Treasures errors...

Some of my Disney Treasures discs have errors on them. I didn't scratch them or get them dirty. They seem to have been defective before I even got them. On my Mickey Mouse in Living Color DVD, the On Ice Pencil Test doesn't play, some of the Goofy shorts on the Goofy Set start at the very end of the cartoon, & on the Silly Symphonies set, the page that contains Cock O' the Walk has a major error. All the cartoons on that page are unplayable, they don't play.

Does anyone else have this problem, & if you do, please reply. Thank You.

Just checked all of mine, and they play fine. Did you try these on more than one DVD player?? Sometimes one player reads something differently than another. In the fine print on all Disney products it says something about "not all players will play all features on this DVD". I would check out your disc for fingerprints, and smudges, and try playing them on different players and see if you get different results.

My Disney "The Kid" will not play on anything but my PS2 DVD player. The movie plays fine on all of my players, but the special features can only be accessed on my PS2.

That's about all I can offer.

Thanks for the info, dvdjunkie. I'll try it out on my other DVD player.

Fantasia Man - did you buy them when they first came out or from a secondary market like Ebay? If it is the latter, could they be bootlegs?

I got them on eBay, but they were in their original packages. They were still wrapped in plastic with the stickers on the sides. Brand spankin' new.

They COULD be defective.

I have The Emperor's New Groove and Snow White Platinum Edition, and they're practically worthless. They do nothing but hang and stick and skip on multiple players.

So that proves that Disney DVDs are not perfect, not even Platinum Editions.

Defective discs occur, but quite rarely, in my experience. I don't think I've had any problem with neither Treasures nor Platinums (except The Lion King, but that was a different sort of problem...). It's my impression, though, that there are a lot of DVD players around these days that are hardly worthy of the name, so definitely check your "defective" DVDs in more players.

The chances of three defective Treasures DVDs is astronoical. Its either the player or you have bootlegs.

when you buy a cheap DVD player, you get cheap results. Don't be afraid to try a lot of players out before buying one you can afford instead of one you want.

DVD's are pretty simplistic, so it usually is in the player capability rather in the disc that the fault lies. I have no problems with any DVD's except for "The Kid", but I can live with that one. It's not that good a movie, but it is Disney.

Well my MMB/W volume 2 is defective with a black screen in one of the extras menus and also my SS from mexico freezes a little during the introduction... good thing I can play all the content without a problem in both of my treasures...

Julian, that is SAD about the Platinum Snow White! did you open it too late to return it? (I've not opened or played any of my platinums yet  )

It's just more of a reminder of how dumb I've been to buy all these DVDs and never had opened them

Unfortunately I have barely time to post in this forum let alone sit around watching DVDs. Just no time right now with school/work etc. so my option is to just not buy anything and in a couple years try and find these OOP on Ebay which may not play anyway.... so I opted for taking my chances and just buy NOW. 98% of stuff I've bought in the past 2 years has sat here unopened. So far of the things that I have bought and played, I've not encountered any problems.... I guess I better cross my finger that the rest of my collection is defect-free. I will probably continue to buy and let stuff pile up here unopened. :D

There's probably not much reason to worry - your DVDs probably work as they should. I've mentioned before, however, that there's hardly any value in keeping DVDs unopened - if you haven't got the time to watch DVDs now, it would still make very much sense to open them and check for scratches and so on - and see to it that the discs really are there. I suppose you could have difficulties trying to replace defective/missing discs a year or two after you bought them...

Good suggestion Lars. Thanks for that. I assume it is pretty rare to have discs be defective straight out of the box, but everytime this comes up here at the forums I do think about it.

I WOULD OPEN THEM TO MAKE SURE THAT THE DISCS ARE IN THE BOX

I have had twice happen where I open up the box of Disney DVD purchased From wal-mart and guess what NO DISC!! It happened once with the Fantasia Anthology where Fantasia 2000 disc was missing out of the 3 discs and then a Wal-mart 2 pack which had The Jungle Book Live Action and Jungle 2 Jungle and on of those were missing. The first time with Fantasia they understood and replaced it and luckily had another one they could use to replace it. Now the second time with the Jungle 2 Jungle and The jungle book LIVE ACTION which was at a differ wal-mart several months later Anyway they acted Like I was the Criminal of the Year and treated me very rude by saying these boxes look too worn to have been bought today. Then I came back in from the car with the security tape and then they exchanged them when that happened. I told Roy E Disney when I met him about it and he was quite surprised to hear this. So Pluto Region I'd Start opening those dvds from now on because you never know if this could happen again. Also I would save the reciepts from now on just in case it is too late to take it back to the store you bought it from you could always contact Disney Customer Service if you have the store reciept.

Oh man, I wish you hadn't had these experiences; I sure hate to sit down and start opening all these DVDs.... but you're all right. I should have been checking them. I really hate breaking open all my DVDs - something about having them nicely sealed.

But you know, you all got me thinking about this. I was over in the UD trade section and that one guy who sells alot of DVDs, he's selling the sealed copies for MORE money and selling the opened ones for LESS. From what DVDjunkie was saying, no collector would want to buy a sealed OOP because you want to know that it is playable and not defective, correct? So why is this guy charging MORE for the sealed unopened ones? Why is he not opening those sealed OOPs and inspecting the DVDs first? I mean, now maybe it is not such a good idea to be buying a "sealed" copy of anything; I guess I could ask for a guarantee? I am not sure how this works when you buy a sealed DVD private party from someone.

Because they're unopened, mint in package, which is much rarer. Would you like to buy mint, unopened package of underwear, or one that looks new, but is opened already?

I know that you used a  - but I'll just have to say that the underwear comparison does not work. If I'm to buy some sort of disc released years ago, I certainly prefer a copy that is known to work over one that has never been checked. If taken well care of (which is a requirement, of course), there should be no wear to worry about on a disc played by laser!

Don't forget that some people collect sealed copies of DVDs and LPs and things, with the intention of keeping them sealed forever. Since most copies out there will have been opened and used, it's comparatively harder to find an unopened copy, hence the price differential.

Of course, if you are buying a sealed DVD which you're never going to open, it doesn't matter if the disc inside is faulty or damaged - or even not there at all - because no-one will ever open it and find out. (It's like a bottle of vintage wine - the contents may have become undrinkable over the years, but no-one will ruin their investment to check.)

But if you are buying DVDs which you will (eventually) watch, it's very wise to at least open them when they arrive and give them a quick inspection to ensure they're not damaged (or the wrong discs).

I know someone who, if they haven't watched a DVD within a year of buying it, puts it on eBay and sells it. The theory is that if you haven't watched it within 12 months, you clearly didn't want to see it in the first place and it was a waste of money buying it.

Yes, there are some of those people, of course... - I'd say very few, though, who have no intention of ever opening the plastic. But, as you say, in those "exceptional" cases it really won't matter whether the box contains the wrong disc or no disc at all, since no one's ever going to find out...
