The Official Ferret Lost & Found

Original post title:
My Ferret is Missing (He's BACK Again!)

I know I have 6 ferrets, but one of them is missing now. It's a warm day outside and he's run away. I tried to find him, but one of my sonofabitching idiot roomates says they probably left the door open and let him out. I ran around the whole place for 10 minutes and outside for 20 looking for him and now I have to go to work. So there's a chance I will never see him again. He was my very favorite.

I am so upset I don't think I can eat tonight. I'm so angry at my roomates, I think I could kill them. If I never see him again, I will never be able to forgive them. I might never speak to them again. I might even move out. I am beyond anger and frustration right now. My face feels like it's on fire. I don't know what I'm going to do. I've had him for years and I love him to death.

No, I meant the door - to the house. When they get outside, they usually never come back. Ever. Their whole nature is constant inquisitiveness. So that means, if he weren't run over by a car or killed by another animal (a dog would/could certainly do it), he would be looking around outside for hours, get lost, and have no idea how to get home, so he'd just keep looking around until he gets killed, stolen, starves or freezes to death.

It is more than 95% likely that I'll never see him again. Remember this if any of you ever contemplate getting pet ferrets - don't ever let them get outside. And make sure to tell everyone you live with daily the same thing. My roomates, who have known for over 5 years how easy it is for a ferret to get outside, apparently forgot, and now my $250 pet, who I have loved dearly and cared for for over 2 years is gone and all they can fucking say is, "sorry. It was an accident." This same roomate is also to blame for the last 2 times this particular ferret got outside. The first time it was about this very same time of year and I found him less than 25 minutes after I realized he was missing - thanks to a neighbor. The second time it was winter, so he was safely secure underneath the house and I got him out the next day. Now it's early fall, I have looked everywhere, he's been gone almost an entire day, no one has called or stopped by. So he's either dead or lost now and I'll probably never seen him again.

I'm still angry enough to kill my roomate, there is no excuse under the sun for him forgetting to watch the door. I will never forgive him for this. I still don't ever want to see him again. I don't know what I'm going to do. I've been trying everything I can think of to try and forget, get passed it, drown myself in work and movies/TV - nothing is helping. The only thing I feel like would help is if he comes home. Which is as unlikely as a snowball staying around in hell for a month.

HE CAME BACK!!!

You all are never going to believe this - but I swear I never lie about anything. The very second I finished typing that thick paragraph, I heard a noise outside on my porch and I had to go outside to see what it was. All I saw was the orange cat, so I said, "oh it was just you" - THERE HE WAS!!!! Right at the door, scratching to get in!

I swear to God, I wasn't lying about this (though it seems like I must be, doesn't it?). I was so sad... I didn't know what was going to happen. I was already saying things like, "I can't ever love a ferret ever again," "I want to get rid of the rest of my ferrets" just because they're so unpredictable - in every way.

I prayed last night, haven't done that in a very long time. I'd like to think this was some kind of miracle - but I don't want to push things. I guess the animal just has better homing instincts than I figured.

We've already begun making special new precautions.

When he came back, his little nose was all brown and it's usually pinkish white. But I'll tell you, the guilty roomate was thankfully very relieved when I got him back and was actually very worried while he was at work yesterday. I figured he would be, he just never usually tells me about it. He spent at least 15 minutes at the food and water dispensers on the floor for our cats - he was really hungry.

I never expected him to just come back the way he did. Especially right after I had written that paragraph. I wrote it, edited it and when I pressed Submit, that's when I heard the noise. No more than 4 seconds after pressing my mouse click. Looked up - orange cat. Looked down, ferret tail. He's sort of a little Silver Mint. He looks just like my old silver mint, but my roomate got him for me and never mentioned that it was, but has never said that it wasn't. My roomate is the one who got me into ferrets, the one who didn't leave the door open. He got 2 one day, and I just ended up taking care of them all. One day back in 2000 or 2001. Thankfully we weren't that attached to them when the first one ran away a week or less later, but we still have the 2nd one and she's still alive, outlasting about 5 other ferrets since then who've died. She's a real trooper.

Glad to hear all's well that ends well. I know from experience there is nothing more traumatic than a missing pet.

I just wanted to add that "My Ferret is missing (He came back)" is a great song title.

Maybe something a little bit country. :)

I want to say thanks to everyone. It's good to know you're there in those really dark times. At least, I feel better now that he's back and safe where he belongs. In a cage - :P . But he gets out to play every day for at least 6 hours, which is all he needs, since they all seem to get tuckered out in less than 75 minutes and they go back to sleeping anyway. They're just so darn adorable.

You are never going to believe this - but he's gone again. That idiot roomate has been moving out for the past several days and yesterday when they were out and he was moving things, Keeko was sleeping in the cage while all the other ferrets were out, playing. Now I have to get really worried, because yesterday he slept all day long and I didn't even see him get out and play. When I put him in his cage for the night yesterday, I saw him and he was there and everything. So I let him out today at the normal time because I have no idea when the roomate will be heading out, and LOW AND BEHOLD, he's gone - and so is Keeko. He would never take him, ever. So, he's definitely outside somewhere again. He could be out all night again, like last time, and come back in the morning. MAYBE. I have no way of knowing.

I'm trying my very best not to get worried again, but how do I know he's okay? I did my Squeak Search inside and outside with squeaky toys to get his attention, but he didn't come around. I'm afraid that if I don't get worried and look for him all over or keep thinking about him - that I won't find him like last time. The only way not to worry is not to think about it, to try Resting Assured that he'll come back tonight or tomorrow. To hope. But all these things make me think, and get worried.

Well - the facts : It's cold tonight and it will probably get colder. If he's near the house when he notices it, he might actually get back to the house, get under it and stay warm there then try to scratch at the door or make noise so I'll hear him ... if I'm not working when he scratches or makes noise. All I have is a Maybe, an oft-chance. The roomate is gone now and the only time he's coming back will be to get CDs and speakers he left behind - thank GOD these little guys don't have a habit of getting in cars! I'm certainly not as worried as I was before, I hope he remembers the routine last time because then he'll be back before long.

Oh, goodness! I will be hoping for his safe return, like last time. He must be an adventurous little guy, because it seems like he loves to take off!

Keep us updated.
