I haven't heard anything about the new Buena Vista released DVD. I'm really anticipating this DVD, though. Isn't it to be released next year? What do you think will be on the DVD? The usual?

It's already released, isn't it? anyway I got the R2 Optimum release and must say I know this is a Disney forum but it is the finest animated film I have ever seen.

Buena Vista is re-releasing it. I would guess because they would want it to match the other Studio Ghibli Buena Vista Released DVDs (except for Wave 1). And yes, it is a wonderful film, wonderfully animated too.

Is there something about this release making it superior to the previous one? I bought it some years ago at Best Buy when Spirited Away came out. They had a deal to buy 4 Gibli titles at a special price: Spirited Away, Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service (which I love), and Castle in the Sky. I went for the deal, though I haven't watched Castle yet. Those are the only Gibli films I have so far, and, besides several (though far from all) of the Sailor Moon DVDs, I don't have a lot of other Anime. Some, but not a lot.

Funny this should come up. I bought it today as it was on sale for $15. All reviews for that release have been positive and there has never been any confirmation of Disney releasing it again. In fact, the voice over company work said they have never been asked to do it, so I would say it is only rumour.
The voice over company said Ocean Waves was in the can and Only Yesterday was being worked on for the next wave. However, with all the tangled American rights for Tales of the Earthsea it may take awhile to see the next wave. Last I heard the first it could be released in america was 2009(Earthseas).
We will likely see the next untitled Ghibi movie first on which they are currently animating the third of five segments.
By the way I voted no because there is nothing wrong with the Mirimax release.

Well, they did release Pom Poko and My Neighbors the Yamadas in a wave by themselves... so it could be possible that they could put out another wave at some point.

I don't mean to get off topic, but since your talking about Anime. Have any of you seen Revolutionary Girl Utena The Movie? That movie to me is one of the most beautifully animated movies, the art is just marvelous, and the colors are so vivid.

I would raelly like to see Mononoke get a 2-disc, but it dosn't look likely. Being, in my opinion, the best film of all time, it truley deserves a 5 disc set.
Being with the other Ghibli films, Disney hasn't made me too happy. Only Yesterday is suspended indefinately, without any justification given by Disney. Ocean Waves rights were bought just for Japan. A Ghibli "shorts" DVD was mentioned but nothing has been compiled. To top it off Tales of Earthsea is have property rights for the US, leading to at least a 2 year ait for the movie in the US. Takahata's first work, Little Norse Prince Valient, was released in Region 2, with subtitles, but nothing in the US.

As all the Japanese R2 Studio Ghibli DVDs have English subtitles, you could order any of the ones that are not coming here for a while (or ever) from Amazon.co.jp.
I did that for Ocean Waves, Only Yesterday, the Ghibli Shorts DVD (the Capsule music videos and the alternate English lyric version of On Your Mark are more than worth it), and the Ghibli Museum DVD and don't regret it at all. They're excellent DVD releases.
[Note: Even if you don't have an all-region DVD player...you can still watch alternate region DVDs on your computer by use a program like "Remote Selector" and you won't have to switch region codes on your DVD-Rom drive.]

I thought I had seen "Only Yesterday" on Amazon.com. Hmm. Could it have been a subtitled version? Maybe it was something else. What's the plot of that one? I saw part of that one once, but don't remember what it was about beyond a girl taking a trip to the country and remembering her childhood. Anyone got a better synopsis?

It has a 3-disc set in Japan. Who knows it might get released again next year for the 10th anniversary?

Does anyone know about any plans to release a dub of Grave of the Fireflies? That is a Ghibli film, right?

A dub of Grave of the Fireflies is already available as a rather nice 2 disc set, Disney does not have the rights to it however.

I am not really excited because I watched it once and could not finish it.

Regarding "Only Yesterday," I started a petition to get it released on DVD. Sign it at
http://www.petitiononline.com/nx01a/petition.html
Also my personal site has a page on Ghibli history. (It's written from the perspective of my character in a "Star Trek" role-playing game, so you'll see references to a "21st century counterpart," which is me.)

Central Park Media put out both a single disc and later went back and put out a
2-disc version.
