Now call me crazy… (Lion King with laugh track?)

I’ve been wondering about this for years and now I finally have somewhere where I can tell people about this.

On the last day of term at my primary school it was always a fun day. Students were allowed to bring board games into class and play them or we could all watch a movie we had brought from home. Just as long as it was appropriate. Generally it was a really nice way to kick off the holidays.

One year, around 1995 or 6 I think, one boy brought in a copy of “The Lion King”. Of course, it’s appropriate the teachers say, so we’re allowed to watch.

Except this copy was different. The copy had, and I’m not making this up, a laugh track.

I remember very clearly a scene (and a not particularly funny one at that) where Simba runs off (no, not Mufasa’s death) and the laugh track kicked in. One student even remarked, “That’s not very funny :(

So has anyone else heard about this “special edition” or even seen it themselves? Keep in mind that I’m Australian, so this might have been an Aussie only thing (who knows why). I’ve tried searching for information for this but so far I’ve found none.

maybe its a cinema recorded bootleg?

I’m pretty sure it wasn't, the quality was far too good and the laugh track was definitely stock laughter. The case it came in looked legit too.

maybe its clearer in ur memory considering it happened in 1995/6. just my theory :) i remember watching a lion king bootleg last century and when simba was chased by the hyenas, one girl shouted "run simba!". i thought it was nala but alas it ain't. i also get to see aladdin with a laugh track and applause in the end. maybe just maybe, the bootlegger had a hi def camcorder for that time? don't get mad, just my theory :D

Hmm, you probably are right. Thanks for shedding some light on this, now I won’t have this niggling at the back of my mind every now and then :) I wish I had some sort of contact info. of the boy who brought it in (I still remember his name!) but calling up and saying "Hi, remember me? By the way, did you ever own a bootleg copy of The Lion King?" would be a bit weird.

Okay, you're crazy!

Never heard of dubbing a laugh track into any version of "The Lion King". Of course, it would improve the film.

Zazu: There's one in every family. Six in mine.
(laugh track)

Simba: What does that make you?
Scar: A monkey's uncle!
(laugh track)

Nala: The water hole? What's so great about the water hole?
Simba: I'll tell you when we *get there*
(laugh track)

Scar: Run away, Simba. Run away and never return!
(laugh track)

Timon: Hakuna Matata
(laugh track)

Simba: You knew my father?
Rafiki: Correction, I *know* your father.
(laugh track)

Scar: I killed Mufasa.
Simba: LOUDER!
(laugh track)
Scar: I! Killed! Mufasa!
(laugh track)

Wow, this gets me thinking if other animated classics had a laugh track...

Bambi's Mother: Man has entered the forrest.
(laugh track)

Jasmine: I'm not a prize to be won!
(laugh track)

Fa Zu: My my what beautiful blossoms we have this year. But look, this one's late. I bet when it blooms, it will be the most beautiful of all.
(laugh track)

anytime Snow White sings
(laugh track)

Maleficent: No! It cannot be! Now you shall deal with me, old prince, and all the powers of hell!
(laugh track)

oh man, what a sight would that be...[/b]

Maybe it was a typo, but Maleficent says, "Now you will deal with me, O prince, and all the powers of hell!" You could also probably type it as "Oh prince".

That's a really good idea. What do you think the best movie to riff would be?

The Little Mermaid and The Lion King in all their overrated glory.

I think Aladdin would be good too, plenty of parachute pant jokes and "Da da da da da da da da, can’t touch this!" action.

Just call and ask. Say "Hey I was just curious. Do you remember when you brought in that tape of The Lion King..."

You'll never know 'til you ask!
