Many of Disney's sequels were straight to dvd/vhs. I have only gotten around to watching a few of them, but here are my favorites

Aladdin2 and 3
The Lion King 2
The Little Mermaid 2
Of course the ultimate Toy Story 2

which other ones do you recommend? I don't want a sequel to spoil the original or anything*, but from what I've heard so far Hunchback 2 and Mulan 2 are passable.

*Pocahontas 2 really disappointed me. The original, while historically wrong on so many levels, had beautiful animation and music, esp. colors of the wind. How can they make a sequel with no music and basically take a crap on John Smith? Sad

I always thought that Pocahontas II was an effort by Disney to right the historical wrongs they made with the original film.

Lilo & Stitch II: Stitch Has A Glitch
Stitch! The Movie

Brother Bear II
Kronk's New Groove

In my opinion, the best sequels have been "The Lion King 1.5," "Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch," "Kronk's New Groove," and "Brother Bear 2." Of course, that's not including theatrical sequels, of which the best have deffinatley been "Toy Story 2" and "The Rescuers Down Under." The sequels that I felt were decent were the "Aladdin" sequels, "The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride," "An Extremely Goofy Movie," "Mulan 2," and "Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas." Sequels that I would completely stear clear of and avoid are "Cinderella 2," "Tarzan 2," "Return to Neverland," and my all time worst, "Pocahontas 2." There are others that fall through the cracks where they aren't completely aweful, but aren't really good. To me, those are films like "The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea" where there was a lot of potential, but something went wrong somewhere between conception and creation. The songs in that film are so aweful and the animation fails to look decently like the original. The animated series did a better job at the underwater animation. In the sequel, everything is bright blue and unnatural looking.

I am proud to say that I to this day have never owned, or even seen for that matter a Disney direct-to-video sequel. I have seen "Toy Story 2" and "The Rescuers: Down Under" but both of those fims had theatrical releases. I think the concepts for a lot of the direct-to-video releases are just silly, so I just don't bother to watch. I guess I feel like I love the original films so much that a disappointing direct-to-video sequel/prequel will taint the original. (kinda like how you cringe when you see movies like "Save The Last Dance 2" and "Bring It On...Again" at the movie rental places...or at least I do) That might sound weird to some of you, but it's just my opinion.

Correct me, if I'm wrong, but 'tangyteng' was saying he/she liked the direct-to-video sequels, and I believe that those I singled out of 'numba1lostboy's' post were all released to theaters before coming to video.

Not that they are bad or good, but I think we are looking for best direct-to-video sequels, and not the ones that hit the theaters before coming to video release.

I like Cinderella II but I think Cinderella III will be better.

I just bought Aladdin 2 & 3. those were my favourite sequels, right up there with Poc. 2 & Lion Kin 2 & 1.5, Princess Diaries 2. I don't go out of the way to get sequels, but my favourite movies get a bye.

Correct, except for Aladdin & the King of Thieves. That one actually was a DTV release.

Okay heres where I stand with sequels

Like:

Peter Pan 2 (except that Octopus, they shoulda kept the Crocodile )
Lady and The Tramp 2 (especially the song near the end about Family)
Jungle Book 2
Lion King 2

50/50:

Little Mermaid 2 (I'm easily amused so thats why I kinda like it)
Anything Winnie The Pooh (if they count that is since theres so many)
Aladdin Return of Jafar (they shoulda left Jafar out of it)
Aladdin King of Thieves

Didn't Care For:

Atlantis Milo's Return

Other than that if I didn't list it, it's because I haven't gotten off my butt and watched it yet, I've seen most of Pocahontas 2, and I like it from what I've seen, but what I don't get is why everyone is always going on, and on about how it isn't historically accurate, I never even knew Pocahontas was a real person till I had to do a report on her, which I failed on . But the way I see it, kids who watch these movies (and me) most likely don't want to watch something "educational" since they would lose intrest, but thats my opinion. When I saw Prince of Egypt, I was bored out of my mind because it was teaching me about the bible, and stuff. Well, time for me to go see who's banging on my door

It could be safe to assume that while he primarily wanted to talk about DTV's ("many of..."), we can still talk about theatrical sequels as well (Toy Story 2 listed as well as "other ones" being a general area.). Also, we don't need to limit ourselves to animated sequels, despite that being what many think about when on a Disney board in a thread about sequels...

Then I recommend you don't watch the 3-hour 1956 epic The Ten Commandments. And technically, it doesn't teach the Bible, it teaches about certain Biblical stories.

well, they would have had to change the title of the movie lol, I for some unknown reason just hate Jafar. Anyways back on topic, even if the disney sequel sucks, I"ll buy it if I can get it for dirt cheap, like at Blockbluster or the local movie rental places here, since it's disney, and part of the series.

Focussing on Disney animation, here are my sequel opinions (hope I didn't forget any):

Lion King II: Simba's Pride (Thought this was excellent)

Little Mermaid II: Return To The Sea (Haven't seen this in forever. I remember it being okay, but would have preferred a prequel. Wasn't happy with killing the happy ending for Ariel, or with seeing her as a mom)

Return Of Jafar (terrible animation most of the time, if I recall correctly, and the story is nothing compared to the movie. I've warmed up to it as a segway to the show and King of Thieves though. Think of it more like a series pilot.)

Aladdin And The King Of Thieves (Not on the level of the film, but I still like this one a lot. Think of it as a series finale)

Jungle Book II (Pretty disappointing as a huge fan of the original. A lot of potential wasted. It's still a decent film, but it should have matched the original much more, yet been MORE original in the writing.

Return To Never Land (I like this a lot for the most part. They needed to use REAL kid voices, because adults never sound right, and they needed to lose the pop songs. Plus, I miss the croc)

Rescuers Down Under (Thought this was excellent)

Beauty And The Beast: The Enchanted Christmas (I like it a lot, though the animation isn't up to par)

Toy Story II (Thought this was excellent)

Lady And The Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure (How sad that they turned this into a theatrical style musical. The first one wasn't. Again with adults doing kid, or puppy voices in this case, and the story could have been much better. Scamp deserved a movie, he's a beloved comic character, but this movie wasn't up to snuff)

101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure (I remember actually liking this one, though I haven't watched it in forever)

Hunchback Of Notre Dame II (this was a huge mistake)

Lion King 1.5 (Timon and Pumbaa are always fun. This is pretty good, but they completely dropped the Timon origin from the TV series!)

Cinderella II: Dreams Come True (This was completely false advertising. I think this is an enjoyable film, but should be called "Mouse Mouse Tales," and they should have had fewer moments of Cinderella being less than Happily Ever After)

Beauty And The Beast: Belle's Magical World (Actually, I haven't seen this in forever, and only the VHS version. Still need this DVD. However, as I recall, it's like short cartoons of Belle and Beast? If not really viewed as a sequel, it's probably okay. I don't remember it well enough to comment much)

Stitch! The Movie (Again, I don't remember this well, though I have the DVD. I think it was basically like a TV pilot, and probably as good as the show, which I like quite well).

Bambi II (This is the best 2D Disney animated sequel I have seen, after maybe the theatrically released Rescuers Down Under and Tigger Movie. Only thing I would change about that I can think of right now is the modern songs)

Tarzan II (I own this one but haven't given it a good, hard viewing yet)

Hercules: Zero to Hero (Well, this was basically just episodes of the very funny TV show strung together with bad animation, still not on DVD yet)

Tarzan and Jane (Again, episodes of the TV show strung together. It's a good show. These sorts of things don't glue together well enough to be called "movies" though. They should just release the freakin' shows.)

Tigger Movie (Thought this was excellent, except maybe shouldn't have had such modern references in Tigger's musical number, though they were funny).

Pooh's Grand Adventure (Still need the DVD and haven't watched the VHS in forever. As I remember, this was fairly good, but could have been better).

Piglet's Big Movie (Not as good as the Tigger Movie, but I think I remember this being fairly good. Piglet isn't my fave character, but he's cool)

Pocahontas 2 (I know it feels like they're ruining the John Smith character, but they're just sticking to history here. I thought the animation was weak mostly, if I remember correctly, but I enjoyed the story. I haven't seen it in a while though. Hard to give an accurate assessment)

Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas (Thought this was excellent)

An Extremely Goofy Movie (Thought this was excellent)


Sequels I Have Never Seen (but hope to get eventually):

Personally, I think any film has the POTENTIAL for a great sequel. It's all in the writing. I don't go in for that idea of not messing with the original. I just feel they should make sequels with great respect and continuity, and great writing. Of course, it's best to avoid happily ever after fairytale films, since you don't want to mess with that happy ending... Princess stuff should probably all be prequels or story within the story stuff...

Personally, I would like to see more direct to video Disney, but I want to see more stuff like "Mickey's Three Musketeers" and some direct to video films in the vein of "DuckTales the Movie." How about some more DuckTales movies, direct to video? How about some Darkwing Duck and Talespin movies? Gummi Bears and others? That's what I'd like to see from Disney direct to video... Or, how about some "Roger Rabbit's Toontown" movies? Bring back the characters for some all 2D animation movies taking place within Toontown... Maybe Roger has set up a detective agency of his own, within Toontown.

As a movie projectionist for over 25 years I can tell you that "Aladdin and the King of Thieves" was releaed theatrically in some parts of the country.

And I am such a stickler for people being lazy - DTV is Dance Television Videos - while the correct way to list direct-to-viceo releases is Dtv. Can we all get with that program. It is so confusing. The minute I see DTV, all I can think of are those short fillers on the Disney channel of pop songs done to edited Disney shorts.

I think we need to have a vote somewhere on this.

Dtv - Direct-to-video

DTV - Dance Television Videos

Dtv - Direct-to-video

Well acronyms can stand for a lot of things and don't need to be limited to one definition. Within certain contexts, an acronym will mean one thing, while in another context, it would mean another.

For example:

AMC = All My Children (tv soap)
Example: "Did you catch AMC yesterday? JR was being such a ratbastard!"

AMC/aMC = American Movie Classics (channel)
Example: "They were showing Jaws for the 900th time on AMC/aMC so I turned to ABC to watch Lost"

AMC = American Multi Cinemas (AMC Theatre)
Example: "We're going over to the AMC to watch that new movie The Departed"

Plus, within the context of certain discussions here on UD, many of us would naturally associate DTV with Direct to Video, as not many of were around when DTV meant Dance Television Videos. Within the context of discussing Disney sequels (animated or live-action), many would primarily use DTV instead of direct-to-video because it's what they were brought up with. I grew up with it simply meaning Disney TV, but have since adopted direct-to-video as well.

So there's really set-in-stone "correct" way to list acronyms and abbreviations, since many people use them in different ways. And of course, if we didn't want people to be lazy, we could simply not use acronyms and abbreviations and write it all out.

Yes, a surefire sign of poor quality is "straight to video/DVD". However, if it worked with the Olson Twins...

I despise DTV sequels. They just don't have the feel of the original films. i was dissappointed in the Lilo and Stitch sequels especially the ones that involved all the experiments. Lady and the Tramp II was just an embrassment to the original.
