This might be old news I dont know...

If you want to get a tiny glimpse of what Blu-Ray/HD-DVD has to offer when it comes to Disney 2D classics in High-Definition check out the HD trailer for Disney's Enchanted http://www.apple.com/trailers/disney/enchanted/.

I am aware that the trailer is compressed which means the actual future transfers will be EVEN better - but i still think it gives an impression of what HD can do for Disney's 2D classics... Notice how you can actually see every brush-stroke in the aladdin clip...

(The posted caps are from the HD 720p Enchanted trailer. The caps are uncompressed but chopped up so they would not be too big to upload).

I have so great expectations for the Sleeping Beauty PE BD now... I really wish there was a way for someone to post caps of the Sleeping Beauty PE BD trailer... Can someone who has seen the trailer on Blu-ray tell me if it actually shows the new HD transfer?

Correction > HD DVD won't have anything to offer in this regard as Disney is Blu-ray exclusive.

The is also a preview at the beg. of the Ratatouille BD that shows bits of Nemo and others.

Yes - for now! Many compagnies have switched formats and the war is not over yet...

I just posted this in the Ratatouille thread:

The presentation on the Cars Blu-Ray disc is absolutely jaw-dropping. The detail in the reflections, the sharpness of the lines, and the defined color saturation is simply stunning. The scene where Lightning and Sally go joyriding is just amazing.

I'm never going to watch this in standard definition again, if I can help it. I'm sure Ratatouille is the same quality.

Blu-Ray looks great expanding the picture for watercolors, but not pencil outlines. Just look at the lamp from Aladdin, you can see the parts where the border is thicker and thinner at parts. If the picture is this good, the whole movie might have the rough storyboard animation as seen in bonus features.

Those things were there the first time you saw them, just not so defined. It's like the difference at looking at the Mona Lisa at the Louvre and looking at it in a text book. I'd love to see all the brush marks and detail you would never have seen with a lower quality image. After all, it was drawn by human hands with pencils, not output through 3D rendering.

Roll On Snow White!!!

I know, but it will be distracting to watch the lines switch from thick and thin throughout the whole movie. I wonder if Disney made their films to be seen compressed, that Walt never cared to clean up the pencil marks because he knew no one would see them so they left them like that.

If you didn't notice it in the theater, I doubt you will at home.

I must be the only person in the world who doesn't like High-def.

The movies look much better on regular old DVD than they do in that trailer as far as I'm concerned.

I guess I'm just weird.

um the lamp is suppose to look like that style wise - and in the very next shot on the Blu Ray you see Genie who looks spectacular, no lines at all.

I agree. As it stands right now both formats will be around for awhile. However if either format gains some ground and starts to show good sales numbers (a lot better than they are now), the studios will follow.

HD DVD sold a ton of players last week in the Best Buy/Wal-Mart HD A2 $99 sale. However Blu-ray still leads in disc sales. 2008/2009 will be the break out years if we have them. If not I think combo players will show up at reasonable prices and end the war that way.

Animation looks great on upscaled DVDs, and from what I've heard looks even better in Hi Def. Personally I can't wait to see some of the Animated Classics on either format.

You're not the only one!
I prefer regular dvd.

Plus, I am not paying that much for hd-dvds. I saw some at Movestop for 40 something bucks.
I'll stick to regular dvds; they're fine with me. :]

I'm in agreement here too. I bought a Blu-ray player and some BDs earlier this year only to take back the player and sell the BDs the next week. Didn't see the big deal. I actually prefer the quality on standard DVDs.

You prefer a smaller resolution? You mean it looks better? I don't believe that. If you said you feel the larger resolution is redundant or not worth the money, then I'd believe you. But there is no possibility it can look worse than standard resolution. That would mean films look better on DVD than they look at the movie theaters.

Blue Ray, High Definiton...it all means that you have to buy new expensive apparatus and expensive Blue ray/high definition disks of your favourite movies. I'm just building up my collection of Disney DVD's and haven't even replaces every old VHS tape yet. I think the regular DVD's are fine. I have other priorities.

For instance: I'm considering buying a region- free DVD player. I like to have some more 'Disney treasures' but Disney doesn't seem to be very concerned with releasing them in another format than region 1. I really don't understand why I cannot get 'More silly Symphonies". in region 2 format. De they think people outside America/Canada won't be interested? :x

 Denial aint just a river in Egypt.

I have about 30 BDs and my avg price is around $17. Obviously, that would be a little lower if I had bought the dvds instead (the last dvd I bought was Cars last year). The point is the increased AV quality is worth a few dollars/disc more and if you look for bargains the price of the media isn't really a factor.

Everyone has to make there own decisions re: HDM and I'm sure for some people dvd is good enough. But please, do not fool yourself that there is no difference or that dvd is as good as BD or HD DVD. It isn't.

There are basically 2 options here. You're either saying that you prefer the *lower* quality of dvd or you had something seriously out of whack as far as your settings/connections.

Standard resolution doesn't make the movie blurry or show off the imperfections like places where colour wasn't fully added or the lines aren't smooth and connected.

Bigger isn't always better. Espically when it comes to 2-D animation.

People have complained that the restorations done for DVD have made the movies look different than they did when originally created. Well to make the 2-D movies look perfect for HD they are going to need to alter a lot of the images to remove and perfect things that were left in the original frames.

Can you imagine how bad the movies made using the xerox process are going to look with a better resolution? No wonder Disney didn't put The Jungle Book or 101 Dalmatians on Blu-Ray. HD would kill them.

As for theater presentation, well nothing beats the expereince, but the actual movie looks much better on DVD when the grain and big black spots from the filmstrip aren't there.

I'm not saying HD isn't good for other movies, but it isn't the best thing to happen to 2-D animation. And it certainly isn't this ground breaking innovation alot of people make it out to be for film as a whole.

I think HD is perfect for 2D animation, because the only time I really felt HD was super cool was when I watched the animated opening scene of "Casino Royale", so I have great expectations for Disney 2D in HD.
And so what if HD or 3D converted movies where not part of Walt Disney's vision, the only thing that matters is that people enjoy it.
