTV and dvd player question

I was thinking, I don't know if anyone will know the answer or not. If I were to get an HDTV would I need special cords to be able to hook my regular dvd player to it? Also, I was looking at the Blu Ray player at best buy and I noticed they also have upconverting players right beside it. I couldn't find anyone to ask this there but what kind of player is that? Is that just for regular dvds or is that for blu ray/hd dvds?

I'm considering upgrading sometime soon since next year everything is going digital and I'll be forced to change anyway.

You wouldnt need special/different cords, but those cords would improve your picture quality.

Upconverting players improve the quality of regular DVDs so they're almost as good as the HD versions, but not quite (someone prolly knows more about the technical side of this than I do).

You want be forced to buy a new TV next year. Your old set will work fine, provided you have a Cable/Sat box or a digital tuner box hooked to it for over the air stuff.

Anyway a upconverting DVD player provides a better picture for DVDs over a HDMI connection. It will not play HD DVDs or Blu-rays. Depending on how good your TV is at scaling stuff to its native resolution you may or may not see a benefit in a upconverting DVD player. Newer releases will look better than older releases... however it really depends on the DVD transfer. Your DVD will look better, but there will still be a nice leap if you decide to get a Blu-ray player later. All Blu-ray players also upconvert DVDs. However if your going to get a Blu-ray player I would wait on the Profile 1.1 players to arrive or get a PS3 (Is Profile 1.1 already).

Anyway always hook up your DVD player or any other components to the best connection that the TV and device support.
