Disney soundtracks: What do you have? Are some discontinued?

Hey everyone! :)

I'm very new to this forum - this will be my first time posting. However, I'm very familiar with forums in general. I haven't gotten around to editing my profile or making an icon or signature yet. My name is Katie and I'm a freshman in college. Anyway, I found this Disney forum through a Google search I did when I couldn't find many websites/blogs related to Disney (especially collection-wise).

I figured my first topic would be about the soundtracks since I'm obsessed with those the most. I have yet to begin building my collection of any kind as far as DVDs and CDs are concerned, but we have most on VHS and cassette. After searching through amazon.com, FYE.com, walmart.com and more, I realized that a lot of the soundtracks I was looking for aren't available to be sold as new - they've been discontinued. I was really shocked to find this out, especially because I had only recently realized that some of my favorite Disney movies have already been put back into the vault. Does anyone here know of places I could find the discontinued CDs or when they will be released again? I'd also like to see what everyone's soundtrack collection looks like! I tried searching for such a topic, but I didn't find anything.

Ebay is your best bet for out of print CDs. You can also look on a site called something like soundtrack collectors data base for titles and track listings to see what's out there. Some rarities I own include the original version of Aladdin, Music Behind the Magic, the Great Mouse Detective, the UK Beauty and the Beast, and the German Hunchback musical. I love Disney soundtracks too so it's always nice to meet a fellow fan. I am such a fan I'm tracking down LPs for the obscure ones to make into CD. So far I have Sword in the Stone but my Holy Grail is Robin Hood. There is an LP of score and songs of that and it was released on CD in the UK. I also need the Cd release of the Black Cauldron LP but I have the german issue of the original film score.

Do you have any interesting CDs?

I have 3 Disney soundtracks... It's actually kind of funny how I got to buy the 3 of them.

It began with my renewed obsession with "The Little Mermaid" in 1999 that I knew I had to buy the ST. I searched almost every record store in my area, to no avail. The only Disney STs available were "The Lion King" and "The Jungle Book" and I wasn't keen on those two back then.

Anyway, one time I stumbled upon a copy of "Beauty and the Beast" (original 1991 edition) and I bought it immediately, given that it's my second favorite Disney film. Still searched far and wide for Mermaid and bumped into "Pocahontas". Ka-ching! Then, after I gave up the searching and lost hope in all the annoying employees who claimed they had ordered the album, I asked my sister, who at the time was living in the US, to buy me the CD. And she did (it was the 1997 re-release).

Of-course, about a month later, I went into my record store, out of curiousity, to see what new Disney soundtracks they had and ta-dam, "The Little Mermaid" 1997 edition with Ariel's sillhouette on the cover where she reaches for the surface.

What are the chances of some of the soundtracks being re-released? Does anyone know when certain ones that are out right now will be discontinued? As of now, I don't have any Disney soundtracks... yet. This is what motivates me to start my own collection. I don't know much about Ebay, but that might be my only solution in finding a few.

Amazon.com is great if you can find them used there at a cheap price.

Not sure when there will be reissues, if any. Disney doesn't seem to care about the colleector's market. They let Scott McQueen go and Randy Thorton has said a few times that there were plans to reissue, I think Pinnocchio, with Robin Hoodand Sword in the Stone in a wave of soundtrack restorations but the management pulled the plug. So close to having them all done too.

I forgot about the Aristocats. That's a new Japanese import that has score on it. The US release Which I don't have) only has songs. Aladdin & the King of Thieves is kind of rare too. Not sure about Beauty and the Beast the Enchanted Christmas. I can probably answer most soundtrack questions if I have them but I don't know where else you can go other than Ebay or Amazon to buy. Just see what the prices seem to be going for and you'll find the best deal. Probably a few CD lots to start you out would be the biggest bang for your buck too.

My Disney soundtracks:

- Beauty and the Beast
- Tarzan
- The Lion King
- Pocahontas
- Atlantis (that one I only listened to once)
- Hunchback of Notre Dame

If you want to find more soundtracks, why not look for them in your local library? You could copy them on tape or burn them on a CD.

I own a few Disney soundtracks - Cinderella (when the Plat. DVD came out) and The Little Mermaid (if my avatar is what I think it still is, there's proof :p), the second pirates movie CD, Toy Story 2 soundtrack. I have Pocahontas and the original toy story on tape (wish I could get them on CD,but new, not used).

I'd love to find Beauty and the Beast soundtrack CD.

I have tons and tons of Disney soundtracks on all formats such as vinyl LP's, cassettes, CD's and reel-to-reel tapes that includes theme park music which are on numerous reel tapes recorded off Live365 without this annoying ads. I paused it so that the ads would appeared on that site to resume. I wish SaveNetRadio saves internet radio.

One of the oldest Disney LP's to find are the Disneyland albums that might be collector's items and I should not be given away or donate. I keep them.

Wow! You got a great collection. I know you have the "Fantasia" CD, but I have both the CD and the original LP from 1957. For those of you who haven;'t heard that "Fantasia" was released as a 3-record set from 1957 complete with 24-page booket of all of these songs from that movie and liner notes by Deems Taylor, the host of "Fantasia" from when it was first shown in 1940. It was released as WDX-101 on the Disneyland label in mono back in 1957. And then, a year later, it was released in stereo as STER-101 in 1958 and the sound was quite original but it moves to the left and right channels on your record player to fit the mood. It was later released on both Disney and Buena Vista labels simultaniously, but I have the Buena Vista copy of it with has the master date on the groove that says 2/12/71. Nice to add to my collection.

What a shame. I'm going to do some searching tomorrow online and in stores (if I get the chance) and see what I'm facing. Thanks for the advice!

I didn't think about that, but it's a good idea. I kind of want my own copy, though.

Wow... you really sound like you know what you're talking about. I bet your collection is extremely impressive! How'd you get most of it? Stores? CD shops? Ebay?

Mine's the 50th Anniversary 2 Disc from 1990 with notes about the movie and the restoration of the soundtrack. I was wondering if you owned or had listened to the re-recorded soundtrack taht the did in the 80s before they attempted to restore the original audio.

As as much as I have, I'd still like The Music from Walt Disney's Cinderella CD and The Haunted Mansion: Haunted Hits (which only a true mansion fan could ever want).

Does The Love Bug have a soundtrack?

I would LOVE to get that Fantasia LP for the notes. It's a shame the Disney CD has none.

I always wanted to hear the Irwin Kostel redub. How is that? What does the CD look like so I'd know it when I see it?

Sword in the Stone has an LP soundtrack. The songs are redos of the originals but with the original actors. Some include new verses. May favorite is the complete Legend of the Sword. I edited the best clips from the film and LP together to create a definitive version of each track.

I pulled Love Bug tracks from the 2 disc DVD.

I looked on iTunes, and couldn't find 'The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band'....are you sure it's on there? Also, 'Return to Oz' isn't on there either (maybe I'm mistyping something).

However, I was also able to find the soundtrack to the original 1961 'The Parent Trap!', and 'The Secrets of Life' original soundtrack.

I didn't get those off the itunes store (though they should be there). Family Band was someone's LP they uploaded online in an mp3 form and Return to Oz was another download from the same site. I spent a lot of time searching with google for some of this stuff.
