Any aspect...hmm...

I still haven't watched the discs and I've had them for a bloomin' week!

And yet Supergirl is still being played at least once a day either on my laptop or on the tv...

"Mermaid" DVD sells 4 million copies in week

Seventeen years after its theatrical debut, Walt Disney's "The Little Mermaid" is making a big splash on DVD.

The two-disc Platinum Edition of the animated classic, which hasn't been available on DVD in seven years, sold more than 4 million units last week, Disney said Tuesday, making it the top animated October DVD debut ever.

The fact that "Mermaid" could be bought for $12.99 on Apple's iTunes music store reportedly rankled Target Corp. and prompted the chain's president to send a letter to all the Hollywood studios, pressing for equitable pricing on DVDs. (Target's Web site priced the package at $14.87, down from a list price of $29.99.)

But Disney home video chief Bob Chapek said the sales success "also presents strong evidence that DVD and the digital space can co-exist in a healthy and dynamic environment ... and that is good for the industry overall."

Disney said the film's DVD debut was bigger than any previous Platinum Edition release, an elite club that includes such classics as "Bambi," "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King." The studio announced on Tuesday that its next Platinum Edition DVD release will be "Peter Pan," coming in March 2007. The 1953 film has undergone an extensive digital restoration and features a new 5.1 home theater mix.

Bonus features on the two-disc edition ($29.99) include a never-before-seen alternate opening set in Neverland rather than the Darling family's home; three new multi-level games; a deleted song; an interview with Walt Disney on why he made "Peter Pan"; a making-of documentary; a storybook; and a preview of the new "Tinker Bell" movie.

Can I just say that Pete Seeger does more singing than Ashley Tisdale does on Kiss the Girl.

WOW!! 4 million copies in a week, that is amazing!! Especially for a movie that has been out (off and on) for 17 years. Just goes to show how much people still love their classic animated Disney movies, and how they are becoming "new movies" to a whole new generation. Awesome!!

This is great news! I still haven't watched it, all the way through. I'm going to make it a goal on Friday. I've just been too busy, since I've purchased it.

It certainly appears that The Little Mermaid has made herself a part of our world in a big way!

I also hope that Disney will continue the excellent work that they've done with this release, into the remaining Platinum Edition titles.

Out of curiosity, who is Pete Seeger? Does he sing backup on the song or something?

Pete Seeger is an old folk singer who invented the "talking blues" style of folk. aka he doesn't sing at all. ;)

Oh! I get it. That's funny. Yeah. Miss Tisdale does seem to like to talk the verses on pitch. As an ex-choir section leader, I had problems with a member of the tenors who's definition of singing was holding a word on a pitch. It was not easy trying to explain to him that this kind of singing doesn't suit singing in a choir and is only good for solos if you a.) have a good speaking voice that sounds pleasent when held and b.) the song isn't one that conveys emotion. While I don't think Ashley Tisdale sounds completely bad, she has a problem carrying a tune without someone doing backup. At least I don't dig her voice on her own.

Does this mean Disney will finally get off their butts and release the TV series??

That would be awesome!!!! Although Disney would probably release individual volumes to cash in on the success and they would more than likely be the same episodes released on VHS because they are kind of lazy that way. Putting out 3 volumes at $14.99 would earn more money that a box set for $30. Also, I'm not sure if the Princess stories line is continuing, but doesn't that line basically rely on the recycling of episodes from this series and "Aladdin?" I thought I had read that the DVD line is done now that the "Enchanted Tales" series is begining, but if not, I can't see them selling these episodes elsewhere.

I hope so! They're really putting out nice season sets of all the classic animated shows so I'm sure TLM will be coming. How can they not think of this after TLM: PE sales. They must hear the cash register cha-ching sound!

:o :o 4 million copies!!!! That's so amazing. I think it'll become No. 1 PE.
I do hope they're going to release the tv series, as the PE is such a top seller.

I believe they already announced that The Little Mermaid is the top selling Platinum Edition. I think I heard it's 4 million+ first week sales beat out Cinderella's first week sales (which previously had the record) Very exciting news for The Little Mermaid!
