I guess I'll use this thread to continue speculation for the February DVD release of Return to Oz. Will it be the same as the Anchor Bay one? Will it have special features.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH

We should know by now, since it's obviously been pressed or at least mastered if they're making a February 3 release date. But, of course, we don't know. Still.

o.k. i just bought return to oz on ebay for 16 bucks. if disney is releasing it in february and luke here doesn't have the specs yet i'm taking a big chance anticipating a disc that may just well be full screen and possibly edited somehow and cost more. if this happens i may hold the preferred copy before the price starts shooting through the roof on an OOP unedited disney flick.

I was pretty happy with the anchor bay release, but the fact that they crammed the pan and scan version on the same disc really hurt the picture in my opinion. That DVD really has some compression issues. That and the fact that Disney forced Anchor Bay to remove the theatrical trailer at the last minute.

So now that Disney is making Anchor Bay discontinue their DVD and is planning to release its own version, I'm sort of raising the bar for them. But I don't have my hopes up. I'm just praying for an anamorphic widescreen transfer.

All I've heard is that most of February's releases are supposedly going to be fullscreen, but with some exceptions. Unfortunately, that does me little good at knowing which are which. If I had to guess, I'd say Return to Oz is one of the films more likely to be in widescreen, and one would hope that this would mean an anamorphic transfer. But that's just speculation. Really not cool of them to keep these specs a mystery.

Possibly fullscreen? No, don't say that!

I'm getting a bit nervous now.

me too. mostly because you were talking about compression issues on the AB disc. can i ask which region yours is? i'm asking because i think two pal movies on one disc may have to be compressed more than two films that are ntsc format.

Region 1.

It's the only AB DVD I have this problem with. They offer lots of other movies in both formats on the same side and the image quality is fine. I don't know what happened with Oz. This is why I hope Disney is doing a new transfer, rather than porting AB's.

It doesn't necessarily mean that yours will look worse or even as bad as Region 1.

Today I got a reply from Disney who once again told me that they had no info on the specs AT ALL. And they've been telling me this for three months. Clearly this is going to be a rushed job.
