If you've looked on the front page and seen the above link, you'll know that it looks like Disney is going to possibly produce another remake of an animated classic...well, this time, part of one. The Sorcerer's Apprentice is being developed for Walt Disney Pictures by Nicholas Cage and Todd Garner. Personally, I find this interesting, and wonder what they'll do to make it feature-length. I seem to remember reading as a kid an adaptation in a series of fairy-tale books, and it was expanded, with the Apprentice being kidnapped at the beginning from his home at the beginning there being a prescence of a climax in which the Apprentice having to face the Sorcerer at the end in a show-down.

Just like what I wrote in the "Aladdin" thread, I don't feel a need to make live-action versions of Disney animated films. The Mickey Mouse version is so beloved, I can't see this being anywhere near as good as the segment from "Fantasia". They should use their money on brand-new projects.

Once again, guys, I really don't think this is going to be a "live-action version" of the Disney short. There may be a few nods to the Fantasia segemnt, but I'd think that'd be it. It's the same as "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", the latter isn't a remake, it's a second film version of the source material.

C'mon, they can remake The Sorcerer's Apprentice into a live-action film but not make Peoplemover: The Movie?

What's the world coming too?

I like the sound of this, it sounds cool. I wouldn't really mind because I wouldn't compare it with the original Fantasia segment. The Fantasia segment was mind-blowing, and this probably won't be, so its just easier to not compare them. As SpringHeelJack said it's like the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory thing. It's not a remake, it's just a different version of it.

I think this is any awful idea. I don’t think that ether the Aladdin or The Sorcerer's Apprentice live action films should be made. Aladdin may be good if done right but there are so many versions of the story that it would be very easy to screw it up. 101 Dalmatians & the Jungle Book were the only films that it worked with the live action remake thing and both are widely debated on anyway.

I think this is a closer comparison than using the two "Chocolate Factory"s. Both Charlie movies were live action movies based on a book and followed the original story PRETTY closely with MINOR changes here and there. The Jungle Book, from what I remember, featured extremely different elements from the original animated version, and removed the musical elements. So maybe that's more like what Aladdin and Sorcerer's will be?

I have more faith in an interesting new interpretation of Sorcerer's, since the short is classic and wonderful, but would obviously have to be drastically and completely changed to work.

Yes, exactly. Thank you for pointing that out, as I'm sure there will be much fist-shaking otherwise. :) it must be stressed that this is not a 'remake' per se, as it was based on "takes its inspiration from the poem by Goethe in which an old sorcerer leaves his workshop, in the hands of his apprentice, who's not yet fully trained in magic". It also happened to be the visual basis for the story in Fantasia (and Fantasia 2000)!Saying it is a remake is akin to calling Snow White a remake - simply because it was based on an old legend that had been retold in many forms before and since.

This is actually quite promising. I thought Cage's last collaboration with Disney - National Treasure - was pure gold (pardon the pun), and I look forward to seeing what visual treats this one has in store.

I feel that Disney's been there, done that, for both this and "Aladdin". They've already told this story- come and tell us a story you haven't told us yet. "Snow White" had never been made by Disney before the 1937 movie, yet "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" has been made before. How would you all feel if Disney decided to make a live-action version of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs"? It just seems unneccesary to me, that's all. :(

A large part of what Disney does is take existing stories and re-tell them in their own particular fashion.

Snow White - Countless print retellings before and after Disney; at least 5 silent versions that I'm aware of. Disney found a way of bringing a new twist to it.

Cinderella - Countless versions made before and since. Disney have even twisted this themselves a few times, especially with the Princess Diaries format.

Sleeping Beauty - Like the other fairy tales, it is centuries old - and the 1902 film version is one of the earliest pieces of cinema. However, few could deny that Disney's version brought a visual feast to the table. Old story, Disney brought something new.

Beauty and The Beast...ah, you get the idea.

I'm confident that good or bad, Disney will come up with a new concept. The fact that it is planned as live action is indicative of that.

I think there is a lot of potential with a live action adaptation of the Sorcerers Apprentice.
and look forward to seeing what the creators of this interpriation have in mind.
obviously this is not a remake of the Mickey Mouse fantasia sequence but something entirely different.

I understand what you're saying, Loomis. My point is that Disney has already told its version of the story. There are so many stories, both exisiting and original, that Disney could tell. I'm curious as to what you feel about re-makes (such as "Freaky Friday" or "The Parent Trap"), Loomis. Although I enjoy Lindsay Lohan, I don't think that the re-makes were necessary, either.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Live Action)

So apparently it's a good idea to make this a live action film...

starring Nicolas Cage as the sorcerer...

First of all, please forgive me any nicolas cage fans, but i really think that nicolas cage is one of the worst actors i've seen on film. I just really don't like his acting style. Then to put him as the sorcerer on this live action film? ew

This also raises some other questions though, are they doing this in the fasion of a action/medieval film, or is there going to be a CGI Mickey running around thoughout the film?

Agreed! Though I love the National Treasure movies, I think Nicolas Cage is a terrible actor, and those are a few of the only movies I can stomach watching him in.

I just read on the first page of UltimateDisney that among the Disney movies that were announced the other day (Pirates 4, Lone Ranger, National Treasure 3, etc), that Disney is working on a live-action Sorcerer's Apprentice.

Are they trying to jump on the Harry Potter bandwagon again? (i.e. Narnia)

Anbody now when this one is slated to be released?

Escapay, your memory of topics long lost never ceases to amaze me.

Sorry for double dipping on topics, i thought the announcement was too new for me to even consider searching for a pre-existing one

Escapay's memory in general never ceases to amaze me. Why he's not used it to count cards at casinos is one of life's greatest mysteries.
