I will go see Brother Bear in the theater, but it doesn't really seem to strike my interest. I read the storybook at Barnes and Noble, and it seems to be not that good...no offence to anyone who is really looking foward to it. I think that Disney is making too many "animal" movies lately and not enough "people" movies. I would really like to see another "modern princess" movie like Pocahontas or Mulan. I also think that Disney should make some of their new movies musicals again! The last one I remember that had the main characters do the singing was Pocahontas! (Maybe Mulan had singing, but I never saw that one.) Maybe this is just my opinion, but I think it is nicer to have the characters sing then just to have background music. What does everyone else think? Oh yea, back to Brother Bear, I don't know, it just seems like the whole concept of a man turning into a bear is rather odd. And the storyline seems sort of dull. Well, maybe the actual movie will be better than the storybook was, I don't know.

Mulan was the last WDF to be a musical. And I have to say I don't agree with you about Disney making to many animal films lately, what about...
Treasure Planet? Atlantis? Lilo and Stitch?

Well yea, I guess, Lilo and Stich was pretty good, and Treasure Planet was ok, but is very similar to Atlantis. I guess I just kept thinking animal-tales since Finding Nemo was getting so much praise and attention, and before that, Emperor's New groove was too...with that talking lama and all.

It is kinda funny how they are marketing Brother Bear. Based on the most recent commercials, they are really trying hard to make it look like a cross between lion king and finding nemo. i swear there were like three (!) underwater shots in the commercial.

I'm not going into this expecting a huge hit, like Finding Nemo. If you go see it hoping it will be the next best animated feature since The Lion King it will undoubtedly be disappointing. I just want it to have a solid storyline and be entertaining enough for my three year-old. If it's not, we'll be outta there in 30-45 minutes.

Y'know... it's weird that disney decided to make two human turning into animal movies spaced so little apart from eachother! I mean.... between Brother bear and The Emperors New Groove is only a three year difference!

I personally expected a little more originality then that from disney!!

Keep in mind that The Emporer's New Groove wasn't always intended as the comical human/animal transformation movie it is today. It was originally going to be a large-scale, Lion King-sque look at the Incan culture called Kingdom of the Sun. This is part of the reason I was so disappointed in the outcome - it's cute and funny but is more Cartoon Networkish than any other animated feature Disney's ever done. I'dve liked it to have a tiny bit more of seriousness to it. Besides, I wanted to see Kingdom of the Sun, New Groove is cute, but not great, and it's not anything like the trailers promised - they promised, to me, an epic scale movie with comedy thrown in, like Aladdin or Pirates of the Carribbean, not a full-on comedy.

Also, the origins of Brother Bear were originally something like The Lion King WIth Bears - bear gets sent away from family but returns later in life to recclaim his place. Sound fermilliar?

On the whole I think the superrior of the two transformation movies will be coming up next month.

of course... but i should think that by the time they had the idea worked out for brother bear they had a pretty good idea what New Groove was going to be about...!

The movie really worries me. So much about the future of Disney is riding on this film (and the next one, Home on the Range) that I'm desperate to hear good things about it. Still, it really looks like the basic formula of this movie is to take bits out of many of their most popular movies of the past.

You have the Native Amercian theme which echoes Pocahontas, the animal story (and style of animation, I think) that echoes The Lion King, the music that echoes Tarzan, the story line that seems to echo The Emperor's New Groove, and there may be a little Finding Nemo in the publicity campain like Lady suggested.

Still, I think if there is any upcoming movie that is likely to bring the luster back to traditional animation, I think Brother Bear is going to be Disney's best bet. The buzz is horrible about Home on the Range and, so far, I haven't seen anything extremely repulsive about Brother Bear that will keep me from theaters to see it. (Of course, that's not to say that I have seen anything that makes me want to run to the theaters to see it either. )

Disney better step up their advertisement campaign for this movie. It could be a hit if they could just remember how to market their movies to all audiences again. (Remember the sophisticated silhouette movie poster of the early 1990's?)

The best way to judge a film is to actually see it first gang. Let's just all chill until it is actually in theaters, then we can see it and deicde how it is then. Sheesh!

exactly!! i try not to develop an opinion on a movie until i actually go and see it. when i have a clean open mind, it makes movie watching more enjoyable, instead of thinking about all the many aspects that have already been discussed while i am watching the film. but i know, this is a discussion forum, so we must discuss away about what we think it will be like...

Then why not discuss what we have seen so far in Disney's advertising?

Talking of the advertising (and the pre-release publicity)...

I really am interested in this film, and my main interest comes from the brother hunting brother aspect of the storyline. However, none of Disney's advertising even hints at this aspect of the story.

I can accept that this plot thread sounds 'Boy-centric', and I can also expect that other, more recent boy skewed Disney animations have not performed well at the box office (Atlantis and Treasure Planet), but I still think Disney are making a mistake - see the number of posters on this forum who have shown disinterest in the film.

I do think the film will have more to it than the trailers suggest. I do think it will be popular. I do think it will be another fine addition to Disney animation. I'm just not sure how people uninterested in a 'Lion King Ripoff' will discover that the film may hold something for them after all, if Disney's advertising doesn't reflect anything apart from the animals.

i'll definitely be going to see it all in good fun, and encourage others to go as well. i don't think it is going to try to be an epic motion picture, but rather an hour of enjoyment from disney. who could ask for more?

thats very well said, we must keep in mind that the Florida department is (eh was, since they all got laid off) very talented. they're the creators of Mulan Lilo & Stitch. And a few of the people who worked on Lion King also worked on BB. I think it'll be an hour of good dinsey fun rather than a wannabe epic. We're being WAY too critical on traditional animation, and automatically praise all CG, while at the same time, everyone is sad cause of 2d dying... come on make up your minds people, just see BB with an open mind. If its god its good. if its bad its bad....simple as that

Brother Bear looks interesting because it has music by Phil Collins
and it is also the last traditional animated film before computer animation begin at every studio.
