as many of you know..i am a collector of 2 DISK disney dvd's..i got into collectiong relatively early(lion king PE) and own all of the 2-disk editions after that(except for princess bride still need that 1) i was wondering..since disney also seems to be releasing 1 disk special editions..should i also buy those?? films i love such as fox and the hound, dumbo, robin hood, etc. i am just afraid that the way disney is going..they will soon re-release theose movies as 2-disk SE..what is your opinion??

1.The Princess Bride isn't a Disney movie, so unless you mean The Princess Diaries, you've got all of Disney's 2-disc sets.

2. The single disc releases of stuff like Dumbo, Pooh, and Robin Hood are the best we're going to get for a while, so I say get them now. Avoid the Gold Classics discs since Disney seems to be phasing that line out by re-releases films in that collection, even if the re-releases are marginal improvements.

1. thats what i meant..i was just reading that for school and that swhy that slipped out.

2. i have always avoided gold collections and such and because of what u said may start buying the 1 disk SE

I wish we had a better insight on what Disney is planning to release. I only have three Gold Collection DVDs right now and they are Sword in the Stone, The Rescuers Down Under, and Hercules. I got them because there wasn't any other edition available. I do hope they come up with special editions for these eventually.

Its really hard to buy any movie anymore without the possibility of a new edition coming out later. I would buy the movies you want now, and if a better edition is released later upgrade the movies you want to.

My attitude with DVDs is to always go for the edition that offers the most, both in presentation quality and extras. If there's a 3 disc version out, that's the one I want. In fact, I've had to pass on a lot of great releases in the past couple of years because I am holding out for the multi-disc editions and can't always afford them right away. Sometimes I don't get around to seeing all the extras for a while or at all, but I still like to know I have them if I want them. When it comes to single disc editions, I'm willing to get them if they're the best edition available. I haven't bought some of the newer ones lately though, since they sometimes don't seem to be any better than previous releases. I didn't get the rereleases of Fox and the Hound or Robin Hood because the restorations were apparently not a very big deal and they didn't offer much for new extras. I might be willing to get them if I found them really cheap eventually, but I'm not concerned because I have the older releases. I do want to get the Dumbo rerelease because I hear the restoration is a big improvement over the Gold Collection release I already have. Also, when I get a newer edition of something, I usually give the older edition to my little sis. However, if the older edition has an extra or something about the new one doesn't, I hang on to it too. For example, I still have my old DVD of the Little Mermaid because it is unedited. I even still have the VHS because it has that controversial cover art.

One of the movies in the Gold Collection that needs big-time restoration is The Black Cauldron. I ordered it and it arrived yesterday and of course I had to watch it right away. It was the fist time I saw it since it came out theatrically in '85. Wow . I wasn't too impressed with the DVD transfer . Great movie but this one needs work and I hope it does get a special edition in the future.

My personal thought when choosing whether to buy a 2-or-more-disc vs. 1-disc set is whether or not I truly loved the film and/or want to know more about it. Like I just posted a while ago in another thread, films like those of the Pirates series for example don't leave me thinking "Oh wow, I don't mind shelling out more money for an extra disc with a few interesting featurettes."

If there is a 1 Disc version and a 2 Disc version,I would definitly go for the 2 Disc one. If there only happened to be a 1 Disc version,I'd get it. It all really just depends on how much you enjoy the film. I just bought The Fox and the Hound from Blockbuster,and that's 1 Disc and I'm pleased with it. At least all the Platinums are 2 discs...

I'm glad I'm not the only one The Little Merman. I buy 1 disc versions sometimes as well.

However for certain movies the 2 + disc editions are must haves.

I generally think if I'm interested enough to buy the film in the first place, I want the best version of it there is, with the most special features. If a new one comes out later...then it depends how good the features are.

Certainly, certainly DP. I mean, in the case of a movie such as The Wizard of Oz I sprang for the Three-Disc Collector's Edition because it's one of my all time favorites. However this week I plan on simply buying the widescreen version of 300. I highly enjoyed the flick, but $13.99 vs. $22.99 is something my wallet needs not discuss.

I don't know - what's your "game"? Are you first and foremost going for a uniform look on the shelf? If so, you might want to stick to the 2-disc editions. If, however, the movies and other interesting content are most important, I'd basically recommend buying the best edition available - which in some cases will be a single disc...

See that's the way I *should* think, but instead I always seem to go back and evntually buy the more expensive edition even if it's a movie I only liked well enough to own I can't help it

I used to be a 2-Disc only collector as well but with some of my favourite movies coming out on 1-Disc I just started collecting Special Editions, I think you should do the same, films like Hercules and Hunchback have more chance of having another release than films like Dumbo and Robin Hood (who just got SEs)

maybe because of this information, i will begin collecting the one disk special editions...dumbo, the fox and the hound, robin..any others i am missing?? i still am not sure about winnie the pooh
