Prince Phillip's view on the TLK MOVIE

I just specified movie caus I might do a review of the dvd, don't know if I'll do an "oficial" one, but it will express my views, in an unbiased manor...

Well I just saw the "Special Edition" version of The Lion King with the Home Theatre Remix...

It's was great!!! IMHO The Lion King really doesn't appeal to me as much as others, but it definately is a great movie... :)

Now, the first thing I would like to comment on, is the changed animation...
I think it is GREAT! Personally I think the movie benefitted from it, now before you get all offended just keep reading I'll adress "disney's lie" later. I think the crocodiles looked aweful before and now they look great, they really fit in with the song, not sur if more animation was changed from "Can't Wait to be King" but it was certainly a welcomed change for this viewer, I thought it was absolutely awesome to look at. It was a nice break from the rest of the film, and the colors and zig zags, and all were vewry cool to look at! I don't think I would have noticed ant other changes if I wasn't a member of this board, but I though the water fall was very nice, and hey it made for a nicer presentation...
Now I know you all are miffed, that Disney promissed the "Original Theatrical Cut" and did not deliver, and that upsets you and that is understandable, but if you think about it, Walt himself edited some of his works years after they hit the big screen, for example "Three Little Pigs" and "Fantasia", but they were his, and so it technically isn't considered tampering, or atleast they can still sell the stuff labeled as unedired, well that's exactly what happened with the Lion King, they saw a few things, they thought needed to be fixed and they did so, but since it is technically their film, it isn't considered wrong, as it would be with a classic such as Snow White or Sleeping Beauty... So be mad that you were "lied to" but as for the new I-Max version, just enjoy, it really is'nt that horrible, it is not as if the changed the actions of a scene, for example there was talk of Editing the swimming to the surface scene of the Little Mermaid where she has just been given legs and is nude, now that would be wrong... IMO...

As for Mourning Report, I actually, to my surprise, liked it. I mean I don't say it was phenominal, but that will be the version I watch from now on, and I think it was inserted in seemlessly, the animation was not even a bit off, and I think the voices were matched up perfectly, I think the kid singing for Simba did a great job. :) I think the song was fun, it worked perfectly, and it adds something new to the film...

Now, as for the Sound and Audio, I found absolutely no quams, it was beautiful to look at, better than ever, and the sound was absolutely amazing! :) Although, I don't think anyone's had a problem with that so far

Just a few things I noticed watching the movie at this point in my life...
-The first was the Simba really was a spoiled brat! I think that Mufasa's death and everything that happened afterwards was essential for Simba to become the King he eventually did...
-Also in past viewing I always found Timon and Pumba to be embarrassing when Nala comes, and thought "poor Simba", but this time I could see them as just looking out for his back, and caould see why he would want them standing by his side, as he claimed his thrown, and his rightful place, in the circle of life! :)

Anyway, I have nothing negetive to say in the way of the movie, or it's presentation...

To mirror the thoughts of many others on the forum, just because something CAN look better, doesn't necessarily mean we should do it.
I mean, would you approve of going back and altering Citizen Kane because some of Welles' innovative techniques aren't so innovative now?

Films are an historical document and should be left as such.

Glad you enjoyed it for the most part though :D

No, not if people today did it. I kinda adressed this later in the thing...

Lucas, is redoing the original Star Wars trilogy, cause he is/was not happy, with how they were, I mean they were good for the time, but they did not show what he had envissioned. So he's going back with todays technology and changing it to meet that original vision. It is his movie, I think he has the right to make it as he originally would have, had the technology existed, and maybe there were a few things he put in the movie, that he just did not like and wanted to change... so I think he has the right to change those things, now I think that the originals should also be available for historical value, but if Lucas decides, the new SE's are how he wants his movie to be seen from now on, there's nothing we can do about it.

Disney also did this with some of his cartoons, and as a result, we get the edited version of Three Little Pigs, on a treasure set that promotes, unedited cartoons. But cause Walt himself changed them, it isn't considered editing them.

Well the very same is true for The Lion King, the people who made the movie went back and changed those things, cause they thought it would make their movie better, who are we to say that they can't do that?

It is not the same as changing Steamboat Willie or Citizen Cane, cause the people today have no right to change those, as they are protected by Historical rights or whatever. The directors/creators of the movies are not alive today to make those changes, and they are so old, I don't think they would want to by this point.

Anyway, that's just how I view this particular subject, but I do think it would have been nice to include the original, however, I don't think disney would want to pay for 2 restorations, making the I-Max "restoration, and then restoring the original, it would just take up too much money...

The theatrical cut on the DVD is just an edited IMAX edition without the super-sized title card, and the dedication at the opening.
