What is everyone's favorite underappreciated animated Disney Film? "Underappreciated" does NOT include members of the 14 film Platinum line-up or pixar collaborations. Pick both a pre-Disney Renaissance film (before Little Mermaid) and post-Disney Renaissance film.

my favorite older underappreciated film: Aristocats! I like the kittens, the jazz tunes and "Carmen" is one of my favorite songs.

my favorite modern underappreciated film: Pocahontas! I like the romantic story, the interesting score and Pocahontas' long beautiful hair.

just realized something. i guess i was trying to say "unappreciated" not "underappreciated" (which isn't a word).

The Rescuers is my favorite "underappreciated", unappreciated, or underrated fil of all times.

Really? I use that word quite often I'm positive it exists!

As for the question...

Pre-reneissance film has to be The Fox and the Hound. I'm not a die-hard fan of it but so many people don't even know it exists. It has a great animation (maybe not up to par with that of The Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast but certainly better than The Aristocats and The Rescuers'), lovely characters and decent songs.

Post-reneissance - The Hunchback Of Notre-Dame. I would have chosen Pocahontas had I not watched Hunchback last week and fallen in love with it all over again... For starters, the animation is mostly STUNNING, except for the scene where Quasi takes Esmeralda to the roof (was it a roof or what?). I hate the purple colors there.
The songs are a few notches below those of its predecessors but when watching the movie, they fit very well with the plot and the whole dark feeling of it.
The characters are brilliant too. Esmeralda is a welcome change from Disney's usual heroines (i.e. Ariel and Belle) and Frollo is an unordinary villain IMO, especially when put next to Pocahontas' Retcliff.

Probably Oliver & Company. The story is good, the music is catchy and it makes for a nice Disney movie. Granted, it doesn't match the excellence of films like Beauty and the Beast, but its still one of my favorites. Nostalgia probably has something to do with it though, considering I was really into that movie when I was little.

I get the impression that you're just talking about the so-called "Animated Classics". Shame, as my response was going to be The Country Bears.

But if we're talking about the "classics" then Treasure Planet. Simply because it was written off as a failure by Walt Disney management 3 days after it opened. You can't get more unappreciated than that can you? And of course once it was labeled as a failure, other media sources were quick to pick up on the news, thus convincing everyone the film was a failure before anyone had time to actually see it and make their own minds up.

I got to agree with ya on that one! It was a good movie introduced into an extremely crowded box office! Plus, as you say, their on condemnation of the film didn't help matters much. (Although I still went to see it, it was on the IMAX screen which was exremely cool!)

I have to see this Country Bears movie, you seem to really love that movie!! Now I have to see it for myself.

Wow...I agree 100% with what you said. I love Pocahontas, and The Aristocats is soo cute! I can't wait for the Special edition of Pocahontas next January!

my favorite unappreciatived movie would have to be The Great Mouse Detective. I mean it was the first animated film to have CGI in the background during the Big Bend scene and Vincent Price did a great job as the voice of Ratigan in the movie.

My favorite underappreciated disney film is the rescuers! I just love that movie and it's even on my top ten fav disney films list. I'd say its about 8 i between hercules (7) and mulan (9)...

I don't think that "Pocahontas" is really unappreciated... its only problem is that it was released right before "The Lion King". Well, still, it's not as appreciated as it should be, so, I choose "Pocahontas"... it's a great film, and certainly is part of the Golden Age.

The pre-Walt film should be "The Three Caballeros"... I know, it's not a perfect film, but it's a shame that Disney sometimes pretends it even doesn't exist. It's a fun movie, filled with wonderful surreal sequences and a lot of great songs (Os Quindins de Iaiá, Iaiá... ). I hope we will se the special edition DVD some day!

What? No, Pocahontas was relased after TLK, wasn't i?

I thought the Lion King came out in 1994 and Pocahontas in 1995 or something like that...

Oliver and Ichabod are two great films that people seem to underrate and never see, respectively.

I'd have to The Great Mouse Dectective(hard to find on DVD) and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame.

I love The Three Caballeros too! Its such a fun and wacky movie. Just a side note, if you go to Walt Disney World and stay at the All Star Music resort, you will see a fun 3 Caballeros thing. The pool is shaped like a giant guitar and in the middle of the pool is a large, round float with the Three Caballeros on it and water shoots out of their guns. I *may* have gotten a photo of it...

My vote is for THE BLACK CAULDRON. A film that came out a few years too early so it was dismissed as just a kid's flick of the mid 80's , instead of a 90's post Beauty animated film where an adult would walk in to a theatre without a child in tow. Also you gotta love GURGI who was Golum 20 years before Golum was.
