About the new SE Disney 2 Disc DVDs

I am a huge movie buff and DVD collector. My collection mostly consists of horror. But recently I have refrained from buying anymore horror until I have completed my Disney collection.
I have been buying Disney's Gold Collection and Platinum Discs.
I just so happened to find Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Pinocchio last week at a bookstore. I felt pretty lucky because both are quite hard to find nowadays.
And yesterday I happened to find one more Peter Pan left at a movie and music store.
I still have to get the rest of the Gold Editions and the Platinum DVD's.
However, after buying Finding Nemo, I went to the Bonus Features and then went to Sneak Peeks where I found a trailer advertising Disney's upcoming 2 disc special editions for Mary Poppins, Alice in Wonderland, Pocahontas, and Lilo and Stitch.
Now I wonder.... does this mean every Gold Edition Disney DVD will be rereleased in a 2 disc special edition? If so, fine. That's cool. The more the merrier. But is it just going to be 3 released every year or will there be more? Also does anyone know if there are plans to rerelease Lady and the Tramp or other really hard to find titles? Are they planning on rereleasing other not so popular (but no less captivating) titles that are still in print such as The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad and Fun and Fancy Free? I'll admit, if the release date isn't until 2010 or even 2005 for that matter, I'll probably still get the older versions if I can.
As for Alice, Pocahontas, and Lilo and Stitch; I'll just wait because they are coming out next year.
So does anyone have any information on these new 2 Disc Disney DVD's and what we might see in the future? I'm sure your guesses are as good as mine...

Hi !
As far as I know, not all the Gold Collections will be rereleased for Special Editions. The titles you gave are just some movies that Disney wanted to give a 2 disc to. Well, I think so. But, maybe there'll be other movies rereleased later, I don't know.
For 'Lady And The Tramp', the movie is part of the Platinum Editions releases, and I think it will comming in 2005 or 2006 (check the webiste, I think it is said somewhere).
For 'The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad' and 'Fun and Fancy Fre'e I don't konw about Region 1 rereleases but I know that they have just been released in Region 2 (in UK or in France).
That's all I can tell you !

Other members of this board may disagree with me (feel free to do so with good reasons) but these are the titles I'm sure wont be up graded from their gold collection statues for a while....
Make Mine Music
Fun and Fancy Free
Melody Time
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad
The Aristocats
The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh
The Rescuers
The Fox and the Hound
The Black Cauldron
The Great Mouse Detective
Oliver and Company
The Rescuers Down Under
As for Lady and the Tramp if you really want it then I'd buy it. If your good at waiting then hold off for the Platinum collection.

Personally, I agree with you on that list. Also, I am going to try and hunt down Lady and the Tramp, because I'd like to have it in my collection soon. I don't like having to wait years and years.
I am a big fan of Mary Poppins and I planned on getting it within the next couple of weeks or so. But now I hear it's coming in a 2 disc set. But that's almost a year long wait! I don't think I can wait that long.

Info on the 2-Disc Special Editions here. Specifics aren't known on Lilo or Pocahontas yet, but we have a fairly good idea of what to expect from what was on Poca's laserdisc and what was missing from the L & S DVD - commentary, the 747 scene, the documentary was trimmed, etc.
I'd guess that the best candidates for 2-disc treatment in the future are things like Hercules, Mulan, and Hunchback. Hunchback was consciously downgraded to a single disc release, and some of its snazzier laserdisc components were dropped and Hercules and Mulan didn't receive any kind of special treatment and they're recent and popular enough for Special Editions, not to mention there's more making-of footage to include, more likely than not. Oh, and Pinocchio, certainly...however they're going to handle it. That will eventually get deluxe treatment, I'm sure, but when and how, I do not know.
Welcome to the forum!

I totally disagree with you. All those movies should be on 2-disk. If Treasure Planet gets 2 disk treatment all the others should. Fun and Fancy Free and Icabob should come out as an anthology SE. Smae goes with melody time and make mine music as well ad saludos amigos and three cabelleros.

I think it all depends on how much money Disney want, and when they want it. Generally they want all of it, and now.
Seriously, who would of thought The Lion King 1.5/3 would get 2 discs? Who? Disney know 2 disc sets sell better than 1 (doesn't explain the Treasure Planet mishap though, unless they've only discovered the sellability of 2 disc sets).
I expect most, if not all of the classics to have 2 disc sets by 2010.

I agree, they DESERVE to get the 2 disc treatment and I would love for them to. But I can't see them getting that treatment like the others are. Maybe Winnie the Pooh.

I would add Robin Hood and The Sword in the Stone to that list too. Though every animated classic should have a two disc special edition, Disney won't waste their time or money on titles that sell underwhelmingly.

What mainly happens in the 747 scene in Lilo and Stitch.Just asking, because of the SE.But otherwise expect only some of the Gold Collection to be Special Edition. The package films probably won't except for Ichabod.

This is very unfair. Lion King 2 and 1/2 both get two disk treatment and there not animated classics, and wern't in the theaters.

Calm down guys. I'm not saying those are the films that shouldn't get 2 disc releases (I'd buy any of the classics in 2 disc editions), I'm just saying that those are the ones for the time being probably wont be getting 2 disc releases.

I agree w/Matty-Mouse, the likelihood of those titles getting the double-disc treatment, anytime soon, is not there. Although I would love to see a SE of "Aristocats" and "The Rescuers". Perhaps is the new wave of SE's in 2004 sell extremely well, they will.

From articles I read when L & S came out, it sounds like Stitch stole a 747 and either crashed it into a building or almost did. The scene was cut out of the movie for obvious reasons.
In the good news department about the 2-disc "Masterpiece Editions," both Lilo & Pocahontas are coming out in May.

He didn't crash the plane, but hijacked it and flew it in between two skyscrapers that had an uncanny likeness to the twin towers...

Awesome news Inga! Thanks!
Hmm... any news on the special edition of "Dumbo" or any other film?

Thanks for clarifying, P.A.! I knew it was something 9/11-ish, but couldn't remember exactly what.
As for Dumbo, it looks like the 2-disc is coming out around the same time as Mary Poppins. Of course, this is Disney and they could change their minds at any given moment...

Well, even though not 2-disc nor "Special", Dumbo got a pretty decent release, right Luke?
