Disney's "Chanticleer"?

I was doing a little research the other day on Don Bluth's "Rock-A-Doodle", which is obviously based on the Chanticleer section from Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales". Well, my research proved that at one point, Walt Disney considered doing his own version of "Chanticleer". Apparently, Marc Davis did a few sketches for the the project that still exist, but Walt ultimately pulled the plug on it. Does anybody know why?

I think there were several, but one I recall was that after a story pitch, someone said something like "How are we gonna pull off a chicken as our hero? Nobody wants to see that".

And some people would argue that "Chicken Little" failed (I've never seen it, I can't comment).

I don't remember if I ever managed to pick it up or not, but I know Disney released a book on their version of Chanticleer in the 90's or something. I don't remember if it was a storybook using the production art, or based on the production art, or if it was just a book about the film that never was.
