Any Thoughts??? Does this Mean Disney Supports Blu Ray or Do they also like the idea of Downloading Movies instead of using any discs...... I guess only time will tell....or a press release

Maybe they're just putting these movies out there for XBox users to see if that relatively small demographic ultimately gives Disney a lot of money through this...

They still support Blu-Ray, though.

These are only for rental as far as I know. It was announced at E3 and its pretty big news for Microsoft in my opinion. Disney at this time is Blu-ray exclusive (unless you like to import HD DVDs/some titles are distributed outside the US on HD DVD), but it shows that they are broadening their HD market. They want abandon Blu-ray in favor of downloads though.

I am very interested to see how this goes for Disney and for Microsoft.

It may be a "small market", but its bigger than the Blu-Ray market at this time. And at E3 Microsoft promised the video marketplace for Europe sometime this year (but I'll believe it when I see it - its been semi-promised for about 18 months) which will make the market even bigger.

I really don't see any conflict between downloading and publishing on DVD, Blu-Ray or (should they eventually do it) HD DVD. You may as well say that having Disney movies on cable VOD means that they don't want people to buy Blu-Ray discs. There's room for everything - Plenty of people buy Disney DVDs at the moment, even though they could choose just to rent them, for example.

I can't try these downloads - my gamertag is locked out of the US Marketplace - but I have read that while they are HD, they only have Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtracks. They also seem to be about 1.5GB to download - compared to (potentially) 50GB on Blu-Ray, so all being equal the Xbox downloads shouldn't come close to matching the quality presented on a physical disc.

Disney do seem to be having some "wobbles" about Blu-Ray though. Titles being pushed back (such as Cars) and their Blu-Ray release slate is a little bare compared to other studios like Sony's or Warners. One film "Hoax" was announced for Blu-Ray and then cancelled the following day. I think this is just because Blu-Ray sales haven't taken up as quickly as they expected - I think Disney are waiting for [a] more installed players and analysing their Pirates of the Caribbean sales data.

Disney's just trying to make back all their Pixar money, since the movies themselves won't do it!
