FINALLY!! The French version has been out for AGES... I look at it longingly every time I visit Montreal... Now I can own the set in English! I'll be picking this up for sure! Or at least putting it on my Christmas list...

It might be an impulse buy for me, or maybe a Christmas list item. Best thing about Christmas items, if you don't get them they're always cheaper by then

This is the best TV-DVD news I've heard in a long time! It may sound geeky, but I love the Smurfs and have been waiting for years for a DVD to be released. I just hope this first volume sells well so they release the rest.

Like Princess Stitch said, it has been out for a really long time in French so I watched it a while ago. I loved the Smurfs when I was a kid!!! I had a great time watching them as a grown-up ;)

Tvshowsondvd.com has released the episode list for the season one, volume 1 release:

Am I the only one hoping that Warner Bros. changes their minds and makes this set the Complete First Season?

I've been hearing a lot of rumors about the future (if any) of these releases. Mainly, that Warner Bros. doesn't own the rights to any episodes after Season 6. I hope that's not true. I would hate to start buying these sets only to find out that they don't have the ability to release the whole series.

Well that's a rather disappointing small list of extras. I mean, I'm glad that they will be including the springtime special, but a music video??? That's all they can come up with?!? Oh well, I guess it's the episodes that matter the most.

I love Warner Bros and Warner DVDs in general. I really do. But I don't understand their "fixed disc" mentality on their Hanna Barbara releases.

Every other TV show gets as many discs allocated to it as required. On average this is 6 for a 22-26 episode season. But Warner have shown themselves to be flexible on this as needs change - such as the 8 disc "Adventures of Brisco County Jr" release (no double sided discs on that collection).

So why do they have it seemingly set in stone that Hanna Barbera releases can only be a set number of discs? All those "Flintstones" sets which had a double sided-disc. In fact, from memoary, I think "The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Hour" had 3 of the 4 discs double-sided.

In fact, what's worse is that now they seem to think only 2 disc sets are a valid concern (although "Wait 'Till Your Father Gets Home" was a 4 disc set like their older releases). But again this results in double sided discs (such as the "Space Ghost" and "Birdman" releases). Why? Older Hanna Barbera sets like "Penelope Pitstop" were okay to have 3 discs. Why limit everything to 2 discs now, and force content onto flip-sides?

Or worse, the new trend half-season sets where previously the whole season would have been released. "The Smurfs" seems to be a case in point, but other examples are "The All-New Superfriends Hour" and the upcoming "Richie Rich/Scooby-Doo" release. All have on two discs approximately half the content of a full season

It's a disappointing trend, which shows no sign of stopping. It appears Warner think these sets only appeal to impulse buyers who (presumably) are more likely to go for a lower priced set (but then, why not split "Wait 'Till Your Father Gets Home"?). But logically its going to be a mess - as the review Luke wrote points out, there's hundreds of "Smurfs" cartoons. Splitting them up to 2 disc sets rather than 4 discs sets sounds totally insane.

I don't get that either. Seems like they should have just done the entire first season. Made for a more review-friendly experience this way, at least. But despite the graphic they have provided, neither of the discs is double-sided.

One of my next Warner reviews, the Academy Award Animation Collection, will cover a set that should have an extra disc as it is missing a bunch of Warner-owned nominated shorts. But that's 3 discs to begin with.
