Hey I was wondering if anyone knows where i could download/buy an instrumental-only soundtrack? Or if it's possible to extract the "voice" channel from the DVD audio and make it an audio file? I'd love to be able to just sit and work and listen to The Little Mermaid or Hunchback score...is there hope?!

I"ve wondered the same thing. Years ago I had a 5 channel stero system that seperated the voice and music and I always wondered if I could extract the vocal too but on every computer program I've ever used it seems to be impossible.
Someone prove me wrong. PLEASE!

It depends on how the audio on the DVDs was mastered. Either way, though, you'd need something to extract the audio streams from the DVD, and an editor capable of manipulating AC-3 encoded audio. Even then, it would only really work if the movie's score existed in an unmolested form (eg. free of dialogue) in 1 or 2 of the 6 channels usually present in an AC-3 file.
Adobe Audition can edit and remix AC-3 encoded audio, although I don't think it's able to rip audio from an existing DVD... and certainly not from a copy-protected commercial DVD. There are programs which can extract a DVD's audio to an MP3 file, but it will downsample it into a stereo file, integrating the 6 channels into 2 (eliminating the isolated score, if it existed in the first place).

Step 1:
Rip the audio track from a DVD using freeware called SmartRipper.
Step 2:
Convert the ac3 file to 5.1 wav (6 channel PCM) using freeware called
ac3tool
Step 3: Bring it into a video editing program such as pro tools, Garage Band or Adobe Premiere as 6 mono channel tracks. Then mix the channels you want in.
Step 4: Get really frustrated when it takes a long time.

The scores for Little Mermaid and Hunchback are readily available on CD.
That would probably be your safest bet.

Maybe he's refering to tracks not on the CD's? Disney never releases full scores on their newer films. It's a shame that SHrek gets score releases and Lilo and Stitch didn't.

Yah i'm looking for a complete score without vocals. There's a lot of hidden gold in the soundtracks to those movies

I'll let you guys know if i find something. Im working on the AC3 audio files from the dvd and trying to change the layering

I have found success, after quite a hiatus, in pulling the underscores from DVD's without vocals. I created a blog where I'll be posting the music, and the process of doing this, as well as some CD artwork I've made for these gems. Drop by! You'll probably be the first visitor ahah

OK, a bit easier way...
To extract vocals, you use only the center channel.
To remove vocals, you use everything BUT the center channel.
Easiest way to do this is to make six waves (DVD Decrypter can apparently do it... I use PgcDemux and then BeSweet), open them in Audacity, and delete the ones you don't want.
This doesn't work 100%, as the center channel usually has SOME music... but it makes some nice results.
rb_canadian181, any chance you can use your more sophisticated way to make instrumentals of the hit songs from some of the movies? I made a homemade instrumental of stuff like Arabian Nights, but they kinda suck since they still have sound effects (might not be possible to remove), and some music is deleted with the center channel. (None of this is possible with the Enhanced Home Theater Mix, that blends everything...)
I'd kill for an instrumental of I'll Make a Man Out of You

For some reason that one's hard to make with the center channel method.

Yeah, I downloaded you're first pulled score (for
TLM) and I was wondering if there's any particular reason tracks 1-13 were missing? Is it because most of them are already on the released soundtrack? Because I was hoping to get "PoYW," its reprise and "UtS" without lyrics. In any case, at least you have the best side of the score. Thanks.
The only other film I can think of that I would really like to have is
Mulan--as the music from her decision to enlist scene is missing from the soundtrack (which completely sucks, as it was the most powerful moment of the film).

Hey, what's wrong with pretending to be a ninja?
That karaoke version is not the original. Most of those "Disney karaoke" CDs, as well as anything CD+G is re-recorded to sound LIKE, but not exactly the same as, the original. Hence the term "instrumental"... to show that I'm not talking about CD+G versions.

For some reason those files were excluded when I made the zip... I'm trying to figure out what's going wrong :S

Our methods are actually quite similar! I guess its just difficult to have to weed through over an hour and 20 minutes of a channel that is mainly speaking, especially because it will sound choppy when I get to a part that has to go back to only the surround speakers. I'm sure with experience my tactics will improve!

I have the my first version of the Beauty and the Beast audio score on my blog now. Some updates will be happening soon with that, but it seemed like there was a lot of demand for the score to that movie.
Enjoy!

Great job!
Is it just me, or does it seem bassheavy though?
Any chance you could make an instrumental of I'll Make a Man Out of You? That song has a sweet background music and I really want it... the instrumental I made still has the sfx (the "Be a man" chorus, and all the random noises people make during it), and some music is lost in the center channel.
Can you make acapellas too? The problem with the center channel is it still has some music behind it... and there's not much you can do to only a mono track...

Thank you for your great work!
But there is still a problem, I think.
Let's take 02 Belle.mp3 of Beauty and the Beast for example. We can still hear "I need, six eggs" a little, though not clear. I don't know why, but is it because only sounds of LOW FREQUENCY are excluded?

The mixing doesnt have anything to do with frequency, the music I use comes from the rear speakers in the 6.1 audio setup. Usually the front/centre speaker has the dialogue/singing, sides are sound effects and rear is score. Hopefully I'll be able to get a better sample from BATB when the blu-ray is released.
I just uploaded my Aladdin material to the blog,
http://audiofilmscores.blogspot.com/ and I've been updating the other 2 scores, so I'll upload those updates in the near future too.
Enjoy!

To the people who are constantly complaining about the imperfections in these audio files...How about instead of picking every little thing apart
You thank rb_canadian181 for his hard work and effort. He doesn't have to do this for everyone...But he is... so if it's not good enough for you, keep it to yourself and make a better one on your own ?
To rb_canadian181... Thank you for your hard work and for posting these for everyone ! it's much appreciated ![/b]
