I have noticed the recent (ongoing) discussion of bandwith. Lack of, costly, etc...

Do all the really old topics have an effect on this?

Sorry for being technically uninformed on this but was thinking that if it does, do we really need to keep topics going back 3 1/2 years (April 2003)?

Probably most of what, especially in the "Off Topic" section, is, say older than 2 years, has to be of little use. I can't see very many people searching, or going back, to stuff that old. If there is something back there that may interest people, they are going to ask again anyway as they will figure the replies from back then are probably not relevant anymore or the info has changed.

So why not just delete the really old, no longer valid or obsolete stuff to free up space.

Just a suggestion.

Yes, all former information is important. Members should search for past topics. You don't know how many times I've seen lists of the same thing appearing. If some members would just search, the bandwith would not have to worry. Some members, like myself, like to go back and look at older threads. We like to read, sometimes reviews of DVDs, and other information that can be found. I am all in favor for keeping older topics.

I think it's important to keep all information and posts. Sometimes it's cool to see older threads brought back to the surface. However, if there is one thing I know about bandwidth it is that search functions use more bandwidth than almost any other feature. That's why most free boards actually turn off the onboard search features and opt for a Google type script to replace them. So, if administrators are concerned about bandwidth that's the place to really look.

Old posts dont take up bandwith, new ones do. All the old posts take up storage not bandwith. And if Luke has enough he should keep them.

I know Luke has done a couple of cleanup projects over the year especially in Polls and Games.

There are some topics that are in need of replying. Pretty soon, a lot of the topics will be forgotten if they are not kept up. So it is not a good idea to delete old topics unless it's really necessary.

I think that if there's enough storage/bandwith for the older posts/threads, then they should stay. I often go into the archives of the animation sites I go on, to refresh my memory or to relive the good old days.
