High School Musical Sequel Plot Revealed in Newsweek Article

Newseek had an article everyone seems to have been waiting for in their July 24, 2006 issue. "Disney's Star Machine" helps to shed light on the pop culture phenomenom of High School Musical and why it is such. It's a great article explaining why the heck it's topped the music charts since its premiere, why kids, tweens, parents, and religious groups embrace it and why it is in actuality a fantasy-film. My favorite part was "Lunchroom Politics," an article/chart/diagram of imaginary cliques of today's tween and teen stars: e.g. The "cool kids" is made up of Harry Potter, Jamie Lynn Spears, Drake and Josh, Emma Roberts, and Raven and the "wanna-bes" is nearly all Disney Channel kids.
There was also some information on The Disney Channel and the Disney company. Apparently, everyone's beloved Disney Channel (B.Z. - before Zoogs

) that is often remembered and cried about here was changed when Anne Sweeney, the former head executive from Nickelodeon came to Disney and changed the target audiences of the network. Moving on, here is what many/some are itching to find out...
Newsweek wrote:...They'll all return in full feuding form next summer for the sequel. East High is on summer hiatus, so the battleground shifts to the country club, founded by (who else?) Sharpay's granddad. Troy, Gabriella and the others show up as lifeguards, waiters and caddies. And the haves and the have-nots tee off in athe club's annual midsummer night's musical. There'll be plenty of drama: this time around, Ryan may turn on his sis.
IMO, this is rather disappointinig. I was expecting to see at least some of a stage musical in HSM, but alas I was denied. The sequel brought hope but no...it's still just about the people in a musical. The plot for the sequel sounds exciting...for a fanfiction. Oh well, we'll just have to wait and see what this turns out to be.

well that sux. After seeing High School Musical, I realized that the main part of the film wasnt even the musical. It was only the auditions. It would have been nice if the sequel would have continued and showed the actual musical.

This kinda sound likes Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. Minus the dancing, and adding more singing. I don't have any problem with the plot. I'm just happy that there will be a HSM2.
Hey Kram, maybe your dream will come true in HSM3

My main problem with HSM was... they never showed the actual musical! That got me pissed. For me it was totally leading up to it and the climax was... the auditions? I was hoping the sequel would start off where HSm left off, and maybe some drama unfolding on trying to get the musical open or something.

I know!! Lol, it's like with Lord of the Rings (spoiler ahead); I didn't know the story and I thought they would throw the freakin ring in a fiery pit of doom by the end of the first movie but noooooooo we had to wait for the series to end. blahhh
There definitely would be a lot of potential if the HSM trilogy was Auditions, Rehearsals, and the final show. There is definitely drama backstage and during rehearsals of a show. I wasn't in the cast or company of a high school musical, but I played violin in the pit and there was some interesting moments with the actors. Think about it...you got a bunch of drama people together for hours rehearsing nearly everyday for weeks. Lol, one time one of the lead girl's mic was still on during rehearsal when she was in the dressing room and there was some bitter spating going on that the whole pit and conductor probably wasn't supposed to hear.
I dunno...I guess they were trying to go in a different direction with the sequel. I hope TSoD is right and we get to see the musical that High School Musical was about

Disney seems to be very keen on taking elements of there other movies and putting them in others. So here's how I bet it will end:
The musical at the country club has been completely destroyed and put into disrepair. Troy has been hurt by Gabriella (who has doubts about being in the musical) and runs off, leaving the rest of the actors/singers all alone without a star.
Kelsey: We need to get this musical back on track!
Sharpay: I agree, we need to find Troy! No matter what it takes!
Gabriella: We have to throw away our old cliques and work together to find him.
Kelsey: Would you be willing to go to the end of the borders to find him?
(All agree)
Kelsey: Then we'll need a person who can put this play back together.
(All look as an unseen person begins to walk down the stairs. And its.....Mrs. Darbus! )
Mrs. Darbus: So tell me, what's become of my musical? (Credits start)
That is, until High School Musical 3: At School's End.

Oh man, if it were like that, I'd definitely check out HSM2 and 3!
Anyways, pretty much everyone here knows of my extreme abhorrence for High School Musical, and this news is more fuel for my fire of fury. But, it looks like my least-hated characters, Ryan and Sharpay, will be given more to do. So maybe...maybe...I'll watch it. Then I'll MST3K it. Then I'll purge it from my mind.

Here comes that age thing again. I guess I am getting too old for this stuff.
I actually tried to watch this pitiful production, but I couldn't stay awake during the film. The acting (?) was boring, the music wasn't music, and there just didn't seem to be any talent anywhere to be seen.
It must be for the younger set, and not for us of the older generation who have an appreciation for the better things like "The King & I", "A Chorus Line", and "West Side Story". Now those were true musicals.

Well it is a TV movie. You can't really compare it to the big, splashy movie musicals. The scary thing is that they're thinking of making High School Musical into a Broadway Musical. Egads!!

While I agree that age is a factor in whether or not someone today would actually enjoy the piece-of-dreck High School Musical, I think you may take some of us "younger set" for granted, Bill. I for one am a HUGE fan of the big splashy MGM musicals, with "The Band Wagon" being my personal favorite. I'm not trying to get on your bad side or anything (lord knows what happens when we disagree, lol), just that sometimes it makes a few of us feel insulted when you include and dismiss us as the same ignorant ones who have no idea there were good movies that were made before they were born.

This should have been the 3rd movie because in the first one it was first semester and the 2nd should be the 2nd then the third could be summertime because now the third will probably be the first day of the next year.
Also, it reminds me of SAVED BY THE BELL when they work at the beach club place

In no way was I trying to be insulting to anyone. Maybe I didn't get it across, that I am trying very hard to see what the youth of today sees in some of this stuff. I do have eight grandchildren and I would like ot relate to this through them, but they don't even watch this stuff. My eight-year-old granddaughter is in love with the movie "Grease" and she knows all the songs by heart and sings along very loudly.
My criticism of "High School Musical" was not intended to be an insult to those who think that it is good, or bad, or whatever. I was just trying to say that I am trying my darndest to see what the rest of you see in some of this 'drivvle' that you call movies. That word is an opinion, not a put-down.
You can't blame me for at least trying to understand what the heck is going on. I would hate for something great to pass me by because I had my eyes and ears closed.

Oh, I understand completely that it's opinion and not a put-down, it's just that you've got a special way with words, Bill that sometimes one sentence could be interpreted one hundred different ways, and I guess I misinterpreted a couple sentences.

Whether you're a fan of HSM or not, I'm just glad to see a film/tv musical doing so well again. This artform has been struggling over the last few years and perhaps HSM could change that.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong....
Actually, the first movie takes place in the second semester of the school year, because it's after the holidays and after new year's day, which for school is second semester, so it makes sence that the second movie would take place over the summer.
I found out about this plot a week ago in the ask ausiello at tv guide, and it looks different, and yes, alot like a younger version of dirty dancing, but with no dancing (that we know of yet). I'll watch it, and i'll give it a chance, and want to find out more.

The first movie did take place during the 2nd semester.

Not necessarily. The high schools across the US have different schedules. My school district and the ones around me start second semester around the end of January. We will only truly know if it takes place in second semester if we look up the high school schedule for Albuquerque, New Mexico.

We know the movie took place after New Year's Eve and during the playoffs of basketball season. So it's at least during the 2nd half of the school year. I know some colleges do tri-semesters, and some high schools do year round school, so it may not techinically be called 2nd semester, but the point is that it makes since for the sequel to take place during the summer, because the first one took place during the latter half of the year.
