Article on Disney's 3D Projects

I found this link (further down) courtesy of the Animated News website (www.animated-news.com), but...it looks like we'll be seeing 3D through 2006/07, at least; they haven't greenlit any traditional features, though I know they signed on the team from Brother Bear (which could very likely be a 2D feature; I really hope so). As far as I can recall, here are their upcoming projects...not including Pixar's films:

Home on the Range (2004)
Chicken Little (2005)
My Peoples (I'm sure it's going by a different title now; hasn't it had five or so? A Few Good Ghosts, it it? :) )
Fantasia 2006
Rapunzel: Unbraided
An American Dog

I think these will all be good. Especially the one Chris Sanders is working on (as the article states). I loved Lilo & Stitch. But that also had a lot to do with the animation, so...as well as the characters and story.

Regardless, though, I'm of the optimistic opinion that it will all balance out in the end. Traditional animation will be back, eventually. And Brother Bear looks to be on its way to 100 million, so that's good. I have to hope, though, that Disney will stick with the 2D medium. I trust that they will, even if there's a gap before it gets rolling again. :)

"Walt Disney has greenlit two new 3D projects from LILO & STITCH creator Chris Sanders and veteran animator Glen Keane. Carolyn Soper, vp of production for Walt Disney Feature Animation, briefly discussed the projects at a Producer’s Guild function on Nov. 6, 2003.

"Soper said that Sanders is writing the script for AN AMERICAN DOG. She added that Keane’s project RAPUNZEL UNBRAIDED was just recently given the go-ahead. The company had asked Keane to develop a 3D fairy tale, which at first the 2D vet was reluctant to do. However, Keane’s willingness to try the new medium by approaching it from a different perspective, allowed Keane and the other 3D artists to share ideas and learn new angles to approach the new project. The rest is history. Plots for the two features have not been released.

"Disney is in production on its first 3D feature CHICKEN LITTLE, which is scheduled to reach theaters in 2005. Mark Dindal (EMPEROR’S NEW GROOVE, CATS DON’T DANCE) is serving as director. Following up that project will be MULAN director Barry Cook’s 3D feature MY PEOPLES, a bluegrass musical that centers on a folk art puppet version of Abraham Lincoln made out of an old push broom."

I agree, too!

But I'm hoping they're good, anyway, trying to be optimistic. But they can never replace 2D... :(

Has anyone seen pictures of these new 3d movies from Disney? Luke, maybe you have some early pictures of them? I think that Disney won't be comparable to Pixar. Pixar specializes in 3d animation and this is all new for Disney. I'm not sure about that whole Disney 3d thing.

Does anyone else think the movie "An American Dog" sounds really lame?! Anyway, I'm also interested in Disney being all computer, though I think it will look something like Peter Pan on the Special Edition DVD cover (he's CG, I think...)

Oh... just had a really bad thought, what if they CG movies have painted covers since the 2D films have 3D covers?

Just kidding.

Disney Orlando is doing A Few Good Ghosts, which surprised me. And it's half 2D/half 3D, and I've liked all their work so far, so I'm looking forward to that one the most right now. (Aside from Fantasia 2006, of course.)
