I'm happy as long as The Little Matchgirl gets the Oscar.

The only one of those films I didn't see was Apocalypto and I have to say I'm not surprised by any of the nominations this year.

Many of you may be wondering what films Cars is up against for best animated feature. They are Happy Feet and Monster House. I didn't see Happy Feet, but Cars deffinatley shines over Monster House and I've heard mixed things about Happy Feet, so I'm assuming Cars will take that one home.

Don't forget "The Little Matchgirl", the Disney-animated short that is nominated. I'll merge this with the existing Oscar thread in Off-Topic, since the discussions to be sparked are probably very similar.

I'm glad to see something good happen for Poseidon. I've always felt that that movie was worth more than people gave it credit for. I enjoyed it.

And I really hope Pirates and Cars get the awards they deserve - Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy too.

I'm a little upset that "Dreamgirls" got snubbed from the Best Picture category. Granted it was nominated for many other awards, I definately thought it was worthy of at LEAST a Best Pic nomination. However, other than that I can't complain much - I'm pretty pleased with the nominations.

Oh, that makes me so mad. Dreamgirls completely deserved a Best Picture nomination.

Perhaps the Academy has grown tired of music bio-pics (even ones "loosely" based on fact). That said, I was surprised to see it missing as well.

No huge surprises though. Di Caprio's nomination for Blood Diamond rather than The Departed is interesting, although I am yet to see Blood Diamond as the trailers made it look...well...crap. Other reports seem to indicate otherwise.

If Marty doesn't win the best directing nod this year, I will never watch another Academy Awards ceremony in 2007.

This is just crazy. The Painted Veil didn't get one nomination, not even score, which it won at the Globes. This shows that the Academy members didn't even bother to see this highly rated film. Jack Nicholson was forgotten for the Departed, and Leo got his for Blood Diamond. Where is Volver for foreign language?

Then you shouldn't be happy. Because if you actually follow this stuff, you should know what I mean when I say "Destino" and "Lorenzo".

I'm pretty sure the same thing will happen like in 2002. They'll give the "Best Animated Film" Oscar to "Happy Feet", but since the academy loves Pixar so much, they'll give Cars "Best Song" as well as Lifted "Best Short". If Happy Feet was nominated for "Best Song" then Cars would at least have a chance, but since Cars shockingly picked up a nomination, I'm really sure my theory is correct.

Overall, I must say, I'm MUCH happier with these nominations than last year's. Unlike last year, none of the Best Picture nominations make me yell "NO! NO! NO!"(although, I don't know much about a couple of the ones nominated this year). The best "Best Picture" nominations in a very long time imo. I'm rooting for "Little Miss Sunshine", as it's the only one I've seen, but liked very much.

Pirates should've gotten Make-Up and Costumes too I felt, but hey, 4 ain't bad, so I'm pretty happy there.

Shut offs of many of my favorite movies of the year, most of which I'm not too disappointed as they were expected, but the biggest one that was most offensive and shocking being Casino Royal!!!

C'mon, I wasn't expecting "Best Picture" or "Best Actor" or "Best Adapted Screenplay"(although I feel those would be very deserving) but ZERO nominations?!? Not even something small like "Cinematography" or "Sound Mixing" like what they did for Batman Begins? Biggest and most surprising shock. I'll live with it though, it's not like the academy was ever an indication of quality.

Actually, that is a major oversight. Pedro Almodovar has had an OK run as far as the Oscars are concerned (he won for Best Screenplay a few years back for the wonderful Talk to Her), but he certainly isn't for all tastes. Personally, I was glad to see Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth get nominated, although if there was any justice in the world it would have been in the Best Picture category!

Marty makes good films. He doesn't need a gold-plated bald naked man to feel appreciated by his peers. Besides, the lack of one does allow him to belong to an elite club of directors who were nominated but never won (Kurosawa, Bergman, Leone, Kubrick, Cassavetes, Welles, Hitchcock, Altman, Lynch...)

I can't say Dreamgirls getting snubbed on Best Picture particularly irked me... personally I can't stand 99% of musicals. I'm pleased that Little Miss Sunshine recieved a number of nominations, including Best Picture. I hope it ends up winning a few. Abigail Breslin must be one of the youngest actresses to ever be nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

I wish we would actually see "Lifted" before the awards, though... it's kind of irritating. Obviously somebody's seen it, if it was nominated.

I'm pretty happy about these noms. Good to see that Abigail Breslin was nominated, as I saw Little Miss Sunshine this week, and I loved her performance. Sucks that Dreamgirls was snubbed for best picture; saw it yesterday and loved it, especially the Jennifer Hudson showstopper "And I'm Telling You I Ain't Leaving". Also sucks that The Painted Veil, and The Fountain were both snubbed even for the little score awards.
