Mini-Biography
Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977), known simply as Elvis and also hailed as "The King of Rock 'n' Roll" or "The King", was an American singer and actor.

Presley started as a singer of rockabilly, borrowing many songs from rhythm and blues numbers and country standards. He was for some time the most commercially successful singer of rock and roll, but he also sang ballads, and then moved toward country music. Personally, gospel was the music he cherished above all. Throughout his musical career of over two decades, Presley set records for concert attendance, television ratings and record sales. He has become one of the biggest selling artists in music history, with his record company (Sony BMG) estimating he has sold far in excess of 1 billion records.

The young Elvis has become an icon of modern American pop culture, sometimes held to represent the American Dream of rising from rags to riches through talent and hard work, more often representing teen sexuality with a hint of delinquency. During the 1970s, Elvis reemerged as a steady performer of old and new hit songs on tour and particularly in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he, as a nightclub performer, became known for wearing his standard jump-suit costumes. Until the last years of his life, he continued to perform before sell-out audiences around the country. He died, presumably from a heart attack combined with abuse of prescription drugs, in Memphis, Tennessee. As a singer, his popularity survived his death at 42.

Have mercy! That's a lot of albums sold.

Thanks to a movie involving this guy... :stitch: ...that makes two out of two artists featured in the series who can thank Disney for a boost in sales. Though, technically, Elvis can't thank Disney, because he was dead before Lilo & Stitch (and ELV1S, "A Little Less Conversation", etc.) came along. But I suppose some would argue he's not dead.

I suppose Disney could thank Elvis for discovering having two of the studio's future legends discovered in the King's films: Dean Jones in Jailhouse Rock (1957) and Kurt Russell in 1963's It Happened in the World's Fair. (Russell, of course, would later portray Mr. Presley in a noteworthy TV miniseries once he temporarily flew the Disney coop.)

Thus concludes this installment of Fun Disney/Elvis Connections...

WOW! It's true! HE ISN'T DEAD YET!!!

:P

Anyway, bout Elvis, I like Elvis (I actually liked him more when Lilo and Stitch came out, amazing what the mouse can do :P) favorite songs are probably "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock".

But, still, I'm not, and probably will never call myself a huge fan and as far as these threads go, I definetely prefer Areosmith much more.

I was just a youngster of 15 when I first saw Elvis Presley in person at the Pan Pacific auditorium in Los Angeles. I got to see his concert twice because the first night the police came on stage and arrested him for some lewd act toward Nipper the RCA Victor Dog that was on stage. Everyone got passes to come back the next night and see Elvis again.

When I worked for a record company in 1969, I got to go to Las Vegas and see Elvis' opening night at the International Hotel. I also was within five people of getting to shake his hand. But I missed that due to some time constraints and Elvis was whisked off to another part of the Hotel. My boss, at the time, told me that he would get me closer to Elvis in a couple of weeks. That never happened, but at least I can say I was "this close to Elvis".

One of my favorite songs of Elvis' is "Such A Night". It remains among my Top 10 favorite Elvis songs to this day.

A couple of my favorite movies are "It Happened At The World's Fair" because that was the movie that Kurt Russell kicks Elvis in shins to help him win the girl. The other favorite movie is "Blue Hawaii", and I like this one not only for the music, but for Angela Lansbury's portrayal as his mother. She almost steals every scene she is in with Elvis.

My favorite Gospel song of Elvis' is "He Touched Me", and I had that sung at my Baptism when I was 30 years old.

I still listen to Elvis regularly and my grandkids get a pretty good dose of his music when they are visiting. My 8-year-old granddaughter loves Elvis's music and is always asking me to play some of his movies. I have all of his movies on DVD, and most all of his original LP's on vinyl, and CD.

Great choice in artists this time around.

I have always been an Elvis fan. I hope to take a trip to Memphis one day to tour his home.

Trivia you may not have known about me: My fiance's name is Elvis, as his mother was such a fan she named her child after him. She lives in the Caribbean, where things like CD's and such cost a ton of money - so we just burned some for her and mailed them with a portable cd player. He hates his name, and most people call him by a nickname. LOL - his last name starts with a "P" too! I was sort of hoping he would name one of our sons Elvis as well, but needless to say it didn't happen.

Edited to add: my best friend's mom was kissed by Elvis when she met him!

I don't like his music. But he was a great singer. I've only seen 1 of his movies, Jailhouse Rock - but I liked it a lot. My roomates have several of his other movies, so I do plan on watching them later. He was a very, very sexy and beautiful man.

^Not exactly man. Keep an eye open for it next time.

I'm by no means a huge Elvis fan, but I do like what I know. I'm familiar with the really famous stuff -- "Hound Dog", "Jailhouse Rock", etc. -- and enjoy it (I think there's some sort of greatest hits album around here somewhere), though I don't often seek it out. "Can't Help Falling In Love," however, is one of my favorite songs. I also like "Love Me Tender" (Amy Grant has a great cover of this, by the way) and a few other ballads and some of his takes on old standards.

It's his Christmas stuff that I'm really a huge fan of. Elvis' Christmas Album is at least one of my favorites for the holiday season and it just wouldn't be Christmastime without it. I guess I should check out some more of his normal stuff.

As for acting, I've never seen one of his movies all the way through, but I did catch parts of Blue Hawaii in Florida and agree that Angela Lansbury (from what I saw) was great in it and she and Elvis surprisingly had really great chemistry.

Now why hasn't Dave Wadding replied to this yet?? :P

What is it that needs me to comment on exactly? Is it the fact that I have the Elvis sideburns or what?

But really, I like Elvis a lot. My grandma loved Elvis and has passed that onto me. I listen to a lot of Elvis, of course. My favorite Elvis song is In The Ghetto. I never really bothered with the Elvis movies, because I heard none of them were that good. I've seen bits and pieces of quite a few of them though (TCM marathons :D) And I probably would have liked Westside Story better had Elvis gotten the lead in that like he wanted.

Oh, and every time I see Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, I can't think of him as any one but Elvis.

You know, I haven't gotten into Elvis until recently. In fact, last saturday night I was listening to a bunch of his songs. My favorite Elvis songs are Devil in Disguise and Burning Love (partly cause of Lilo and Stitch :P) but I also like Suspicious Minds, A Little Less Conversation, Can't Help Falling in Love, and All Shook Up. I never seen any of his movies, so I can't comment on his acting but he did have a great voice.

My gosh, my dad grew up in the 50s and he just loooooves Elvis! For Christmas/birthday/father's day, I gave him Elvis #1s, 2nd to None, and the two DVD sets of concerts.

I only give him CDs/DVDs from RCA like above, none of those cheapass small companies so he'll have a first-class collection. lol

How many Elvis CD's does everyone here have? It didn't dawn on me to check before, but my roomates have quite a few - at least 12 or more

around 15 or 16 actual albums, only 3 compliations and about 5 singles, not bad for a 16 year old 8)
