I found something on Wikipedia about Fantasia/Fantasia 2000

Fantasia 2000 was released on its own on VHS and DVD in 2000, together with the 60th Anniversary Edition of Fantasia. A DVD box set including the two films and a bonus disc with special features, entitled The Fantasia Anthology, was also released. They have been discontinued now and a Platinum Edition DVD/BD of both films are scheduled to be released no earlier than 2008.
So both
Fantasia AND Fantasia 2000, are going to be Platinum Edition-ized? I thought that it was just going to be
Fantasia. If this is true, which I'm not sure that it is, then again I'm not sure that it isn't, then why doesn't UD have this on here? Now I have to make plans to buy both of these on Platinum Edition. Not that I don't want to rebuy these, but I already have
The Fantasia Anthology, and the
Fantasia 2000 DVD, and the sound and video are awesome. The only movie that I really want is a
UNCUT version of
Fantasia. I hope that the Platinum Edition is uncut. Anyway, what does everyone else think about the news?

Wikipedia isn't a reliable site. Anyone can edit information and post what they think is true. So it could be speculation and false hope for a PE of Fantasia/Fantasia 2000.

The Fantasia Anthology is one of the finest editions around anyway - is it given that a "PE" would be any better?
The one real improvement one could hope for, though, is the truly original version of Fantasia...

Fantasia is on the PE line, and i'm willing the bet a lot that Fantasia 2000 will come out in a special edition not too long after the original. whether or not they will both be better than the anthology is questionable, but i know i'll be buying them because i missed out on buying the anthology.

I have several different versions of "Fantasia". What is supposedly edited out? I can't tell, they all look the same for me, except for the quality of the transfer and the sound.

The Pastoral Symphony is edited in 4 instances:
1. Sunflower, a little black centaurette, is polishing the hooves of a female centaur, who's filing her nails. The edit simply zooms in to only show the female centaur filing her nails.
2. Sunflower again, is attempting to finish grooming another female centaur, who walks away. I think they cut this shot entirely in the edit.
3. As a female centaur is walking around and showing off, Sunflower is following her, holding some kind of flower train. As in the first edit, it's zoomed it (a LOT) to only show the female centaur.
4. When Bacchus is going around being drunk, he's being supported by some satyrs and Sunflower. As opposed to the Pan & Scan they originally did in the 1991 VHS, Disney digitally changed the scene to remove Sunflower.
You can check out the first three scenes over at
www.widescreen.org, in their Multimedia section.
There's more discussion about the editing in
this thread

The parts supposedly edited out should not be found on any version available in any home video format.
There are two "problems" with Fantasia:
1. Most notably, the black "centaurette" that was "zoomed out" from a few seconds in the Beethoven segment. I haven't actually checked this, but I think I read somewhere that there might be a slight difference in how this was done on the DVD version and the previous (VHS and LD) version.
2. Parts of Deems Taylor's commentary is supposedly lost - the complete original "speech" was reconstructed with a voice actor for the DVD version.

Could (did) they really make cuts (as opposed to "zooms")? Did they also cut part of the music, or was there some sort of solution to that?

Well it doesn't really have any area that can be zoomed in, so I merely assumed it was cut, as it also featured a solo shot of Sunflower. I think I read somewhere that because that one bit was cut, there was a jump in the music (or I'm likely confusing it with something else...).
I'm sure if The Lizard King comes over, he'd be able to tell us if it was cut or zoomed, since he's got a copy of the entire uncut Pastoral Symphony to reference to as opposed to seconds-long clips on the internet.
ETA:
Well, I just compared the widescreen.org clips with the DVD and the music doesn't synch up, so I think they sped up or slowed down the animation (for the second clip).

I can just say that if I were the one "forced" to do this dirty job, I would have tried really hard to avoid cuts/jumps in the music...
There's still reason to hope for the truly original version sometime in the future, obviously.

It would be really nice to see what was originally there, though i can understand how it might upset some people today. People get worked up over anything anymore, and i think that's mostly due to the fact that people can get money and free stuff out of complaining, maybe even their 15 mins of fame. It's the same as Song of the South. The day we get a release of SotS will be the day we get a complete Fantasia. so maybe..... another 100 years or so?
it's dissapointing that animated movies aren't regarded as an artform anymore. at least that's what it seems to me.

If any animated work should be considered "art", Fantasia is the one.

As for censoring Fantasia, well as its been said, nobody, not even Walt himself was perfect. So Disney GET OVER IT!
RELEASE FANTASIA IN UNCUT FORMAT!
And Release Song of the South, because if you don't you will lose further credibility!

I'd suggest that they could release the uncensored version (in the next-generation format, perhaps?) together with a print version of that magnificent "sketch-book" that we were introduced to in the Fantasia Anthology - and charge $250 or so.
Fantasia: To be cut, or not to be cut?

I swear I read on a thread in this very site that Walt Disney himself wanted the scenes featuring the stereotypical African-American centaurette edited. I think that...it would bother me to watch the Fantasia with such a negative image in it...yet, I do think people deserve to see it if they want to. But shouldn't we respect Walt's wishes? Even though Disney hasn't been doing that all along. Maybe they should release a DVD with both the uncut and cut versions of the film, so the negative stereotype doesn't affect people's viewings.

I agree, at this time in history we can now understand & tolerate the horrible acts that have occured. If people are going to possibly be offended by this, then they should turn off the TV. Look at all the movies & shows that have shown racial images & stereotypes...All in the Family, Roots, The Color Purple... the list can go on & on.
We have gone through world wars, terrorist attacks, school shootings, bombings of countless countries, mass genocides & hundreds of other terrible things, & they think that a animated black centaur & Uncle Remus will make millions of people outraged & upset?

Here are the clips that Escapay was talking about:
Clip 1:

Clip 2:

Clip 3:

I don't find any of this racially inclined. I find it more like 2 friends playing together. It's like they are dressing up to do stuff, but the white centaurette gets everything done to her because it was her turn. The black centaurette had her turn last time.

I combined the three QuickTime movies on the widescreen.org site and mvealf's Bacchus avi clip and intercollated them all into the Anthology DVD version to achieve a fairly seemless Pastoral Symphony.
Escapay wrote:Well, I just compared the widescreen.org clips with the DVD and the music doesn't synch up, so I think they sped up or slowed down the animation (for the second clip).
The widescreen.org clips were sourced from a PAL tape, but they are slightly messed up with the timing as you've described above. I started from scratch and did a frame-by-frame synchronization of the clips with the DD 5.0 music from the Anthology DVD in order to get it to look right.
