Gamestop is no longer going to sell DVDs!

Well, I just came back from one of my local Gamestops to pick up TLK2 SE, and I got around to talking to the cashier about Super Nintendos, and how they no longer sell them. (While I may not be a huge video gamer anymore, I used to love (and still do!) old consoles such as NES, SNES, N64, and the Game Boy and Game Boy Color!) But, anyway he got around to saying that they are now trying to get their DVD inventory cleared, and that they will soon no longer be selling DVD's! This actually makes me REALLY sad, because GameStop and EBGames are my #1 source to get OOP DVD's for cheap! (Heck, that's the only way I could have gotten the Fantasia Anthology for $34.99!!)

This means I'm going to have to get any OOP DVD's from Gamestop ASAP. (As in, find ones to transfer!) This includes a few of the Treasures sets, The Jungle Book (for the aspect ratio!!), and possibly Pinocchio (though I am hoping that my VHS will last until next March!).

What are your thoughts on this? I'm honestly hoping that this was just one Gamestop that's clearing their DVD's, and not all of them. :(

Does this include UK gamestops? Well to be honest, I don't get Disney DVDs from Gamestop anyway - but I at least like having the option of buying one there.

Good riddance. (and this coming from one of their most loyal buyers)

As much as I loved their selling prices, their buyback prices sucked majorly and it was always needles-in-a-haystack for me to find the good stuff from the 95% of the dreck they'd always have. Plus, even if they did have a title, the case would either be abysmal or the disc would be. I actually passed on a decent-looking Jungle Book LI back in September/October because it was in a rental case with really bad (like, faded and wrinkled) cover insert, though the disc was passable and playable).

I'll be forever grateful for the many gems I did get from them, but over the years it's gotten quite tedious for me to bother searching the stores, and I'm not committed enough to DVDs to do store-to-store transfers like brotherbear! :P

So while I'm a bit upset, a part of me is also relieved. Now it's one less store for me to do DVD scavenging in.

my gamestop (used to be a Software, ETC) at the local mall has never had DVDs as far as I know. And I'm in the USA.

This stinks for those who buy DVDs from them.

I suspect that this may just be your store. I know here in the Atlanta area that GameStop is opening up several movie-only stores entitled MovieStop, most next door to GameStops. There's also nothing mentioned at all on Gamestop's website about phasing out DVDs.

Still, Escapay is right. It does take quite a bit of work to sift through their inventory to find the hidden gems. My most recent find at my local MovieStop/GameStop was the Robin Hood Gold Collection, which really isn't all that hard to find (I prefer the GC 1.33:1 ratio over the 1.75:1 ratio of the Most Wanted Edition, as I think it preserves more of the artwork).

i haven't bought DVD's from them since i get cheap movie's from Target. i'm lucky if i find a movie there that cost's only $5-10 even when they aren't on sale. it's thanks to them that i got Aladdin cheaply. and i say good riddence to movies at Gamestop since it's called Gamestop for a reason. but mine says Gamestop and movies too so it's acceptable there.

brotherbear, I wonder if this is what your GameStop is doing, and they just didn't give you all the details...?

I've checked around 3 different gamestops and eb games, and I've never found a single oop disney dvd :? So I don't think this will effect me much..

Maybe they will put their dvd's on sale to clean out the selection. I always buy my oop dvds on amazon.

I am a bit mixed on this. I did find some good dvds at Gamestop once in a blue moon, but I am glad they are doing away with the dvds. Some of the dvds I bought from Gamestop had a smoke smell on them
(The Lion King).

That really sucks... Oh well. Luckily I've been able to find everything I wanted and no longer need to rely on gamestop/eb games.

They just closed my favorite Game Stop... First they fired the clerk who I hung out with, talking about movies, games, horror movies, anime, etc., then they close the whole store! :x

They had two stores, one in the mall and one right outside. The one outside is where all the gamers hung out, talking about games, and so on. It was about 3 times as big, and had plenty of room for DVDs, games, or anything else they sold.

It sucks having to find a parking place for the mall, then walk all the way to the store, and then not be able to talk games or movies with anyone there.

You won't find it mentioned on GameStop's website. It was a Corporate decision. I know this because I work for GameStop--I've been a mgr-in-training for about 6 weeks now, and they are indeed phasing DVDs out of stores. Most mall stores have transfered their DVD titles to non-mall locations due to mall stores being generally smaller. They needed to free up the floor space for other product.

Also, there was far too much abuse when they offered cash for DVDs, and even with trade-ins only many stores were flooded with stolen DVDs because stores like Walmart have seriously lax security. Trust me on this--I've worked with three different GameStop stores, and sadly it's very true.

I had a customer Wednesday bring a game in--still sealed in the package--demanding a full cash refund without a receipt, swearing to me that his mother had bought it from GameStop, when there very clearly was a Wal-Mart price sticker on the front of the package.

And it's mostly because petty thieves like these have abused trade-in/cash back policy with GameStop that they are phasing DVDs out. Besides, GameStop does 3x (and more) volume in trades on games than they ever did on DVDs, so the decision wasn't surprising to me.

Furthermore, GameStop does not own MovieStop. It is a spin-off company but it's a wholly separate corporate entity, and only affiliated with GameStop as a "brother company", as they put it. Employee discounts are reciprocated between the two, and occassionally we have employees who transfer from GS to MS, and vice versa. GameStop has some 4500+ stores, while MovieStop's got less than 100 last I heard.

I do not know how soon it will be before GameStop completely phases out carrying DVDs. Many stores like the one I'm currently at still have a lot of product, and we still accept trades. But other stores in the same district have stopped accepting trades per Corporate and have transfered their DVD inventories to other stores.
roswellian wrote:Maybe they will put their dvd's on sale to clean out the selection.
They already have. Since February GameStop stores that do carry DVDs are currently offering "Buy Two, Get One Free" promos, and a select number of stores with excess inventory are actually offering "Buy Two, Get TWO Free".

Doctor, you said you live in Atlanta-- you should visit the store in Winder. They are one of the stores offering B2/G2 Free, and I heard from the store's mgr earlier in the week that they had "a lot of Disney titles in stock" (his own words). I'm headed over there Friday to see what they have since that store is just a couple miles from the house my wife and I will be moving into next month.

I trained at the Buford store next to the Mall of Georgia, and was recently transfered to the Collins Hill store in Lawrenceville since they're understaffed and without a mgr. If you're in the area, stop by and say hello. We've got a ton of DVDs left, although we're only doing the B2/G1 Free promo. And I helped alphabetize the whole DVD section last week, and I'd guess that there are a couple dozen different Disney/Touchstone titles available. But they're going fast. Yesterday, I rang up a customer who was thrilled to get preowned copies of "Finding Nemo", "Lady & The Tramp", and "The Incredibles" all for a total of $20+ tax.
brotherbear wrote:This actually makes me REALLY sad, because GameStop and EBGames are my #1 source to get OOP DVD's for cheap!
Not to sound cliché, but I feel your pain. I buy pre-owned 90% of the time because I hate paying retail prices (and Disney's prices are usually higher even than standard retail prices).

I was disappointed to learn about this when I first started working at GameStop, because I had bought a lot of used DVDs there as well and I was looking forward to using my employee discount.

You might check to see if there is a CD Warehouse in your area (see cdwarehouse.com for locations). About 40% of their "used" inventory is DVDs, and there are three locations within 20 minutes of where I live. I've probably bought 70% of my pre-owned Disney DVDs there, and they're nearly always in great condition--even with the original slipcovers and inserts, and most of them for 50% off and more from the original list price.

I go to Moviestop every week and if you're able to find one in your area you will love this SO much better than Gamestop. Every Saturday they run a promotion for kids DVDs, "Buy 2 Used Kids DVDs Get One Free". Well they classify Disney movies as kids movies (BTW my Moviestop has an entire Disney SECTION. They have Horror, Action, etc....) so you can get a lot of PE and what not really cheap.

I started my Disney collection last year on Dec. 24th when I went in Moviestop to get the Jurrasic Park 3-pack. I got to the counter and casually/jokingly asked if they had Snow White and they looked behind the conter and had a slightly used Snow White with ALL INSERTS for $19.99. I immediately bought it but I also got a used copy of Beauty and the Beast there for $19.99 (with all inserts) about 3 weeks later. I got Sleeping Beauty, Lion King, Pinocchio, Hunchback of Notre Dame for $5, Sword in the Stone for $5, etc.....BTW, since I bought my Snow White I've seen it in the store at least 2 other times for the same price but they get scooped up quick. Used PEs go for $15.99 (Lady and the Tramp, Cinderella)-$19.99 (Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King). They also have some NEW copies of PEs like Lion King.

You will LOVE Moviestop if they move into your area. I live in Orlando and I go to the one on Kirkman Road. If anyone ever comes to Orlando and goes to Universal Studios, Moviestop is on the same street just about 5 to 6 lights down.

I never even noticed that they sold DVD's at Ebgames or Gamestop! (Unless they don't over here at the outlet mall)... :?
