Surprised it hasn't been posted already, but seeing as there was a Disney Hallowe'en thread...They can be Disney too I guess....

Saw Freddy v Jason the other night and it got me thinkin'...and today being October 31 and all...

I am an unabashed cheesy horror film fan. The list is really long, so I'll pick a select few. I guess mine would be:

Halloween - the original, the best. Loomis rules 'Nuff said

Silent Night, Deadly Night -Puuuunnnnish.This was one I rented once based on the fact it had been banned in Queensland (big sticker, it doesn't take much). I couldn't stop laughing

Night of the Living Dead - and to a lesser extent, Night of the Living Bread (ok, I just bought the Millenium Edition DVD).

Dawn of the Dead - sequels suck? I think not. There are about 50 different versions of this (ok, closer to 4 or 5). Hopefully Anchor bay will release that SE next year ...

Evil Dead Trilogy - hail to King baby! Speaking of Anchor Bay, I can't keep up with all their SEs of these movies. Love 'em. (And I'm not alone there I'm sure).

Friday the 13th - the original will always have a special place in my heart for many reasons, not least of which is Kevin Bacon in tight little speedos.

Scream for all the reasons I love the above and more. Same goes for Wes Craven's New Nightmare.

Goddammit, I'm sure there is more, but buggered if I can think of them now...

So what scares/amuses everyone else?

I'm a HUGE fan of the Halloween films, well, the original and Part 2 anyway. Also, films like The Shining, The Fog and Alien are favorites of mine. Not that big a fan of the slasher/horror genre in general so that's probably about it for my list.

I like my horror films that deliver suspense rather than gore, most of the time.

Hmm...guess that's about it. Of course, Alien, The Shining are both very good, too. And Cujo.

Signs was pretty scary, too, as was The Sixth Sense to a degree...but with Shyamalan films, it's kind of weird to label them "horror." But I do like those two.

And Teen Wolf, which while it has nothing to do with Halloween, is a great film that I watched last night.

Sleepy Hollow

I love the atmosphere in this one. It isn't so much scary as tongue-in-cheek horror.

Evil Dead 1 and 2, Re-Animator, From Beyond, The Living Dead trilogy, Return of the Living Dead, Phantasm 1 and 3, Motel Hell, Near Dark, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, A Nightmare on Elm Street 1, 2, 3 and New Nightmare, Freddy vs Jason, Hellraiser, Candyman, Brain Damage, Child's Play and its sequels.

Has anyone since "The Others"? it was a good horror film, unlike "Salem's Lot" which almoust killed me...

The Others.Horrible.Nicole Kidman is crazy in that movie.Kill her early,and then they would have got somewhere.But the coolest horror scene is the tree rape scene in The Evil Dead.Very awesome.

I tend to prefer the unseen, rather than buckets of gore. That said, I enjoy the Evil Dead films because of all the gore - it's just so OTT it adds to the fun. Evil Dead II is the ultimate horror pic for me - it has a few shocks the first time you see it, it's gory to the point of excess and it's all tongue-in-cheek (My favorite bit is when the woman is dragging the injured man and banging his head on stuff). Classic.

But the most disturbing film I've seen is Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. Everything about this film is calculated to disturb. And it does show gory scenes, which are even more disturbing due to the lack of gore. I still feel queezy when I see the letters being removed from under the finger nails - it effects me much more than buckets of blood.

Also, having seen it again on DVD the original The Haunting is very scary. I saw it ages ago as a kid and thought it was rubbish, but it really is a classic. You just have to think about it, and how you would feel in the same situation. Knowing that the Professor's wife is in the nursary and there's nothing he or anyone else can do to save her really is scary.

By the way, the Dreamworks "remake" is a parody of the original. That's right isn't it? Because I hope it was meant to make people laugh and not scare them, or else it's the biggest flop in Cinema history. (Not to mention it suffers from the need of "Hollywood" to have a "happy ending"). I hope Speilberg had nothing to do with that stinker. A true example of how CGI effects can ruin a movie.

Scream and Scream 2 are good, 2 being better than the first in my opinion. Sadly all Scream 3 has going for it is Parker Posey.

speaking of scary movies... did anyone see Scary Movie 3 yet?? i loved the first... the second sucked... and the third looks awsome!! im also psyched that Kevin Smith scripted and George Carlin makes an appearance... the two of them being my favorite comedians alive today...
