The Masters of Horror films (season 1)

Dreams In the Witch-House - D- - didn't like it. Unsatisfying. The acting felt terribly uneven, especially during key dialogue-heavy scenes. The ending went from bad to good to bad again to much worse. It really was the worst episode of the 1st season, next to Mick Garris's unfortunate Chocolate.

Haekel's Tale - C - boring for a long time at first but it began to get steadily more interesting, until the ending... which was excellent. Needs a new beginning though.

Imprint - C+ - confusing and shocking. Visually stunning, as most of Miike's films are. And it seemed to have a fairly good message if you're willing to look very closely at all the bad events. It's certainly an unforgettable experience. But the torture scene was badly set-up and the performance by Billy Drago was painfully bad.

Incident On and Off a Mountain Road - C+ - visually impressive and exciting, but most of the dialogue scenes don't gel and the relationships need quite a bit more work. Plus, it was the shortest of all 13 of the Masters of Horror films, so it wouldn't have hurt to rewrite or extend the dialogue sequences.

Dance of the Dead - C - the ending's the only thing that brings this film/episode down at all. But it definitely brings it down hard. Although, the rest of it (first 30 minutes) is refreshingly well-plotted, visualized, and put together. Of much of the teen apocalypse and horror oriented material that's out there, this is really not bad at all. Except for the ending, which desperately throws in a cheap shock revelation and fails miserably. Not to mention the infamous "dance of the dead" images aren't half as disturbing as they're supposed to be. In a future with wilder people, for that to be accepted as 'extreme entertainment' is a stretch to put it mildly.

Deer Woman - B - a much sillier and frantically slapstickier version of Innocent Blood, I laughed. And that's all that matters. Was it scary? No. But true to form, in case the first big JUMP moment didn't get you, the director puts in a better one toward the end that definitely got a reaction out of me. It's very amusing, though ultimately immature and a little forced.

Cigarette Burns - A- - visually incredible, great performances, and an overall classy approach. But more than a little was lost in the translation. I was lost quite a few times.

Fair Haired Child - A - almost everything about this film was perfect. It would be easier and quicker to say what didn't work about it. It became too talky and a little emotional toward the ending, which hurt the stylish and moody pacing and flow of the movie. But really it is stylish beyond stylish, amazingly acted, and completely satisfying.

Yeah, but volume 7 would have looked really odd if it was titled "What Movie Did You Just Watch? And Robin".

I saw The Game Plan last night and actually liked it. While not the greatest family comedy in the world, it was a light, silly, and at times heartfelt movie that the whole family can enjoy. I'd give it a B.

The Seeker: The Dark is Rising - A lot better than I expected. As an adaptation of the book, my mom said it was way off, but as a standalone film it was fairly enjoyable. Aside from a few goofy moments, I'd say it's a solid family entertainment and one of only two movies out right now that are both family-appropriate and enjoyable for almost everybody. B-

I saw Superbad two nights ago. Another good one from Judd Apatow and Seth rogen.

1982's classic Flash Gordon.....with the awesome Queen soundtrack!

I'm half-watching "Edward Scissorhands" (Bobby's watching it in the other room, & I can see it from here)

With Halloween around the corner, I am participating in a watch 100 horror movies in October marathon, and not doing well, but one of my favorite titles that I have watched is Circus of Horrors (1960) which stars Anton Diffring, and spawned a Top Ten song called "Look For A Star". Really good, creepy horror film.

I got the 2-disk Bram Stoker's Dracula Collector's Edition and I just finished it. AMAZING visuals and a really good story. I plan on watching Fantastic Four 2 tonight.

I'm off too. In 7 days, I've only got 3 down. But, figure it this way - if you start on October 11th, or the 10th if you get a lot of Trick-or-Treaters, you only have to watch 5 movies per day and you'll make 100 easy. I watched 3 movies on October 1st and then fell tragically behind. Those included...



The Blair Witch Project (1999) - D-
Not as bad as I used to think it was, but still completely worthless as a horror film. More of a documentary on how to sucker people into making you a millionaire. Or, the studio millions of horror genre-killing dollars.


The Frighteners (1996) - D
Still a godawful piece of trash. But Dee Wallace is just amazing in it. I feel like it's her best horror role to date. She's my new favorite horror hag. No offense, Dee- I love you and you still look great! For her small role, she packs a wallop. Oh yeah, and the music is excellent. I especially liked the cover songs of "Don't Fear the Reaper" (much better than the one used in Scream) and I don't know the name of it but it goes, "Don't you remember you told me you loved me, baby..."


Rob Zombie's House of 1,000 Corpses (200?) - C-
Okay, I didn't get this movie for a while, but now I understand it completely: the first half is good. With some scenes that are just amazing (especially the "Murder Ride" sequence). The second half, right after Baby Firefly's musical number, is awful beyond description, with the exception of a few short moments (maybe 3 total) that lift it up.

Knocked Up-Very raunchy...I didn't liek it much. Katahrine Heigl was the only thing that attracted it to me.

Hocus Pocus(1993) was on yestarday so I had to watch it. You all know i love it but here are some of my favourite quotes:

Winifred: You know, I always wanted children, and now I think I'll have one. ON TOAST!

Winifred: We're just three kindly old spinster ladies!
Mary: Spending a quiet evening at home.
Sarah: Sucking the lives out of children!

and of course

althogh I love every line.

Superbad - Was actually supergood. It felt genuine. I have so many friends that are exactly like that so relating to their ridiculous situations was easy. What is it though with long comedies nowadays? This movie could've easily been boiled down to a 90 minute flick. Oh well... B

Lucio Fulci's Manhattan Baby (1982) - D+
No, it's not a good movie. But then, neither are most of Fulci's movies. It actually never fails to hold my attention throughout the whole ghastly thing. Plus... who wouldn't love that "lousy lesbian" line? It cracks me up everytime. I think it's one of his... sort of best in this type of genre because it doesn't go overboard on gore effects. Which of course is one of the reason Fulci fans don't like it. At all.

I'm watching Garden State right now.

I watched "Touki Bouki" for my Black Cinema class yesterday, and "The Promise" for my German Film class yesterday.

I really liked the latter, but the former, not as much.

Magicians

Mitchell and Webb's feature-film project. I'm not sure how I feel about this. Considering the pedigree (the stars and written and directed by the creators of Peep Show) it does disappoint.

There's a couple of major reasons why.

Firstly Michell and Webb come across as nothing more than their Peep Show characters, his isn't that surprising I guess considering the writers and the fact their Peep Show alter-egos are mainly based on themselves, but considering some of the character turns they managed in their sketch show, it does seem disappointing.

Secondly, its nothing more than a TV sit-com up on the big screen. And even more disappointing (especially as it deals with death) its not even as dark as some of the themes explored in Peep Show. There's nothing that stands out as saying "I need a movie to present this".

But like I say, I'm torn because it is entertaining, funny and even dramatic. A pleasent way to spend an evening, especially as its dirt cheap in the supermarket price wars.
