Tragedy Strikes Me

*Warning* This story is not for the faint of heart.
11:30pm mountain time last night I was trying to go to sleep until I heard my dad rip open the door down stairs and started screaming. He was yelling "get the f*&# out of here!" "Get the f&@* out of here or I'll hit them in the face with a baseball bat!" After I heard that I thought my dad was being attacked so I raced out of my bed, got my gun and headed down stairs. When I meet with my dad I asked "is everything all right?" He shouted "no," as he stared at the ground. I took a closer look and there was my cat Max laying on the ground. He was attacked by two dogs who left blood and saliva all over him. They bit him in the abdomen and left many puncture wounds. Max was grunting, his tongue was hanging out and every time he would try to get up he would fall back to the ground again. It was the most horrible sight I've ever seen in my entire life. The guy who was walking the dogs didn't have a leash on either one of them and he practically let them attack our cat. He came up to me and my dad nonchalontly and said "geee, I'm sorry, is there anything I can do to help." I was just so pissed off at that I yelled "you helped out plenty, now get the hell out of here!"
I knew he wasn't going to make it but I though we should at least try to get him to a hospital, I didn't want my buddy to die. So my dad and I got a towel and gently lifted him up off the ground and into my car. We go back inside where I told my mom to get dressed and go to the hospital with me because she was the only one who knew where it was at. Mean while as she was getting dressed I headed back out side to check on Max but when I opened the trunk he was staring into space, his tongue was hanging out, he wasn't breathing... he was dead.
Ever since then and writing this post I haven't been able to stop weeping. Actually every time I think he'll never be around to beg for table scrapes, lay on my lap and purr, play with his cat nip toys brings tears to my eyes. My mom and I are going to take him to the vet to have him cremated today. You all can bet that I'm not going to stand for this; justice will be done but nothing will ever bring him back.
Max was a part of my family, he was like a little brother to me and now I'll never see him again.
Goodbye buddy, I will miss you dearly.
Max

You should have shot the guy on principle.

One of the reasons I find this so disturbing is that, they also warn that the same big dogs that attack cats will attack dogs about the same size as those cats, of which there are several breeds of dogs as small as a cat. So it's not just a typical case of dogs and cats don't get along, it's that these freaking dogs are too big, too monsterous, and too programmed into their instinctive behavior to be properly domesticated. So basically, if a dog does something wrong, the owner just don't know what to do. And of course, as a pet owner, I can promise you that unruly pets can create a great deal of apathy in the owner. But some people are too apathetic to own dogs anyway. Did you know that a lot of owners will buy big, potentially unruly, angry dogs, to compensate for feelings of inadequateness. So they're not looking for sweet, attentive, loving companions anyway. Which dogs are supposed to be. And I've encountered a surprising amount of cat haters in my life. I wouldn't be surprised if one of them were to let their dog or dogs attack one. I guess it's all about where you come from, because every neighborhood I've ever lived in are always much more nervous and hateful of dogs. Even small ones can provoke fear in some unbelievably high-strung and whacked out people.
Well, I have always said, "some people should be put to sleep." (UHF)
I'm very sorry this happened to you. I've had a lot of animal tragedies in my youth. A lot of very disturbing things that had happened to me / my animals, at a very young age. I definitely know how hard this can be, how scary, how infuriating, and how helpless it can make a person feel.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I can't even imagine what that must have been like to see your pet lying there so helpless. I hope you and your family are able to come at peace with this situation soon. You will be in my prayers.

That's terrible, Zoltack. I'm really sorry to hear that. I'm pretty sure that you can take some sort of action against those dogs and their owner, which you definitely should do.

When you wrote out the unbearable details of what happened to Max, I actually saw it in my head, and that could easily be the most horrible thing I ever imagined. Words can't express how terrible this attack was. And the guy acted as if it wasn't really terrible at all. He may have hated cats and didn't care, but it could also have been that he didn't know how to stop the dogs and was in complete shock. Maybe he honestly didn't know what to do. Still, those dogs can't be let off for doing such an inconcievably evil thing.
I'm sorry for you and Max beyond words. It's really not about you, it's about poor Max. But at least you let us know what happened to him. People need to be educated in the bad things that can happen, they can't be blind to things like this. Thanks for letting us know.
At least now Max is in a place where he is not mangled and in serious pain. A much better place.

The poor kitty! I'm so sorry Zoltack. It stinks to lose a pet. Especially one that you loved very much. Wasn't that guy breaking some laws by not walking his dogs on a leash?

It always saddens me to see these things happen between animals despite it being "in their nature". I have a dog and I'm glad that apart from the occassional chasing around he can't take an animal life. It's stories like these which make me happy with him not being a killer.
I'm very sorry for your loss. I hope your cat is in a better place now.

If I would of shot the guy the punishment wouldn't have fit the crime. Now I could of shot the dogs but because I live in a crowded neighborhood that wouldn't of been the safest thing to do. Besides, I was all out of bullets. Don't worry though he'll get what's coming to him. I hope the APC (animal protection and control) confiscated his dogs because someone that irresponsible should not be allowed to own pets. Because of his acts of irresponsible behavior and not knowing how to handle pets, my poor Max paid the ultimate price. Saying you don't know what to do if your dog is attacking either a human or another animal is bull shit! You damn well know what to do and that is get you freaking dogs to stop attacking! PERIOD!!! There's no excuse, and no reason why this had to happen.

We will be pressing charges but not only will our neighbor be fined for not having his dogs on a leash we will be fined as well for letting Max run loose. I don't know how having a leash on Max would of prevented this lose but certainly having a leash on those mutts would have. It also cost $45 for Max's body to be removed and I can assure you all I will pay our neighbor a visit, give him the copy of the check and tell him "not only do you owe my family an apology you also owe us $45 to remove our cat." After that the law will decide what to do with him and his mongrels. Now, I don't want the dogs to be destroyed, I just want them taking away so nothing like this happens again in our neighborhood.

Yes, but because Max wasn't on a leash we were breaking that law too which is why if we press charges (and we will) we will be fined.

Oh God I'm so sorry Zoltack! My condolences to you and your family.
I totally just like, cried.
EDIT:
I cannot believe this. I don't even
know you or this Max but that picture just makes me start to bawl when I picture what happened to him, and how he tried to stand back up as you said.
I can't even fathom what I would've done in your situation.

Oh.....my.....god! I'm so sorry about your loss of your cat. Zoltack, I know you love him very much but as times goes on he'll always love you no matter what. As for those dogs, I hope the owner will get charged for animal cruelty to another animal. Gosh, this is soo sad.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Zoltack. Usually it's a law that all dogs are to be on leashes, check your town hall, and ask them. If so, you could take these people to court because of this. Either way, I hope justice is served. Let us know how it turns out.
