Is the Platinum Edition of Aladdin OOP yet? It would seem likely, seeing as Bambi and Lady and the Tramp are going OOP on 01/31/07.

No, the title is not OOP as of this time

I doubt it will ever go back due to poor sales.

It is in the UK but not in the US for some reason

I'm just guessing (so don't quote me on this), but I think that Aladdin sold better in the UK than it did in the US. (For some reason..). At least, that's what I heard.

By the way, can someone please refresh my memory again and tell me why Aladdin sold so poorly?? I mean, it is one of the fab four, and it has fantastic bonus features..

Maybe due to poor advertising... Compared to Cinderella and now TLM that both had massive PR...

Reasons why Aladdin sold so poorly:

1. Poor advertising - you didn't see as huge an ad campaign for Aladdin as you did for TLK, BATB, or SW. It was almost as if the release was a really kickass afterthought.

2. Inability to use Robin Williams' name as a selling point - since the entire debacle between Williams and Katzenberg/Disney in the early 90s, he refuses credit for Aladdin and refuses to have his name be used to promote the movie, wanting it to stand on its own wonderful merits. If only they could have mended ways and allowed his name to be used at least a couple of times, more people likely could have remembered how great the movie was and bought it.

3. Release date - October 2004. Perfect for the holiday rush, but it could have benefited from, again, a better ad campaign. Too much happens in the fall, DVD-wise, that I'm surprised fall Platinums have gotten the numbers they have. Fall Platinums *should* be the premiere Disney DVD release next to the treasures, and yet the last couple (Cindy and TLM) have been underwhelming IMO (features wise, not sales wise).

4. . Great DVD, but not what the Average Joe cares for - It's a great DVD with an excellent 110-minute documentary that delves more into the production than the previous PE's. And yet it sold poorly. The average joe who hates widescreen because of black bars don't want great DVDs. They want fullscreen-only versions where the only main bonus feature they'll care for is deleted scenes. Seriously. I remember reading about a poll, where when asked what the most important bonus feature was for a movie, a lot of people said "Deleted Scenes". Which is why every frickin' release will have them, and in most cases, it seems like they add deleted scenes for the sake of saying, "Hey look, deleted scenes!"

The Aladdin DVD is one of the best Disney has ever produced, and is perhaps *the best* from the Platinum line (yes, even surpassing SW in my ever so humble opinion). It's a shame that not enough people bought it simply because it didn't have quite as prominent a princess or quite as prominent a talking lion.

I'm also surprised that Aladdin hadn't sold very well. Personally it's my favorite Disney animated movie. I think it's good even without Robin Williams (although the Genie IS one of the main reasons why I like the movie, he isn't the ONLY thing I like about it though )
