Powerful non-Disney songs.

I've always noticed that the quality of non-Disney songs in other animated features was always of bad quality, kiddie songs, but there have been so many songs in other films that have really surprised me. Here are three of those, can you guess what movies these are from? and what other non-Disney songs have surprised you?

#1:

How very special are we,
for just a moment to be,
part of life's eternal rhyme,

How very special are we,
to have in our family tree,
Mother Earth and Father Time.

He turns the seasons around,
and so she changes her gown,
but they always look, in their prime.

They go on dancing their dance,
of everlasting romance,
Mother Earth and Father Time.

The summer larks return to sing,
oh, what a gift, they give,
then autumn days grown short and cold,
oh, what a joy to live.

How very special are we,
for just a moment to be,
part of life's eternal rhyme,

How very special are we,
to have in our family tree,
Mother Earth and Father Time.

#2:

I still remember a summer gone by,
why was it over so fast?

I still remember when we said 'goodbye',
why can't our summer times last?

Do you remember me?
Once I called you my own,

I'm sad as I can be,
It's no fun all alone,

Why can't a memory,
roll away like a tear?

Why do I go to my window,
hoping you will appear?

'cause I need you,
'cause I miss you,
'cause I wish you were here.

#3:

It's a new day,
we all can agree,
that the sun shines,
brought to you absolutely free.

Free as running water,
fresh as morning dew,
No matter who's the leader,
when the sun sets down,
its gone Charlie Brown.

So race for your life,

Take a chance 'cause
there's no second dance,
till it's a new day.

I'll tell you a secret,
you're about to face a test,
and you have to your best,
don't forget, just remember,
just remember, don't forget.

Your life is free as running water,
fresh as morning dew,
doesn't matter who's the leader,
if you try, we're behind you,
Charlie Brown.

So race for your life...
Charlie Brown.

The good thing about this last song is that the music repeats several times during the film and that makes even more memorable. Are you ready to guess what films do these songs belong to?

The first one's from Charlotte's Webb. And it's beautiful. And by the way, did anyone see Charlotte's Webb 2? I didn't bother. Making a sequel to a 30-something year old movie is Disney's territory. Plus, Fern didn't even look the same.

Yes, and we all know that the music in Charlotte's Web was written by Sherman and Sherman, meaning it's generally of Disney quality. But, yes, I enjoy Charlotte's Web, if only just for nostalgia reasons.

Quest for Camelot, if not a good movie, has GREAT songs, some bot as good as the rest, but the soundtrack is amazing, i don't actually own the cd, but i hav the DVD so when i want to hear one of the songs i just pop it in....

I absolutely love the song I Stand Alone (the steve Perry version is a little better in the way it's sung, but the movie version has better lyrics), also Looking Through your Eyes (the movie version, NOT lyan rhymes version or however u spell her name) and On My Father's Wings is good...

Come to think of it I think I'm goin to listen to some of those songs right now!

Neat topic!

The big props do indeed go to Charlotte's Web, a film that I saw on TV at age 5 or 6..yes, I cried like a little wuss. How can you not??!!

"Snoopy Come Home" also made me cry as a wee tot. The big going-away party scene...(sob)

Getting back on topic, I think "The Brave Little Toaster" has top-flight songs and is just an all-around great old-fashioned cartoon movie.

Of course, the Muppets aren't cartoon characters but I gotta mention that their songs (the Henson-era films) were always perfectly done.

"Bright Eyes," from Watership Down...

"There's a fog along the horizon,
"A strange glow in the sky.
"And nobody seems to know where you go
"And what does it mean?
"Oh, is it a dream?
"Bright eyes,
"Burning like fire.
"How can the light that burns so brightly
"Suddenly burn so pale?
"Bright eyes..."

I don't remember all the words, but I've always found this one from Anastasia very haunting (especially considering the context!):

"Someone holds me safe and warm
Horses prance through a silver storm
There's figures dancing gracefully
Across my memory!

Far away! Long ago!
Growing dim as an ember
Things my heart used to know
Things it yearns to remember

And a song, someone sings-
Once Upon a December...

 I haven't heard it in years, but it still gets a chill running up my spine.

what about the title song from "secret of Nimh"? I watched the movie a lot when I was a kid, and I still love the song. I think the song was by Jerry Goldsmith. I don't remember all the words, but it starts like this:

"dream by night,
wish by day,
love begins this way

I don't know if you've ever heard of it, but to me, it's one of the best non-disney cartoon songs :)

THANK YOU! doctorjpw!! I can listen to these soundtracks over and over again. They are all so well done. To me it's rare when you can enjoy any album front to back, but when you can, it speaks volumes about the writers and performers.

In 1979 The Muppet Movie was nominated for Best Original Song Score and Its Adaptation -or- Adaptation Score. And in 1984 The Muppets Take Manhattan was nominated for Best Original Song Score, but it was beat out by Purple Rain!!!! Prince, stinkin' Prince!!!! Sorry, just my opinion... I'm very passionate about my Muppets....

I love the music from Muppet Christmas Carol! I don't own it, but I can't wait to tape it from TV next weekend! I love it, and haven't seen it in like 10 yrs! But I do remember...

"There goes Mr. Hum-Drum, there goes Mr. Grim!
If they gave a prize for bein' mean
The winner would be him!"

"Tis' the season to be jolly and joyous!
Fa-la-la!"

"The love is gone..."

That last song I remember being so sad! I was 2 or 3 and was watching the movie, and as Scrooge started to cry, so did I! I was a very sensitive kid. I'm not like that anymore. NOw I'm an overly-sensitive teenager!

Salutations,
Sorry for bringing this boring topic up, but I just felt the need to post the best song I've heard in all my life.

Here it goes:

#4:

We're walking in the air,
we're floating in the moonlit sky,
the people down below,
are sleeping as we fly.

I'm holding very tight,
I'm riding in the midnight blue,
I'm finding I can fly,
so high above with you.

On across the world,
the villages go by like dreams,
the rivers and the hills,
the forests and the streams.

Children gaze open mouthed,
taken by surprise,
nobody down below,
believes their eyes.

We're surfing in the air,
we're swimming in a frozen sky,
we're drifting over icy,
mountains floating by.

Suddenly, swooping low,
on an ocean deep,
rousing up a mighty monster,
from his sleep.

We're walking in the air,
we're dancing in the midnight sky,
and everyone who sees us,
greets us as we fly.

Listen to the song here.

Can you guess what 30 min. film this song is from?

While not everyone will like the actual content of the South Park movie - or find it appropriate - the songs themselves are superb!

The South Park movie is a proper musical, which did upset some people who don't actually "get" South Park and think it's just about cursing and crudity, but the care that has gone into the songs and music matches any other - more "traditional" - musical. They're all wonderfully catchy too, which causes a problem when I'm listerning to them on the train, as I often want to "sing" along to the music. (I've put sing in quotes, because, basically, I can't).

I especially like the "La Resistance" melody. What should be a cacophony of music and song is written and mixed so each thread flows together perfectly. It features many reprises from the musical numbers in the film.

Check out the closing credits "Eyes of a Child" too - great lyrics!

"There's Always Tomarrow" from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

"We're on the Island of Misfit Toys" (same movie)

"My World is Beginning Today" from Santa Clause is Coming to Town, while the words themselves may not be all that powerful or whatever, the context of the song kinda is, in the way that, as Jessica has just said, "My eyes have just been open for the first time to what the world is really like"...

I too really like the song from the Secret of NIHM and I like the theme song from The Land Before Time, sung by Dianna Ross, If We Hold On Together... it is just so touching/moving...

Tangela - I love the snowman song. Good job! One of my favorite cartoon songs is from "The Year Without a Santa Clause", one of the lesser-known claymation holiday classics. I don't know what it's called, but it goes like this:
I'm Mr. White Christmas I'm Mr. Snow
I'm Mr. Icicle, I'm Mr. 10-below
Friends call me Coldmiser, whatever I touch
Turns to ice in my clutch,
I'm too much!

I'm Mr. Green Christmas I'm Mr. Sun
I'm Mr. Heat Blister, I'm Mr. 101
Friends call me Heatmiser, whatever I touch
Starts to melt in my clutch!
I'm too much!

And then the little clones come out . . . you have to see it. rotfl
