I just trying to be make sure if anything is considered Disney, but does anybody listened to the Waltz from "Sleeping Beauty"? They used the melody of "Once Upon a Dream" but it was taken from the LP "The Sleeping Beauty Ballet". It was conducted by Eugene Ormandy & the Philadelphia Orchestra (not to mention Leopold Strokowski conducting the same orchestra from "Fantasia"). It was first released on Columbia Masterworks in the 1950's and then later released so many times in the 60's and on RCA Red Seal label in the 1970's.

Many conductors including Arthur Fiedler, Erich Kunzel and many others conducting the Tchaikovsky classic ballet.

This was before "Sleeping Beauty" came along around 1959 and it was a Disney animated classic.

I found this audio from that particular LP and here it is. Waltz from "Sleeping Beauty" before they used "Once Upon a Dream" as a melody in a Disney film.

Sorry but I didn't quite get your question. Yes, disney used and modified a classical piece of Tchaikovsky to make the song "Once Upon a Dream". That doesn't mean they own the classical pioece 'cause...they don't!

Basicly all of the music (underscore and songs) in Sleeping Beauty are adapted from the Tchaikowsky ballet. It is mentioned in the opening credits of the film as well.

Yes! They did. The waltz from the "Sleeping Beauty" Ballet Suite modifies the classical piece and made it turned into a song "Once Upon a Dream" inspired by Tchaikovsky.

But I wouldn't use the term "inspired by", because Once Upon a Dream uses the Tchaikowsky melody, namely The Sleeping Beauty Waltz (almost) exactly as it was originally witten.

But have you noticed that I Wonder uses the B part of the same waltz as it's melody?

Disney actually aired a special about Peter (Pyotr) Tchaikovsky around the time of Sleeping Beauty's first release. Scenes from it that stuck in my head include Peter accidentally smashing a glass window as he thought of music, to a scene of him semi-delirious aboard an ocean liner pitching in a storm, also dreaming about music.

The Peter Tchaikovsky Story, an episode of "Disneyland" that aired January 30, 1959. It also appears in the two-disc Special Edition DVD for Sleeping Beauty.

Um... I think all of Tchaikovsky's music would be in the public domain by now. Anybody can use classical music for free, just so long as they don't claim that they created it.

I got this song right off the LP, which has nothing to do with Disney. It was by Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra (not the one with Leopold Strokowski conducting from "Fantasia"). This was the one.



It was on the RCA Victor label under the "Red Seal" name and it was from 1974. The third track from that LP had the waltz before they used as a melody of "Once Upon a Dream" in a Disney film. The other half was in the middle of a song, they also used a melody of "I Wonder" used in the film, but it was definitely in the middle of a song. I hope they should give these major record labels (Columbia Masterworks, RCA Victor "Red Seal", etc.) credit for that. Here is a pic of the label.

Actually, two songs were derived from the SLEEPING BEAUTY WALTZ,
ONCE UPON A DREAM and also, I WONDER, which is the first song heard
from Aura when she is introduced at age 16. As for Eugene Ormandy, I had the priviledge of meeting him when I was seven years old. I lived next door to a music student who was a counsler at the Interlocken Music Camp. I was called into the backyard by his mother who introduced me to Mr. Ormandy, and we shook hands over the back fence.

I think it's safe to assume it's the same Philadelphia Orchestra, even though he conductor isn't the same one.

I was at a thrift store today and I found an LP called "The Wonderful Waltz of Tchaikovsky & Strauss. The LP was released on the Columbia Masterworks label, on track #4 on side 1, there is a waltz from "Sleeping Beauty" which was on that record.

Billy Moon was mentioned on my thread about the two melodies heard from the movie "Sleeping Beauty". Part A has "Once Upon a Dream" and Part B has "I Wonder".

Thanks to Ray Pointer for mentioning Eugene Ormandy and the "Sleeping Beauty" waltz. I will make a video of a record being played as well with the music. This will be posted on iMeem soon.
