I'm referring, of course, to the giant yellow dot on the cover of each Disney DVD, proclaiming "Version francaise incluse".
It's annoying enough on the regular editions, but I could forgive it if it only showed up on the slipcases of 2-disc releases - but no. Titles like Lion King and Sleeping Beauty have the dot on both the slip and the internal case. What makes matters worse is that it's often given the worst placement possible. For example, on Lion King's cover, they put the dot in the upper-right-hand corner, signifigantly distracting from the image of Simba - while the bottom-left-hand-corner is virtually empty.

Although it's odd that some releases have it, while some don't. Hunchback doesn't have it, while Hercules does. It it new?
While Beauty and the Beast and, I'm assuming, Snow White have been spared, I don't look forward to seeing this ugly blemish ruining the rest of my Disney DVD collection.

I have bought some of my Region 1 DVDs from Canada and I also doesn´t like this yellow dot on the cover.
So nowadays I prefer to buy them directly from the US.

It is annoying. I don't understand why they can't just put a sticker on, instead of integrating it into the cover art.

Does the sticker not peel off easily and without leaving a residue?

It is not a sticker. They make it a part of the cover art.

I buy mine from Canada as well, and that is the reason to why I now are replacing all the covers with new custom made.

That is a shame.
I bought some discs from Canada recently. The vault Disney box set (it worked out at a huge saving for me).
I don't know if there WAS a french version on there, but what I did notice was a discreet little Canadian flag down the bottom of the rear artwork on the individual discs (near the region coding/NTSC symbols).

That would be a much better option IMO.

That is a large reason why some folks use DVDCoverArt.com... to replace the bilingual covers they were forced to get.

Luckily, there are some retailers who seem to have their suppliers ship from the States but I used to buy all my Disney movies from the US as a result. I only have about 3 discs with that annoying logo, I believe all are on my Gold Collection covers but I've learned to live with them. I've never seen them on any of the Platinum or 2-disc SE's though...

Well, it's on my Canadian Lion King Gift set - but not the outer set gift case, just the "opens like a book" slipcase and the disc case sleeve.

Although in the U.S we don't have that type of dot, many times though, there's a little TOO MUCH INFORMATION on the cover, like those stupid stickers that say "for the 1st time ever on dvd" or "$19.95".
They are much more distracting than the marketing people think. And also incredibly anoying.

The only place that I've seen sell that bilingual version was Wal-Mart. Everyone else carried the version with the dot.

Like you are referring to that, I was wonderring if ther are any differences betwen the US and the canadian Set of the Lion King (in spite of the cover) ?

I know there a French language on the 2 sets but are there subtitle in the canadian set ? 'cause there not in the US one.

What's up with the friggin' dot,and why do they put there?

I only have 1 DVD region 1 from Canada. It's the 2 movie double disc of 101/102 Dalmatians (live action). I was bothered by the "dot" but once I figured out that both movies are indeed widescreen I forgot about the "Dot" and counted my blessings. The US region 1 of 101/102 Dalmatians has one of the movies in widescreen. The Canadian version has both in widescreen.

Be lucky you don't live in Quebec! I've managed to avoid them for the most part, but a majority of dvd releases in general are featured with bilingual covers. For example "The Others" will read below "Les Autres, Version Francais" right underneath the title in large lettering, almost the same size as the English title. Many retailers carry predominently English covers but I've come accross a handfull of these annoying bilingual inserts!

I live in Australia, but have purchased "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad" and "Melody time" from Canada... Yes, that dot is very annoying. I realise there is a big French population in Canada, but the OFFICIAL language of the country is English, no matter how many people in Quebec would like otherwise.. I just don't know why it is necessary to make a note on the covers. The US has a large Latino population, but they don't have to put a note re there being a Spanish soundtrack being available on the cover. Where is the BV office located in Canada ?.. Quebec or Ontario ?

Tony, both French and English are official languages of Canada. Even though "only" 23,2% of the population.

There are laws in Canada that tells everyone to putt all sings and stuff like that in both french and american.

If you have seen the movie "Canadian Bacon" they make fun of that in a scene where they are driving a large van with a lot of propagada against Canada on the sides. A police officer stops them and they are getting nervous because they think he is going to take them because of this. No, not at all. He just politely tells them that it is iligal to have the writing in only english. So they can not drive the car more before they have translated everything into French.
