Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will star in “Witch Mountain” for Walt Disney Pictures. Andy Fickman is directing, and the studio will begin production in March.
Johnson, who just teamed with Fickman in the Disney family comedy “The Game Plan,” is in negotiations to play a Las Vegas cab driver who picks up a pair of siblings with magical powers. Plot advances the storyline from the original “Escape to Witch Mountain,” which Disney released in 1975.
Andrew Gunn produces through his Gunn Films shingle, and Ann Marie Sanderlin is exec producer. Matt Lopez wrote the most recent draft.
It "advances" the storyline from the original? Does that mean it's a remake? Or does it continue from where the sequel left off?

Hmmm... not sure, Amy. Either way, I'm intrigued! I'm all for more "Witch Mountain", although the fact that The Rock is in it isn't at all promising.

I've read on a couple of different movie sites that it's going to be a "modern remake"...

The original film is one of my favorite movies. It sounds like it will be a remake with the settings, etc. a little different. I agree with Aaron about the Rock. Hopefully more news will come soon.

I loved the original. I have it on tape and watched it a million times when I was little. I wasn't a huge fan of the 90's remake with Erik Von Detten, but I did see it several times. I'm not a big fan of The Rock, but I am interested in the news on this thing.

Somehow, The Rock doesn't seem to be the cab driving type to me... I can't decide whether i'd feel safer or more scared to see he was my cab driver.
Overall I like The Rock though, so maybe this'll be ok.

If this is a success, who knows. Maybe they'll remake Bedknobs and Broomsticks with Paris Hilton!

Ms. Price: What was your name, you said?
Carie (as played by Paris Hilton): Car-ay lady.
Ms. Price: Carie, you'll sleep on the couch over there.
Carie: Like OMG, are you serious?! I'm not, like, trash you know. I have, like, I think, like, lost a family or something and, like, you know, like, I totlally need my own space and a different bed, so like if you could do better you old crab, that would be really good. Okay?
I posted a thread awhile back about Disney trying to remake Bedknobs and Broomsticks, I'll find a link later.
Back on topic, I am NOT looking forward to this sequel. I have seen to many crappy remaks of good Disney live action films (That Darn Cat being the worst of them all). I'll stick to my DVD of the original, Disney.
Edit, found the link:

Great, another bad Disney remake is on the way. They seriously need to stop doing this.

I like The Rock! I can't wait to see him in The Game Plan, I think he's a great actor. Anyways, I loved Escape to Witch Mountain when I was a kid, so I'm excited to see what comes of this news!

It would appear this atroscity has been named.
From UD's recently updated coming movies page
Race to Witch Mountain - File this one in the "Terrible Ideas" category. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and his Game Plan director Andy Fickman reunite in what's being called an "action thriller" remake of the fondly-remembered 1975 Disney fantasy Escape to Witch Mountain. Johnson will play a Las Vegas cab driver who picks up two young siblings with paranormal powers, played by Bridge to Terabithia's AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig (The Seeker: The Dark is Rising). Ciaran Hinds will co-star as the leader of a group set to hunt down the kids. Bedtime Stories writer Matt Lopez is credited with the screenplay, which is traced back to Alexander Key's 1968 novel. With production set to commence imminently, this film is scheduled to open on March 13, 2009.

I don't know about a remake. Disney should stop the remakes. Enough is Enough. I prefer the original Swiss Family Robinson to the tv version they made with Jane Seymour. I like both Parent Trap movies, but I desperately still want the Vault Disney Version and not the "double movie" edition, with Haley Mills.
It could turn out to be good, though. My niece might see it, as she was reluctant to be "forced" to watch the original with me.
I did LOVE Game Plan, though. One of my favorites.

According to the quote from Variety that started this thread, "the plot advances the storyline from the original Escape To Witch Mountain. This doesn't sound like a remake but rather another movie in the series...much like Herbie Fully Loaded was another Love Bug movie but not a direct remake like The Parent Trap or That Darn Cat were. The
The original Witch Mountain movies are two of my all time favorite Disney movies. With the new movie, I'm sure I'll enjoy a modern twist on the same theme. With Andy Fickman directing, it should be an enjoyable movie. He did a great job with The Game Plan, and I enjoyed the bonus material that talked with and about him and his directing style.
