And I'm recording it to DVD! (Well, Hard Disc and then DVD)

Same here! I have work in a bit so I'll watch it when I get back home.

It's times like this I wish I had a DVDRecorder, I had to dust of the VCR!

Also I like the way that even though there's a thread about this in the international section, you created another one in general just to rub it into the faces of the Americans who never venture there!

I suppose the question is, will this be for the last time? Iger supposedly slapped a worldwide ban on this at the end of last year to prevent it being released in any country. However was the BBCs deal to this an existing one from before that decision? They normally gets the rights to 3 showings and if memory serves me, this is the 3rd time of recent years.

I just caught this on tv this morning! Fantastic animation - and a beautiful print of the movie. Do you guys realize that this time last week they showed "The Reluctant Dragon". Fingers crossed next sunday we'll see another Disney Classic lol

I overslept and forgot to watch it. Nevermind anyway, as I have both a broadcast record video and one of the 1990s UK video releases that I found in June for 99p in a charity shop. If I ever get a DVD Recorder (hoping that this news will be soon), I am surely going to transfer one of these to DVD.

I dont know if it helps, but your local euronics centre do some really good deals, i dont know how much for a dvd recorder but for instance i got a multi region sony for £50. Christmas is not to far away, a possibility perhaps, or dare i say (gulp) cut down for a while on dvds, to buy one. not wanting to poke my nose in but hope this is usefull info.

I'm so jealous! Did they ever show this movie on US TV? I think I did see this as a young kid but I don't remember anything about it!

I still find it oh so funny that one of the most popular rides at the Disney Theme Parks is based on Song of the South (Splash Mountain). I find it even funnier that half of the guests riding said attraction have absolutely no clue what said film is.

not to mention how "zip-a-dee-doo-dah" is being shoved in your face at every corner in Disneyland.

Here in Holland, the weekly Donald Duck magazine has been publishing Brer Rabbit comics almost weekly since the magazine was first published back in 1952.

Everyone here knows these characters. and the song. but the movie? Disney is just sitting on it.

I did however see about the first 30 mins of this about 4 years ago. At the time I was not overly impressed with the film, but will watch it through different eyes now. At the time I had no idea how rare it was!

I'm about to watch it now I hope it has been worth the wait!

The version shown was taken from a NTSC master, as it recording exhibits 3:2 Pulldown, (This is something most visible on the hanging Brer Rabbit shot) and is not something that would be present on a new PAL transfer. Although the ghosting looks bad on still captures, you tend not to notice it with movement (much the same way film grain is more visible on static shots).

Overall though, its not a bad transfer. The opening is slightly shrunk and windowboxed to allow the full detail to be visible on the screen. The windowboxing is removed once the opening credits have finished.

Note: These JPEGS have additional artifacts over the recording due to additional compression. Its a MPEG digital TV stream re-encoded to DVD, then saved as a JPEG.

Figured I'd make a comparison between three sources...

The first is a cap from the HK laserdisc (ripped onto DVD). The second is netty's BBC cap. And the third is from the Alice in Wonderland DVD.



The images are small to conserve bandwidth, but still, I doubt we'd need large images to see the difference. Anyways, figured it was interesting...

In their real sizes, the third is the best transfer, but because I minimized the images, it looks the darkest and somewhat murky compared to the others, so I can see how the middle would look better (when in reality, it looks only 20% better than the laserdisc cap).

Yeah, I fudged up with the sizes by accident, the laserdisc cap got stretched a bit, but the rest are truer to their proper ratio.

As you may know, "Song of the South" was on the British TV a few days ago. But in the US, they continued not to release it on DVD because Bob Iger said at the Disney Shareholders Meeting back in March that regarding the future of "Song of the South". He stated he had recently screened the film. And was concerned by some of the depictions and how they would be received. He stated that they have made the decision not to release the film. That continues to frustrate the film, but thanks to the Disney attraction "Splash Mountain", they uses references from "Song of the South". People are talking about how they use the characters for Splash Mountain when most people don't know what they're from, well I was watching House of Mouse a few weeks ago and the main characters were shown. I was a little surprised and if I wasn't such a Disney fan I wouldn't have known who they were.
