Do you think Toy Story would have been successful had it been animated in traditional 2D?

I think the story was strong enough, but the 3D animation brought something else to the film.

What are your opinions?

Um..Yeah I think it would have been equally as good of a movie as in success. It came out the time with Pocahontas right? And both made bucketloads correct? So I think it still would have been successful.

I think it did great with CG animation. I cant picture it any other way.

Im not a big fan of CGI animation. I prefer 2D anyday. But I don't mind it. I like it. I still dont consider CGI classic so I think we should wait at least 20 more years before we decide to call that medium *classic.

But anyways Toy Story is amazing in all of its CGI glory.

I think it would have still been an amazing film, but I'm not sure it would have made as much at the box office. I know several people that only went to see it because it was CGI.

That's actually a pretty good question.

I think it still would have done well, but I don't think it would be considered quite as ground-breaking as we all consider it today. At the time, CGI animation (at least at this quality) was still relatively new, which I believe is why so many people were attracted to this film.

The plot is great, and I'm sure it would have done well, but I think the fact that the animation brought something unique to the film also contributed to its success.

I don't think it would have done as well either. It may have done well but not what it did. A lot of the appeal was being in CGI and that the toys looked real. I think better animated films have been made than TS before and after but it is what it is because it was the first in CGI. TS2 is a way better film in my opinion.

i dont think it wouldve done well. storywise yea the plot is strong. but it'd be nothing more just like the brave little toaster if done in 2d. object characters have been done many times in 2d its become usual.

No! Absolutely not! It would not be good in 2d. Sure, the script would be nice, but everything would look sorta flat in 2d.

I think the story would have been just as entertaining in 2D or any other animation medium, provided everything else was the same (script, voices, music, etc...). However, would it have had the same kind of success? I don't think so. Picture it this way: A relatively unknown animation studio with a cartoon about toys being alive that is distributed by Disney during their golden age. Do you think that draws a huge crowd? I think it probably would have done well, but nowhere near how well it did as a CG film. Here's the way it really was: Disney presents The first ever entirely CG animated film created by Pixar. Which one do you want to see more in 1994? The 2D version or the CG version? I agree with Prince Ali that it deffinatley wouldn't have been groundbreaking if it hadn't been in CG.
