January 2008 Disney DVD Discontinuations Discussion

I know there has not yet been an official announcement on this, but it occured to me this morning that we should be hearing something soon about what titles Disney will pull at the end of January. They normally like to make a big deal about it and with the fourth quarter coming up, it's a natural time to get these back in ads with "Last Chance to Buy!" next to them. I'm curious, of course, because there are a lot of new titles I want this fall, and yet I want to make sure that I get all of these that I want before they leave. I've missed out on some OOP stuff before and it's been hell waiting for their return (fortunately, Jungle Book and 101 Dalmatians are closer now than they once were.)

Just an observation. I wonder what the titles are. Cinderella and its cheapquels would seem to be obvious now that the third one has been successfully launched. But I wonder what else.

I'm with you on Cinderella, I'm pretty sure that one along with its two sequels will be going OOP. There is still Aladdin and its two sequels which have been out for almost three years now which is a long time compared to the three months for Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, etc.

Probably around November. I believe that's when they announced it last year, but I honestly don't remember.

I expect that Cinderella and Aladdin along with both sequels for each will be vaulted along with two or three gold collection discs that will recieve new editions sometime soon (though Amigos and Caballeros have been gone since Jan of this year and we still have heard nothing, so who knows). I'm guessing that Hercules and both Rescuers film will go OOP, though I have no decent reason for either.

I'm hoping the Black Cauldron will be vaulted and become the october/november release for next year, but the odds of that are pretty low since Disney hates TBC.

I got a package today to join the Disney Movie Club. On one of the sheets in the envelope it has listed as going into the vault soon:
Cinderella III
Aladdin
Aladdin: The Return of Jafar
Aladdin and the King of Thieves

I wouldn't be surprised if Cinderella I went into vault with Cinderella III, given C-1's been on the shelves for nearly two years now.

Well, I was going to post a few days ago that I thought that Cinderella would definately go back in the vault, and if we're lucky Aladdin would go as well. I also figured The Little Mermaid would go along with it, but I guess I was wrong. But I definately think that Cindy III going back in the vault is a big indicator that the original will follow...hopefully.

I'm picking up a new copy of Cindy 3 for $8 at Video Circus.

It is DEFINITLY going OOP because...well it needs to!!!!! And so does Cinderella I. But I need to get my hands on the Aladdin II/III collection before it goes out!

It's possible. LATT went into the vault less than a year after its release.

UD Front Page posted about it two days before DavisDVD, and there was discussion about it on the forums here (where Cindy 3 and the Aladdin movies were confirmed on 9/12/07).

Stupid it may be, but it's also a genius marketing scheme.

Okay,i see why Cinderella PE,Aladdin PE (about time) and Aladdin 2\3 will go to the valut but Cinderella only came out in March! it's not much time for people to buy it,and what's the point by releasing Cinderella II in December and mounth later return it to the valut.

As far as "Cinderella III" goes, those who have been putting off buying it will be forced to buy it before it enters the vault, so many people will end up buying it if they know that it'll be their last chance for a while (unless they want to deal with buying a possible bootleg online).

As far as "Cinderella II" goes, in my experience, that is the hardest Disney DVD to come by (and not get a bootleg). A lot of people who missed out the first time, or who only bought the VHS, will definitely buy the movie, and, knowing that it'll only be out for a month or so, will have to pick it up and not wait to buy it.

Why was Aladidn out for soooo long?! Was it because it didnt sell as well as other Platinums?

When they say 'going into the vault' i have always wondered what that phrase actually meant; do they stop making them? Or do they physically pull them from the shelves?

Also, in England when I go to almost any DVD store, The Little Mermiad Platinum Edition is almost never around, only the box set of I and II. Does that mean its still a big seller? I hope so!
