I know it's pretty pathetic that I'm posting on Christmas Morning, but I couldn't wait to share the news. Since no one will probably read this until tonight, I'm going to have a celebration tomorrow.

I HAVE A DVD PLAYER!!!!!!!!!!!! AND MY FIRST DVD WAS PIRATES!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I haven't watched it yet (there's problems hooking it up) and we may have to return it and get another one. But we definitely have one!
Next week I'm going on a hunt to find Beauty and the Beast.

What others should I get before they go into the vault. Probably Sleeping Beauty and Fantasia, but what about Nemo? I have the VHS, so is it worth it?

The only thing-last week we got Freaky Friday (my mom bought it for us as an early gift). But she didn't want to spoil the surprise, so she got the VHS. I don't want to double dip.

Oh, I'm so happy. Bring on the House of Mouse season sets! And it's great: the new wave of Treasures come out right before my birthday!

Yes! Every movie you ever cared enough to buy on VHS is worth buying on DVD if only for the chance to see it in its proper original aspect ratio (providing the DVD is OAR.) Nemo especially is one of the best discs in recent memory; Pixar CEs always are. And as far as Freaky Friday, if you like the film you'll double dip just to see it in widescreen.

Congrads, Adam! Time to take your VHS out to a feild and beat them with a bat, and then go and replace them with glorious silver discs.

All the DVD's that you love that are from Disney are worth buying.
Other movies that are not example Sony, Paramont, Fox, etc..
are worth buying depends if you like the movie and want to upgrade your DVD collection.
I already have most of my Disny VHS that are now Disney DVD just in case in the future VHS and VCR's are out of stock.
I'm also planning to buy a other DVD player.
Also DVD's have different languages like Spanish and France not just english and many extra feaures on the DVD.

Seriously though, you absolutely owe it to yourself to replace every single VHS w/ DVD, especially the Disney VHS. It's a whole new world (and addiction, as you are about to find out).

What kind of DVD player did you get?

NO clue. But it's making a weird buzzing noise when we try to watch the movie, so now my cousin is coming over to help us set it up.

If that doesn't work, we're going to get a DVD/VCR combo.

We're trying to hook it up through the VCR, so that we can still use it (we have too many VHS to replace them all, and some can't be replaced).

I hope you get it to work soon. I'd be banging my head against a wall right now if I were you. After all that time not having a DVD player....uggggg

It works!

I just spent all morning watching Pirates. I first watched the movie (which I saw at the drive-in) and of course it was phenomenal. But then all the special features. The commentaries, galleries, Wonderful World of Colour, bloopers, deleted scenes, featurettes....

This DVD is very special as it is my first one.


And for the same reason I'll never rid of my VHS. I remember I got my first one (Pinocchio) for my 5th birthday. I've treasured it for 10 years. And then there's all the others, each with a different story and sentimental value. No, I will not beat them to a pulp. Plus, many can't be replaced yet, or just aren't worth it.

So far, my definites list is:

Beauty and the Beast (when I go shopping next week)
Alice in Wonderland (when it comes out)
Walt Disney Treasures (when they come out)

Glad you got your player to work. I remember my first Disney DVD was Pinocchio. I've watched it probably 3 times so far. I now have so many DVDs to choose from that I can watch it probably once a year along with all my others.

Yes, do take it slow. I have some movies that I brought because they were on sale or price reduced. I still have yet to open my tins (of course, people are now saying I should sell, but I will eventually get around to them!). Definately get the tins if nothing else. And Sleeping Beauty before it goes into the Vault

I don't get rid of the tapes either, but I never watch them anymore once I've got a DVD version. And it is my ultimate goal as a DVD collector to upgrade each and every VHS movie, especially the animated classics, to DVD. I've been at it for a few years and it takes a while, mainly because of all the new releases to buy (you don't find a lot of money to go back and get previously-released movies when there's an excess of new ones to buy) but I'm working on it. My first goal is to get all of the animated classics on disc, which you should work towards as well.

My suggestion is to hunt for the two out-of-print Platinums -- Snow White and Beauty and the Beast -- first. They're getting increasingly harder to find but they're worth it (especially Snow White.) Also, run out and get The Lion King and Sleeping Beauty now, too. And the Fantasia discs, too, obviously, before they go OOP next month. The Pixar CEs are musts, too -- the Toy Story movies will take some looking for since they've been OOP since May, but get the others!

Also, if you're a Star Wars fan, you owe it to yourself to get the prequels on DVD. They're two of the best sets out there. But <b>hurry</b> - both The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones go out of print on December 31 (just a few days! Gasp!)

Oh yeah - do we even need to tell you to always go for widescreen when there are dual releases?

Anyway, here's my list of reccomendations from my collection. (Other Disney titles from my collection, such as Hunchback of Notre Dame and Lilo & Stitch, are very good but likely or confirmed to get SEs in the next few years so I'd advise you to hold off unless you need them ASAP.) Most of these you'll be fermilliar with already; if you're not, either pick it up blind or when in doubt, rent first, but I think you might like all of these. (These reccomendations are strictly Disney reccomendations animated classics, Disney live action, or Disney-diwstributed material from other studios, such as Pixar, Studio Gibli or Walden Media. If you'd like non-Disney reccomendations I'd be happy to ablidge.)

Get the Lion King before it goes into the vault! You must have the entire Disney Platinum line-up on DVD.

Prince Adam: Go to the Disney store to try and get Beauty and the Beast. Over here, they've had them in stock for a while.

I agree. But it's worth pointing out that under the new Platinum schedule, The Lion King won't go out of print until 2005. (Another reason besides the reworked schedule is I think Disney wants to keep the original out so that anyone who didn't buy it will buy it when the sequels come out over the next year.)

You have a point there Jake. DIsney is looking to make a big profit (or any profit) when Lion King 1 1/2 and Lion King 2 gets released and re-released. My neice or nephew to be doesn't have any Disney and my brother doesn't see the hipe in them. He'll get it once the child is "babysat" for a few hours on end with one movie! And when that happens it will be in a few months!

I just watched the Audio Commentary with Keira Knightley and Jack Davenport. He really doesn't get a lot of time to talk-she talks A LOT! Which is OK cuz she's my absolute favourite actress. She has great talent, and her looks don't hurt either.


But I'm going shopping on Tuesday, and I can't wait to get Beauty and the Beast. I got the SE soundtrack for Christmas, and I already have the SE VHS. It will be one of the few VHS that I have that will actually be replaced right away.

SO far I plan to replace (in the next few months/weeks):

1.Sleeping Beauty

2.Snow White (if I can find it)

3.Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (maybe)

4.Old Yellar (I want the Vault Disney boxset at Wal-Mart)

5.Escape to Witch Mountain (my VHS was stepped on)

6.Lion King 2 (like this one better than original)

7.Pocahontas (w/Masterpiece Edition)

8.Lilo and Stitch (w/Masterpiece Edition)

9.Beauty and the Beast:Enchanted Christmas (if I can find it)

And if I can find any of the Treasures, they're MINE! That, plus Beauty and the Beast, I've got a lot of work ahead of me to pay for all those!

Another tip Adam: If you want to own the Treasures, I say go to Costco and pick up "Ultimate Disney Treasure Chest" - its a box set of every Treasures DVD released thus far. Of course its pricey at $124, but I would pick that up ASAP if you want them, because they'll be much harder to find than any other Disney DVD on your wish list.

I'm glad you finally got your brand new DVD player, Prince Adam, about time too . Hope you get a good DVD collection so that you can have a great home theater. Don't forget to buy "The Rescuers", "The Fox and the Hound" and "The Black Cauldron".
